From Speer:

“They’re pumped to have me back because they never wanted to lose me in the first place. We haven’t talked about the money or length of contract yet, but I’ll definitely be in the WEC. They’re planning to get me on their next big event after their June event, probably in August.

I didn’t agree with it right away; it was depressing news. But now I know I lost to a great fighter, and he surprised me and everyone by how well he fought. I don’t think it’s too bad of a thing for me to be going to the WEC. There are great fighters there, too. I need to keep learning and working on my game, and the WEC is a great place to do that.

I can’t complain about what’s happened, because have I put in as much time and effort as other people who have gotten to the UFC? No, I haven’t. But I’m going to keep working on it as much as I can.”

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) is owned by the same parent company as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Speer was to fight outside the promotion before returning to the WEC but those plans were scrapped when he was forced to stop training after suffering a spider bite on his calf while working on his family’s farm.

He will train with former UFC champion Matt Hughes at his H.I.T. Squad gym to prepare for the August bout.

Din Thomas, a veteran of The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback, has put up back-to-back losses against Kenny Florian and Josh Neer, and will now look to fight elsewhere at 145lbs as planned. Thomas had recently expressed interest in fighting at featherweight in the WEC, but his wishes have not been granted, as he has reportedly been let go by Zuffa completely.

Tommy Speer gets the axe following his highlight reel knockout loss to Anthony Johnson at UFC Fight Night 13. Prior to that, Speer was the runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter 6, losing to now-lightweight, Mac Danzig, at the finale of the show.

Kuniyoshi Hironaka has only had one win since competing in the UFC, which was over Forrest Petz last year at UFC Fight Night 9. Hironaka’s first fight inside the octagon was a decision loss to Jon Fitch, and his last two performances both resulted in TKO’s losses, at the hands of Thiago Alves and most recently Jonathan Goulet.

Additional fighters confirmed to have been released from their UFC contracts include Travis Lutter, Jake O’Brien, Kalib Starnes, Joe Doerksen, David Heath, Charles McCarthy, and John Halverson as well as many recent “Ultimate Fighter” cast members.

Tommy Speer, the runner-up on the recently completed sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter, will face Anthony Johnson at UFC Fight Night 13 in April according to MMA Junkie.

Speer (9-2 UFC, 0-1 UFC) is coming off a first-round submission loss to Mac Danzig on the live finale of The Ultimate Fighter 6. During the series Speer defeated Jon Koppenhaver, Ben Saunders, and George Sotiropolous in route to his finale matchup with Danzig. Prior to the finale-loss Speer had won 5 straight fights including a KO win in the WEC over Sidney Silva.

Johnson (4-1 UFC, 1-1 UFC) entered the UFC with just a 3-0 record but immediately made a splash inside the octagon. After accepting a fight on the UFC Fight Night 10 card less than a week before the event, Johnson knocked out his opponent, Chad Reiner, in just 13 seconds. His success was short-lived as he was defeated by Rich Clementi at UFC 76 in September.

UFC Fight Night 13 will be held April 2nd in Colorado. In co-main event bouts lightweights Kenny Florian and Joe Lauzon will go head-to-head and Matt Hamill and Stephan Bonnar will clash at 205 pounds. Spencer Fisher versus Marcus Aurelio will also appear on the fight card.
