WEC 43 Results: Henderson Edges Cerrone in Instant Classic to Win Interim Title

Ben Henderson was crowned the WEC’s interim lightweight champion on Saturday after earning a unanimous decision victory over Donald Cerrone in an instant classic that headlined WEC 43 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The matchup started with a frenzied pace and rarely slowed, as Cerrone strung together several submissions early in the opening round that appeared close to ending the fight, but Henderson managed to escape and turn the tide with takedowns and ground and pound to steal the frame. Henderson repeated the formula in rounds two and three, escaping more Cerrone submissions while taking the fight to the ground and largely cominating on the canvas.

Cerrone rebounded in the later rounds, shrugging off several takedowns in the fourth while connecting on the feet before finishing strong in the fifth and final round with more striking and several near-submissions.

With Henderson winning the second and third frames, and Cerrone taking the final two, the bout ultimately came down to the opening round and the judges sided unanimously with Henderson’s escapes and ground and pound, earning him 48-47 scores across the board, the interim title, and a future matchup with lightweight champ Jamie Varner.

Henderson improves to 10-1 with his victory in the “Fight of the Year” candidate, while Cerrone falls to 10-2.

The night’s other notable result took place on the preliminary card but made it onto the Versus broadcast, as newcomer Mackens Semerzier upset Wagnney Fabiano, submitting the former IFL featherweight champ with a triangle choke early in the opening round.

Dave Jansen, Raphael Assuncao, and Damacio Page also picked up main card wins, while Anthony Njokuani, Scott Jorgensen, Eddie Wineland, Charlie Valencia, and Deividas Taurosevicius were victorious on the WEC 43 prelims.

WEC 43 headliners Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson, along with the rest of the ten-bout card, successfully made weight on Friday at the official fighter weigh-ins for Saturday’s event, which takes place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Cerrone (154.4) and Henderson (155) meet for the WEC interim lightweight title in the WEC 43 main event, which airs live tomorrow on Versus.

Crunkilton Injured; Cerrone To Fight Newcomer Krause

Richard Crunkilton has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Donnald Cerrone at WEC 41 due to an undisclosed injury, MMA Weekly is reporting.

Stepping in for Crunkilton at the June 7th event, which will take place at the Arco Arena in Sacramento and air live on Versus, is undefeated WEC newcomer James Krause.

Krause (9-0) enters the WEC with a 9-0 record compiled since late-2007 in small regional promotions. Eight of his nine victories have come by way of submission.

Cerrone (9-1) lost his first career bout to lightweight champion Jamie Varner at WEC 38 in December in controversial fashion, with a split technical decision being rendered after Cerrone hit Varner with an illegal knee midway through the final round. The winner of the bout between Cerrone and Crunkilton was likely to fight Varner when he returns to the cage, but with Crunkilton now out a win will likely earn “The Cowboy” a title rematch.

WEC lightweight contenders Donald Cerrone and Richard Crunkilton will square off at WEC 41 on June 7th in Sacramento, California.

Cerrone (9-1) last fought in January, losing via split decision to Jamie Varner while Crunkilton (16-2) has not fought since last March when he defeated Sergio Gomez via unanimous decision at WEC 33.

Richard Crunkilton Forced Off WEC 39 With Injury; Undefeated Newcomer Tapped as Replacement

Richard Crunkilton has been forced out of his WEC 39 matchup against Bart Palaszewski after suffering a knee injury less than a week before the lightweight co-main event was to take place on March 1st in Corpus Christi.

Ricardo Lamas, a 5-0 WEC newcomer, has been tapped to replace Crunkilton and face Palaszewski on short-notice, according to MMA Weekly.

Palaszewski announced that Crunkilton had been forced to withdraw from the fight during an appearance on “The Ground and Pound” earlier Tuesday.

Changes To Sunday’s WEC 38 Lineup; Additions To WEC 39, WEC 40

Injuries have forced two lineup changes for WEC 38 as featherweight Rolando Perez has been tapped to replace Fredson Paixao on the evening’s main card against Jose Aldo and lightweight Ben Henderson will meet Anthony Njokuani in place of Ed Ratcliff on the unaired preliminary card.

WEC 38 “Varner vs. Cerrone” takes place this Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, California. The event, which airs live on Versus, features lightweight title-holder Jamie Varner against Donald Cerrone and a rematch between top featherweights Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver

Wanderlei Silva, Rousimar Palhares, Goran Reljic, and Wilson Gouveia took home $75,000 bonuses for their efforts at UFC 84. Silva won “Knockout of the Night” for his 36-second KO win over Keith Jardine. Palhares was awarded “Submission of the Night” for his slick armbar win over veteran Ivan Salaverry. Reljic and Gouveia took home “Fight of the Night” for their back-and-forth battle that Reljic won via second-round TKO.
UFC 84 drew a live gate of $3.7 million, the fourth best MMA gate ever in Nevada.
The announced attendance for UFC 84 was 14,773.
Tito Ortiz caused quite the commotion at the post-UFC 84 press conference. After reportedly being banned from the event, Ortiz showed up anyways and began fielding questions from reporters before the press event had begun. UFC officials reportedly attempted to stop Ortiz from answering question but ultimately allowed him to field questions briefly before the official press conference go underway. Ortiz was allowed to stay for the event, though four Las Vegas police officers were brought in should things get out of hand.

Rob Yundt will take on Alessio Sakara at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale.
At UFC 87 Heath Herring will fill in for an injured Mark Coleman and take on Brock Lesnar, Clay Guida will face Mac Danzig, Jason MacDonald takes on Demian Maia, and Manny Gamburyan will be in action against an opponent to be announced.
Adrenaline MMA has inked a deal with HDNet to air the promotion’s first three events on the network.
Jeremy Lang has replaced Eric Schambari against Tim McKenzie and Danny Castillo has replaced Richard Crunkilton against Donald Cerrone on the WEC 34 fight card, which is takes place on June 1st.
Ryan Ford will take on UFC veteran Drew Fickett at MFC 17 for the promotion’s vacant welterweight championship.
DREAM has announced the official pairings for the second round of the promtion’s middleweight tournament. The matchups are Kazushi Sakuraba versus Melvin Manhoef, Jason â€œMayhemâ€ Miller versus Ronaldo â€œJacareâ€ Souza, Gegard Mousasi versus Dong Sik Yoon, and Zelg Galesic versus Taiei Kin.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueria will fight Vernon White at Affliction’s debut event, “Banned”, on July 19th.

EliteXC President Gary Shaw revealed this week that the promotion is likely going to introduce a heavyweight title in 2008.
MMA veteran Matt Lindland won the Republican primary for the Oregon House of Representatives by a 14-point margin and will not take on Democratic nominee Suzanne VanOrman in the November 4th general election.
EliteXC will stage a ShoXC event in San Diego, California on June 27th. Hector Lombard will make his debut with the promotion at the event, Cyrille Diabate will face Jamie Fletcher in a main card bout, and King of the Cage middleweight champion Keith Berry will look to defend his title against Reggie Orr.
UFC 88 will take place on September 6th at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
