In a busy newsweek for fight bookings and moves, it would be easy to let some notable fighters in action on lesser North American events slip through the cracks, but I’m not going to let that happen for at least two events.

The Western Canada based Maximum Fighting Championship recently sent out a press release confirming its matches for the upcoming MFC 22: Payoff event on October 2nd just outside Edmonton, Alberta. The event will be televised live on HDNet Fights. Included on the card are several UFC castoffs, as well as a batch of MFC staples. The headlining bout will be match up between two top grapplers, as Jason MacDonald will look to topple Travis Lutter. Also on the card, Antonio McKee will take on Carlo Prater for the MFC lightweight belt, and Luigi Fioravanti will face John Alessio.

The full card for MFC 22 is:

Jason MacDonald vs. Travis Lutter

Antonio McKee vs. Carlo Prater
MFC Lightweight Title Bout

Luigi Fioravanti vs John Alessio

Ryan Jimmo vs Marvin Eastman

David Heath vs Mike Nickels

Pete Spratt vs Nathan Gunn

Thiago Goncalves vs Jesse Juarez

The Spokane, Washington based Arena Rumble will hold its debut event this Saturday, September 12th at the Spokane arena. To kick things off they have enlisted the services of a few TUF alums, and a few recent UFC castoffs, as well as some up and coming fighters. Headlining the event is a match up between Jason Guida (known for not making weight on “The Ultimate Fighter 8″) and Jeremy Horn, a veteran of over one hundred fights. Other notables in action on the card include former UFC fighters Trevor Prangley, Brad Imes, and Terry Martin, as well as undefeated Strikeforce prospect Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm, who has yet to have a fight go the distance.

The event is slated to feature 15 professional bouts, with no broadcast plans, according to MMAJunkie. The main card for Arena Rumble is:

Jason Guida vs. Jeremy Horn

Trevor Prangley vs. Dennis Reed

Lyle Beerbohm vs. Josh Martin

Brad Imes vs. Josh Queen

Mike Hanks vs. Sidney Silva

Justin Grizzard vs. Ben McCombs

Terry Martin vs. Julio Paulino

Middleweight Frank Trigg sealed his main event win over Danny Babcock with a late third-round knockdown, earning a unanimous decision victory in the headlining bout of XCF: Rumble in Racetown, which took place on Saturday in Daytona, Florida.

Despite emerging victorious, Trigg, who has now won four-straight bouts and eight of his last ten, said he will return to the 170-pound welterweight division before the end of the year.

In the evening’s co-main event, UFC veteran Terry Martin fell to 2-5 in his last seven fights as he was upset by Zak Cummings via split decision. Martin too is expected to cut down to the welterweight class in the near future.

The event was to air via online pay-per-view with a portion of the proceeds benefiting UFC injured fighter Corey Hill. However, for unknown reasons, a low quality stream of the event was broadcast for free and a pay-per-view wasn’t available.

The event’s complete results were:

Frank Trigg def. Danny Babcock via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

Zak Cummings def. Terry Martin via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Jesse Taylor def. Gert Kocani via submission (rear naked choke) — Round 2, 4:45

Marcus Jones def. John Juarez via TKO (strikes) — Round 1, 1:39

T.J. Cook def. Scott Harper via KO (punch) — Round 1, 1:37

Todd Cutler def. Jeremy May via TKO (strikes) — Round 1, 4:07

Gilbert Burgos def. Chris Thorne via TKO (doctor’s stoppage) — Round 1, 1:17

Ryan Keenan def. Blake Bowman via TKO (strikes) — Round 1, 4:29

Duane Ludwig vs. Yves Edwards, Bobby Southworth vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Kim Couture vs. Lina Kvokov, and Joe Riggs vs. Luke Stewart are also slated to be featured on the HDNet-broadcast main card.

“This is one of the those matchups where there’s no chance it won’t be a great fight,” said Smith. “A fight like Terry Martin – ever since I’ve watched him fight, I always thought he’d be an exciting fight for me. I like taking on guys that bring it and like to fight. My teammates said you got to stick in there and be ready to fight at any time and that’s what I did. I think fighting two weeks later is better for me and is perfect timing. He’s a better boxer and I’m a better kickboxer. I want to keep the fight standing. I know he likes to stand and bang so it’s looking to be a slugfest.”

“Cory Devela was a tough guy and he fought a good fight. I just wanted to show people that I’ve got knockout power in both my hands,” said Martin. “I’m looking to come out and bang in this fight, too. Fighting has always been a part of me. I come from a fightin’ family. You have to be aggressive to make it in MMA. I’m aggressive and agile and I think I have a very entertaining style.”

Tickets for the event, priced from $30, are available at Ticketmaster.com and Strikeforce.com.

The California-based MMA promotion officially announced the bout yesterday.

Devela has won seven straight contests including a victory over UFC veteran Joe Riggs. His lone losses came at the hands of IFL veteran Matt Horwich and UFC veteran Ed Herman.

“I know he’s a short little brick house and a good wrestler, but I’ll have a lot or reach on him and I don’t think anybody’s wrestling compares to mine,” said Devela in the announcement. “People underestimate my wrestling. Joe Riggs did and got thrown because of that. I’m going to do the same thing to Terry if he wants to wrestle with me.”

After back-to-back UFC victories over Jorge Rivera and Ivan Salaverry, Martin has dropped three of his last four bouts to Chris Leben, Marvin Eastman, and Vitor Belfort while posting his lone victory over Daiju Takase. Martin was last in action on July 19th, losing to Belfort via second-round knockout at Affliction “Banned”.

“When I was in the hospital recovering [from five gunshot wounds], I was around people who were shot in the same places as me, but who couldn’t walk or who lost their limbs as a result of what happened,” side Martin. “Some of them even passed away. That really made me think twice and start hanging out in a different environment. Fighting has always been a part of me. I come from a fightin’ family. You have to be aggressive to make it in MMA. I’m aggressive and agile and I think I have a very entertaining style.”

“Strikeforce at the Mansion 2″ also features Kazuo Misaki vs. Joe Riggs, Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral, and Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson vs. an opponent to-be-announced.

The ten-bout event took place on Saturday, July 19th, in front of a sold out crowd of 13,988 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Sylvia came out punching at the opening of the bout but just seconds in Emelianenko floored Sylvia with several quick-but-powerful punch combinations. On the ground Fedor continued the barrage, pounding on Sylvia before sinking in hooks and securing a rear naked choke that forced Sylvia to tap out just 36 seconds into the championship contest.

Emelianenko, long-regarded as the best heavyweight but doubted over the strength of his opponents, was crowned the first-ever WAMMA heavyweight champion following the first-round submission victory while Sylvia looks to regroup after dropping his second straight bout and third of his past four.

“You never know how short or long the fight will be, but I just wanted to end it as quickly as possible. I just wanted to show the fans my skills,” said Fedor following the victory. “I would be very honored to fight Randy Couture.”

“I was amazed at how good he is. The guy’s a stud. I don’t think he’s human. He’s incredible. I don’t think anybody’s going to beat him for a while,” remarked Sylvia following the defeat.

Former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski displayed superior striking in his matchup with IFL standout Ben Rothwell, stopping his opponent with a right-uppercut combination early in the third round to earn the knockout victory.

“I think they got their money’s worth tonight. I did a lot of work on my boxing,” said Arlovski following the knockout win. “I want to fight Fedor, Josh or anybody Affliction chooses.”

Following a slow first round between Josh Barnett and Pedro Rizzo the pace picked up in the second as both fighters were content to trade. Barnett connected with a vicious left hook that dropped Rizzo to the canvas and finished him off with several more shots on the ground before Referee Herb Dean halted the bout at 1:44 of the second.

After a paced opening frame featherweight Mark Hominick submitted Savant Young via armbar at 4:25 of the second.

Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Renato “Babalu” Sobral was victorious in his return, defeating Mike Whitehead via unanimous decision by utilizing crisp and accurate striking.

Matt Lindland overwhelmed Fabio Negao to earn a unanimous decision victory with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 30-26.

“He was so damn tough. He was the real deal,” said Lindland of his opponent following the bout.

As expected, heavy favorite Antonio Rogerio Nogueira stopped Edwin Dewees with a combination at 4:06 of the opening round.

Vitor Belfort stopped Terry Martin in the second round of their middleweight contest with a flying knee followed by an uppercut-left combination that collapsed Martin into the ropes.

Paul Buentello was unable to finish off late replacement Gary Goodridge but did enough to earn a unanimous decision victory.

Mike Pyle defeated JJ Ambrose with a rear naked choke at 2:51 of the opening round.

A scheduled bout between Ray Lamaza and Justin Levens was canceled due to time constraints but both fighters were paid their base salary as well as a bonus.
