“Leaving Bismarck, ND right now,” wrote UFC President Dana White on Twitter. “Brock had minor surgery and is feeling better. Not 100% sure he is out of the woods, but feeling better.”

In his latest video blog, White says Lesnar has been released from the hospital and has returned home to recover for several days before undergoing a complete medical checkup in the coming days.

Lesnar, who was also suffering from mono, was scheduled to defend his title against Shane Carwin this Saturday at UFC 106, but the matchup was pushed back to January only to again be postponed as Lesnar remained sidelined.

With Lesnar out indefinitely, White told the LA Times on Tuesday that the UFC will schedule an interim heavyweight title fight, with Carwin and fellow contender Cain Velasquez expected to square off early next year.

According to White, Lesnar, who is also suffering from mono, has been hospitalized since collapsing during a trip to Canada last week. He will reportedly be transferred to the Mayo Clinic, where he’d undergo surgery for a “intestinal disorder”.

While the TMZ report is in line with earlier rumors that the illness could be career threatening, MMA Weekly, citing a source from Lesnar’s camp, reported yesterday that the illness was “nothing life threatening” and was simply complications that could be treated with antibiotics.

Lesnar had been scheduled to fight Shane Carwin this Saturday at UFC 106, but withdrew from the bout late last month before being targeted for a January return that again fell through.

If Lesnar does require surgery and remains out for the foreseeable future, an interim heavyweight title matchup between Carwin and Cain Velasquez is likely to take place in February or March.

At Saturday’s post-UFC 105 press conference, UFC President Dana White issued an update on Lesnar while also announcing Nogueira’s withdrawal from the January 2 card.

According to White, Lesnar, who is currently hospitalized in North Dakota after collapsing during a trip to Canada, is in “bad shape” as a result of mononucleosis and a second undisclosed illness and is “not getting well anytime soon.”

Nougiera, meanwhile, is likely to be hospitalized in the coming days to recover from a severe staph infection that has entered his blood and forced him out of the January fight.

While Carwin would have been a logical replacement to fight Velasquez at UFC 108, the heavyweight challenger will be out of action until February while rehabbing a knee injury.

“My manager Jason Genet just told me that UFC 108 is not happening,” wrote Carwin. “Brock has Mono and what the UFC has told me is that I have earned the title shoot(sic) but I have to wait for the title holder. I hope Brock gets well soon.”

The Lesnar-Carwin matchup was likely the UFC’s last hope to have a championship headliner for the traditional blockbuster event, as lightweight title-holder BJ Penn fights just two weeks earlier at UFC 107, while Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva, and Georges St-Pierre are all sidelined while recovering from injuries.

UFC 108 currently features Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva.

Lesnar was to take on Carwin later this month in the main event of UFC 106, but was forced to postpone the matchup due to an extended illness, believed to be mononucleosis, that has prevented him from training for over a month.

The fight was then targeted for UFC 108, but with Lesnar still battling the illness and unable to train for the bout it will again be postponed, likely to UFC 109 on February 6.

UFC 108, which takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, features Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva. The pay-per-view event is also expected to includes Junior dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga and Carlos Condit vs. Paul Daley.

“I’m not sure exactly what it is he has, mono or whatever, but I know that he was sick and couldn’t get a good, hard workout in,”  Greg Nelson of Minnesota Martial Arts Academy told Yahoo Sports. “There’s a big difference between making an appearance and smiling and waving at a football game and going out and doing what he has to do in his training.”

According to the report, Lesnar-Carwin remains targeted for UFC 108 on January 2 in Las Vegas, but could be postponed until February is Lesnar is unable to resume training soon. If the fight is again pushed back, UFC 108, one of the UFC’s traditional blockbuster events, is likely to be left without a championship main event, as lightweight title-holder BJ Penn fights less than one month earlier at UFC 107 while Lesnar, light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, middleweight champ Anderson Silva, and welterweight title-holder Georges St-Pierre are all expected to be unavailable.

According to a post by Carwin on Twitter, the fight has been rescheduled for UFC 108 on January 2 in Las Vegas, leaving Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin to headline UFC 106.

Lesnar has reportedly been suffering from flu-like symptoms for three-and-a-half weeks, with White saying Lesnar has “never been this sick in his life” and “hasn’t been able to shake it” but that he is not believed to have H1N1 (swine flu).

Lesnar (4-1), the UFC’s current heavyweight champion, won the title with a victory over Randy Couture last November, then defended the belt against Frank Mir at UFC 100 in July. Carwin (11-0) earned his title shot with three-straight wins inside the Octagon, including a 69-second knockout of Gabriel Gonzaga in March.

Headlining UFC 106 will be a heavyweight title bout between two behemoths, champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Shane Carwin. Also featured on the card is the return of Tito Ortiz who will be facing off against Mark Coleman.

Baroni, like Ortiz, will be returning to the Octagon after taking some time away. He has a 13-11 record, including going 3-5 in his previous Octagon bouts. Baroni’s services were reacquired by the UFC after the New York native was released by Strikeforce.

Sadollah was the winner of season seven of The Ultimate Fighter at middleweight. After winning the show, his first non TUF bout in the UFC was twice delayed by injury before he dropped down to welterweight, losing to Johny Hendricks. Sadollah will be looking to get back in the win column and improve his professional record to 2-1.

Davis was last in action in June at UFC 99 in Germany, suffering a unanimous decision loss to Dan Hardy. Prior to the loss, Davis had put together back-to-back wins over Paul Kelly and Chris Lytle, after losing to Saunders’ last opponent, Mike Swick, at UFC 85. The Las Vegas event will mark Davis’ first fight on American soil since his April 2007 victory over Pete Spratt in Houston.

Saunders was also last in action at UFC 99 against Swick, suffering a second-round TKO that ended a three fight win streak he had been on since his time on The Ultimate Fighter. As a contestant on season six of The Ultimate Fighter he lost a decision to eventual finalist Tommy Speer.

Dent was a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 9 where he lost in the semifinals to eventual winner Ross Pearson. In his last outing he won “Submission of the Night” honors at the TUF 9 Finale in June for his first-round submission of Cameron Dollar, his fourth-straight victory, improving his record to 19-9.

Sotiropoulos was eliminated from The Ultimate Fighter 6 after losing in the semi finals to Tommy Speer, but has rebounded to win three-straight in the UFC over Billy Miles, Roman Mitichyan, and, most-recently in August, George Roop. Sotiropoulos’ win over Roop marked the Australian’s lightweight debut and improved his record to 10-2.
