Tickets for the card, priced from $30, go on sale to the general public at 10am PT this Friday, November 13, through Ticketmaster.com.

Le (6-0) vacated the middleweight title in September after landing another movie role that would extend his 18-months of inactivity. Le, a decorated kickboxer, has fought exclusively for Strikeforce since transitioning to MMA in 2006, winning five-straight before earning  the title with a third-round TKO of Frank Shamrock last year.

Smith (16-6), who went 1-3 in the UFC between 2006 and 2007, twice fought EliteXC middleweight champ Robbie Lawler in 2008, fighting to a no contest in their first bout before suffering a second-round TKO in their second meeting. Smith rebounded with back-to-back wins in Strikeforce over Terry Martin and Benji Radach, but was submitted by Nick Diaz in June in his most-recent fight.

Strikeforce: Evolution features Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Matt Lindland and the debut of Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, and is also rumored to include the lightweight championship unification between title-holders Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez.

Strikeforce’s December 19th is beginning to shape up, fighters already rumored for the event include Robbie Lawler, and Scott Smith. Now joining them is a proposed middleweight match up between Matt Lindland and Ronald “Jacare” Souza, and the promotional debut of Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal against an as yet unknown opponent. Smith (16-6) will return to action at a yet-unannounced December Strikeforce event and has his sights set on fighting former champ Frank Shamrock or Benji Radach.

A former WEC light heavyweight champion, Smith dropped his UFC debut in 2006 to David Terrell then appeared as a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 4, losing in the opening round to Travis Lutter. “Hands of Steel” rebounded at the TUF 4 Finale, scoring a second-round knockout of Pete Sell, but would leave the UFC following losses to Patrick Cote and Ed Herman. Smith re-surfaced in EliteXC, fighting champ Robbie Lawler to a no contest in their first meeting before suffering a second-round TKO in a rematch.

After the collapse of EliteXC, Smith debuted in Strikeforce with back-to-back wins over Terry Martin and Benji Radach before being submitted by Nick Diaz in his most-recent bout in June.

Strikeforce has yet to formally announce its December card, which will air live on Showtime, but the promotion has reportedly reserved December 5 and December 12 as potential dates for an event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. If Strikeforce follows through with either date it will put itself in direct competition with a major UFC event: The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, featuring Kimbo Slice, on the 5th or UFC 107, headlined by BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez, on the 12th.

8,867 fans attended the Showtime-televised event at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Following the win, which improved Shields’ record to 23-4-1, the former EliteXC welterweight champion called for a middleweight title bout against Strikeforce champ Cung Le. Le, however, is not expected to defend his title for the indefinite future while pursuing a movie career and Shields may be forced to face another opponent for an interim title before Le returns. Lawler, a former EliteXC middleweight champion, falls to 18-5 following the defeat.

Heavyweight contender Brett Rogers needed just 22-seconds to knockout Andrei Arlovski with a flurry of punches in the Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields co-headliner. Rogers, who improved to 10-0 with the win, will next meet Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem on a future Strikeforce card, while Arlovski’s future is less certain after falling to 15-7 with his second-straight knockout loss.

In other main card action, Nick Diaz overwhelmed Scott Smith with punches over two full rounds before forcing Smith to tap to a rear naked choke in the third and Joe Riggs and Mike Whitehead picked up unanimous decision victories over Phil Baroni and Kevin Randleman respectively.

“I think this is a great fight for me, but I really hate that (Smith) brings his kids to every one of his fights because now I’m going to be made out to be the bad guy or some sort of villain after I beat him up,” said the 25-year-old Diaz, who shocked the MMA world with his complete dominance of four-time world champion Frank Shamrock in the Strikeforce main event on SHOWTIME from HP Pavilion in San Jose on Saturday, April 11. “At the end of the day, I’m going to do what I have to do though and take him out.”

Against Shamrock, Diaz demonstrated his versatility. The Gracie Jiu Jitsu black belt spent the majority of the match trading strikes—and getting the better of the exchanges. Known for his prowess on the mat, Diaz is also a professional boxer.

Known for his outstanding endurance, Diaz just completed a 5K race and will compete in an upcoming triathlon near his hometown in Stockton, Calif., in order to prepare for what could be a marathon slugfest in the cage with Smith.

Earlier on the “Shamrock vs. Diaz” fight card, the 29-year-old Smith prevailed in a brutal and action-packed fight that surely will be candidate for 2009 Fight of the Year. The thrilling, seesaw battle with middleweight Benji “The Razor” Radach ended when Smith landed one monstrous punch in the middle of the third round.

“I’m pretty much 100 percent right now, other than some stitches I have that are tender,” said Smith, who returned to training on Monday, April 13, two days after his victory.

“I usually take a few weeks off, get out of shape and go up to about 210 pounds and wind up spending a few weeks just getting back in shape,” he said, “but I decided I wasn’t going to do that this time. I’m 195 pounds right now and I feel great.”

With 15 of his 17 wins having come by way of knockout, Smith, a Muay Thai specialist, has lived up to his nickname. To prepare adequately for Diaz’s grappling capabilities, Smith will work with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Ricardo Barros.

“Diaz is a great fighter,” acknowledged Smith. “He’s going to come in there and out grapple me and out strike me so what I have to do is go in there and beat him up. I actually think this is more of a dangerous fight for him than it is for me.”

The live SHOWTIME telecast of the event begins at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). In the highly anticipated main event, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (16-4) will face off with fellow top-ranked superstar Jake Shields (22-4-1) in a 182-pound catch weight fight.

Additionally, “The New York Badass” Phil Baroni (13-10) will collide with Joe “Diesel” Riggs (29-10) in a 170-pound contest.

Doors at the Scottrade Center will open for Strikeforce: “Lawler vs. Shields” at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, June 6. The first non-televised preliminary bout will begin at 7 p.m.

Frank Shamrock took home more than half of the total disclosed salaries for Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz, earning $369,790 for his TKO loss to Nick Diaz. While Diaz only acquired $39,950 (including a $10,000 win bonus) for the victory. The second highest earner on the evening was Scott Smith who took home $49,940 (with a $25,000 win bonus) for his knockout victory over Benji Radach.

Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz took place Saturday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The event drew in 15,211 attendees for a live gate of around $750,000, barely enough to cover payroll.

The official salaries exclude some bonuses, taxes, fees, sponsor payments, and other miscellaneous payments and fees.
