Rising Sun Round Up: Takanori Gomi’s Opponent Announced For Vale Tudo Japan, Khalidov v. Santiago Set For Sengoku 11, Manhoef and Filho added to Dream 12, and more

Vale Tudo Japan, which is set to take place on October 30th, in Tokyo, is still taking shape. An opponent for lightweight fighter Takanori Gomi, was recently announced. Gomi will be taking on King of the Cage lightweight champion Tony Hervey, in his alleged final fight in Japan. Other expect bouts for the event are “Lion” Takeshi Inoue vs. Alexandre Franca Nogueira, Willamy Chiquerim vs. Kenichiro Togashi, Mamoru Yamaguchi vs. Jesse Taitano, Tenkei Fujimiya vs. Tito Jones. Also expected to participate are Rumina Sato and Yoichiro Sato, but their opponents are yet to be determined.
Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago will take on recent promotional acquisition, Polish light heavyweight star Mamed Khalidov in a non title fight at Sengoku 11 on November 7. Also recently added to the card were a heavyweight bout between “Big” Jim York and Dave “Pee-Wee” Herman, a lightweight number one contender match up pitting Eiji Mitsuoka against Kazunori Yokota, and a featherweight contest of Shigeki Osawa vs. Ronnie Ushiwaka Mann.
Top female fighter Miku Matsumoto extended her winning streak to twelve straight at Deep 44th Impact on October 10, defeating “Windy” Tomomi Sunaba via unanimous decision.
Dream 12, on October 25, has gained two more middleweight bouts as slugger Melvin Manhoef will take on Zelg Galesic, and ground ace and former WEC champion Paulo Filho will face Korean judoka Dong Sik Yoon inside the White Cage. (Dream 12 Poster included below.)

Gegard Mousasi Confirms November 7 Strikeforce Non-Title Fight

Recently crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi has confirmed that he will be defending his title on the CBS televised November 7 Strikeforce event, at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The scheduling of the title defense was recently confirmed by Mousasi with m-1global.com, though no opponent has been confirmed.

Mousasi won the Strikeforce light heavyweight title in his last fight by defeating Renato “Babalu” Sobral on August 15 via first round knockout. He was then scheduled to take part in the Dream SuperHulk tournament last night at Dream 11, but was forced to withdraw due to an injury suffered in his exhibition fight against Fedor Emelianenko at “M-1 Breakthrough”.

Rumored opponents for the bout are Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, who would have been Mousasi’s opponent at Dream 11, and former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho. A bout between Mousasi and Filho would be easy to promote since both fighters have already had unpleasant comments about one another in the media. Among those comments was a claim by Mousasi, in and interview with fighters.com, that Filho was using steroids.

MMAJunkie has spoken with Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz who confirmed Mousasi’s participation in the event, but said the bout would not be a title fight.

FEG Announces That October 25 Dream 12 Will Take Place In A Cage

The Japanese promotional group FEG, which runs the Dream MMA events, has long be suggesting that they had a big surprise in store for their already announced Dream 12 event, which will take place on October 25 in Osaka, Japan. They had already released a short promotional video in which were a few shots of a cage which led some people to believe that would be the surprise. Those people were correct, and Dream has officially confirmed that with a new promotional video for the event (included below).

Since the organizations creation, all of its fights have taken place inside an over sized boxing ring along the lines of the fighting surface popularized by the organization Pride. However the fighting surface for the upcoming Dream 12 will be a six sided cage they have title “The White Cage,” the promotion as appropriately named the October 25 event “Cage of the Rising Sun.”

Also revealed in the promotional video were nine of the fighters to be featured. Those nine fighters are Eddie Alvarez, Paulo Filho, Katsunori Kikuno, Yoshiro Maeda, Andrews Nakahara, Alistair Overeem, Kiyoshi Tamura, and Marius Zaromskis. Another fighter to be featured on the card was revealed on the organizations website, that fighter is Murilo “Ninja” Rua.

Dave Herman needed just 60-seconds to stop Don Frye on Saturday in the main event of Shark Fights 6, forcing a referee stoppage at the one-minute mark of the headliner. Gerald Harris, a cast member on the Ultimate Fighter 7, knocked out former WEC and UFC fighter Nissen Osterneck in the co-main event to with the promotion’s middleweight title.

Ricardo Arona vs. Marvin Eastman Set to Headline Bitetti Combat in Brazil

A light heavyweight tussle between Ricardo Arona (13-5 MMA) and Marvin Eastman (16-9-1 MMA) will headline the upcoming Bitetti Combat 4 card on Saturday. The event takes place in Rio de Janiero, Brazil and features a handful MMA notables.

MMA FanHouse confirmed the entire scheduled fight card with Bitetti Combat.

Bitetti Combat, a promotion started by UFC veteran Amaury Bitetti, will broadcast live on Brazilian network television. The entire card will consist of ten bouts. Integrated into the card are big names such as Murilo “Ninja” Rua, Jeff Monson, Pedro Rizzo, Paulo Filho, as well as the aforementioned Arona and Eastman.

Initially scheduled to fight on the card was Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, who was forced to bow out of a bout with Alex Stiebling due to an ailing foot injury.

Arona is returning after a long layoff in his MMA career. This former top light heavyweight has not fought since a knockout loss to Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in April of 2007. Most know Arona from the PRIDE promotion where he was infamously slammed unconscious on his head by Quinton Jackson.

His opponent, Eastman, is coming off of a May TKO win over Aron Lofton in the MFC promotion. Despite the recent win, he is 1-2 in his previous three fights with losses coming at the hands of UFC vets Denis Kang and Drew McFedries.

Light heavyweight Mike Whitehead, who cut an astonishing 80 pounds over 6 weeks to reach the 205-pound limit for his June Strikeforce victory over Kevin Randleman, will next fight at an October Strikeforce event. The UFC is reportedly in the preliminary stages of planning an outdoor event at the 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, with BJ Penn expected to co-headline the event.
The UFC will go head-to-head with boxing’s biggest stars this fall, as UFC 103, headlined by Dan Henderson vs. Rich Franklin 2, takes place on September 19, the same day as Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s scheduled return to action against Juan Manuel Marquez and UFC 105, slated for November 14 in the UK and likely airing free on Spike, will air opposite Miguel Cotto vs. Manny Pacquiao.
A light heavyweight bout between The Ultimate Fighter 8 cast member Eliot Marshall and Jason Brilz has been added to the rumored lineup for UFC 103. [MMAjunkie]
Palace Fighting Championship and the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California have ended their long-running relationship, with MMA Weekly indicating that the split was not amicable and that the PFC has ceased operations, but could eventually resurface under a different name. DREAM 10 Results: Zaromskis Upsets Sakurai and High to Win Welterweight GP

Marius Zaromskis won the DREAM welterweight grand prix and became the promotion’s first-ever 76kg champion on Sunday by upsetting Hayato “Mach” Sakurai and Jason High with back-to-back knockouts at DREAM 10 in Saitama, Japan.

After sending Sakurai to the canvas with a head kick and finishing him off with punches in the semis, Zaromskis used another head kick, this time early in the first-round, to knock off High and finish his surprising run by winning the tournament.

The Cage Rage veteran Zaromskis improves to 11-2 with 4-straight victories following his DREAM 10 wins, while High, who defeated Andre Galvao to advance to the finals, falls to 8-2 and Sakurai drops to 35-9-2.

In other DREAM 10 action, Shinya Aoki topped Vitor Ribeiro by unanimous decision in a lightweight bout that failed to live up to expectations, TUF 7 cast member Jesse Taylor defeated Dong Sik Yoon, who was unable to continue due to a left ankle injury, and former WEC champ Paulo Filho submitted kickboxer Melvin Manhoef in the opening round of their middleweight matchup.

DREAM 10 Weigh-In Results: Sakurai Struggles, But All 14 Fighters Make Weight

Though it wasn’t without a notable struggle, all 14 fighters successfully made weight on Sunday for DREAM 10, which takes place overnight in Saitama, Japan and airs live on HDNet.

Welterweight grand prix participant Hayato “Mach” Sakurai struggled to reach the 76kg limit for his semifinals bout against Marius Zaromskis, but eventually dropped the necessary weight for his third weigh-in attempt.

The rest of the card, including Andre Galvao, Jason High, and Zaromskis, who will compete alongside Sakurai in the welterweight GP, as well as lightweight opponents Shinya Aoki and Vitor Ribeiro successfully made weight on their first attempts.

Aoki-Ribeiro, Filho-Manhoef Confirmed for DREAM 10

Lightweights Shinya Aoki and Vitor Ribeiro and middleweights Paulo Filho and Melvin Manhoef will square off at DREAM 10 on July 20th in Saitama, Japan, the promotion announced on Tuesday.

Aoki (20-4), who was originally rumored to be rematching lightweight champion Joachim Hansen on the card, had won three-straight bouts before moving up to welterweight to take on Hayato Sakurai, suffering a TKO loss in just 27-seconds at DREAM 8 in April. An accomplished grappler, Ribeiro (20-2) returned to action in April following a September 2007 loss to Gesias Calvancante, defeating Katsuhiko Nagata via first-round TKO at DREAM 8.

Filho (16-1), a former WEC middleweight champion, checked into rehab for substance abuse following his controversial title defense over Chael Sonnen in late-2007. After missing weight for their rematch, Filho looked unimpressive in suffering a unanimous decision loss to Sonnen in a non-title bout last November. A kickboxer, Mahoef has won six of his last seven bouts, earning all six victories by first-round (T)KO.

DREAM also added a lightweight bout between Katsunori Kikuno and Andre Amade to the July 20th card.
