The “Machida Era” was extended in controversial fashion on Saturday, as light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida was awarded a questionable unanimous decision win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event of UFC 104 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

In a decision that was met with boos from the live crowd and claims of robbery and calls for an immediate rematch from online fans, the judges awarded Machida the victory with 48-47 scores despite Rua winning the bout on nearly every observer’s scorecard.

Rua’s strategy relied on damaging leg and body kicks that left Machida battered after the five-round technical showdown, while Machida connected less frequently with precision strikes. Despite more frequent and damaging blows, the decision was given to the reigning champ, who was defending the title for the first time since winning the belt from Rashad Evans in May.

Machida remains undefeated, improving to 16-0 in the victory with his eight-straight wins inside the Octagon tied for second-best in the promotion’s history, while Rua falls to 18-4 in defeat.

In the UFC 104 co-headliner, Cain Velasquez cemented his status as a top heavyweight contender with a dominating win over Ben Rothwell. After blitzing the IFL veteran for the entirety of the opening round, Velasquez picked up where he left off in the second, taking Rothwell to the ground and quickly finishing him with punches.

Velasquez, now 8-0 on his career with five-straight UFC wins, remains in line for a future title show, while Rothwell falls to 30-7 and will return to the Octagon in search of his first UFC win to get him back on track.

In other main card action, Gleison Tibau used dominant takedowns to pick up a decision over Josh Neer, Joe Stevenson forced Spencer Fisher to tap to a barrage of elbows, and Antony Johnson earned a 41-second knockout of Yoshiyuki Yoshida.

On the preliminary card, The Ultimate Fighter 8 winner Ryan Bader earned a unanimous decision over Eric Schafer, Pat Barry kicked off the Spike TV card with an impressive second-round TKO of Antoni Hardonk, Chael Sonnen dominated Yushin Okami en route to a unanimous decision win, and Jorge Rivera, Kyle Kingsbury, and Stefan Struve also earned wins.

The official results for UFC 104 were:

Lyoto Machida (c) def. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47)
UFC Light Heavyweight Championship

Cain Velasquez def. Ben Rothwell via TKO (strikes) — Round 2, 0:58

Gleison Tibau def. Josh Neer via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Joe Stevenson def. Spencer Fisher via submission (strikes) — Round 2, 4:03

Anthony Johnson def. Yoshiyuki Yoshida via TKO (strikes) — Round 1, 0:41

Ryan Bader def. Eric Schafer via unanimous decison (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Patrick Barry def. Antoni Hardonk via TKO (strikes) — Round 2, 2:30

Chael Sonnen def. Yushin Okami via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Jorge Rivera def. Rob Kimmons via TKO (strikes) — Round 3, 1:53

Kyle Kingsbury def. Razak Al-Hassan via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

Stefan Struve def. Chase Gormley via submission (triangle choke) — Round 1, 4:04

Another interesting match-up is in the works to be added to the already stacked UFC 104 card for October. Welterweights Anthony Johson and Yoshiyuki Yoshida will each look to move closer to the top of their division.

Another interesting match-up is in the works to be added to the already stacked UFC 104 card for October. Welterweights Anthony Johnson and Yoshiyuki Yoshida will each look to move closer to the top of their division. The fighters have verbally agreed to the contest, but the actual fight contracts are in the process of being finalized, according to MMAJunkie.

Johnson is coming off of back to back knockout victories over Kevin Burns and Luigi Fioravanti, respectively, bouncing back from a controversial loss to Burns in their first meeting. He had been expected to take on “The Ultimate Fighter” alum Matt Brown at the finale for season 9 of “The Ultimate Fighter”, but was forced to withdraw by a knee injury suffered in training. Brown later backed out of the card citing nagging injuries of his own.

Yoshida garnered a submission victory over Brandon Wolff in his last outing at UFC 98, marking a rebound from a vicious knockout loss to Josh Koscheck in December. The skilled Judoka will bring an 11-3 record to the Octagon that evening which he will no doubt hope to extend.

Johnson recently made headlines for the wrong reasons as he was arrested for alleged domestic violence, allegations of which his managers maintain he is completely innocent.

Lyoto Machida became the new UFC light heavyweight champion on Saturday in Las Vegas, taking out title-holder Rashad Evans with a flurry of punches in the second round of their UFC 98 headliner to capture the 205-pound belt.

Evans offered little offense in the bout, while Machida controlled the fight throughout, using his famous (or perhaps infamous) unorthodox style to score a knockdown late in the first round before eventually connecting with a barrage of punches midway through the second that first staggered Evans before ultimately collapsing him cold to the canvas.

Evans falls to 18-1-1 with the first loss of his career, while Machida remains undefeated, upping his perfect record to 15-0.

In the UFC 98 co-main event Matt Hughes picked up a controversial unanimous decision victory over Matt Serra in the highly-anticipated bout between the welterweight rivals.

Hughes survived an early onslaught by Serra in the opening frame to take both the second and third rounds en route to the decision victory. Despite the judge’s views on the bout, most spectators scored the third frame in favor of Serra following a surprising takedown and outburst of offense in the closing minute. Even Hughes was apparently swayed in favor of Serra, raising his opponent’s arm following the conclusion of the contest. However, when the only scores that matter were handed down the judges awarded the close, albeit controversial decision to Hughes with 29-28 scores across the board.

The future hall of famer Hughes improves to 43-7 on his career after bouncing back from back-to-back defeats, while Serra goes to 9-6 following two-straight losses.

Drew McFedries rebounded from back-to-back losses with a 37-second knockout of Xaview Foupa-Pokam that could send “Professor X” packing from the UFC, while Chael Connen topped Dan Miller and Frankie Edgar scored a unanimous decision over Sean Sherk in other main card bouts.

Brock Larson, Tim Hague, Kyle Bradley, Krzysztof Soszynski, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, and George Roop were victorious on the evening’s preliminary card.

The official results for UFC 98 were:

Lyoto Machida def. Rashad Evans (c) via KO (punches) — Round 2, 3:57
UFC Light Heavyweight Championship

Matt Hughes def. Matt Serra via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
