Sam Stout’s unanimous decision victory over Matt Wiman was “Fight of the Night”, Krzysztof Soszynski’s first-round kimura submission of Brian Stann was “Submission of the Night”, and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s first-round TKO of Chuck Liddell earned “Knockout of the Night”. Stout, Wiman, Soszynski, and Rua each earned $70,000 for their UFC 97 performances.

If Georges St-Pierre defeats Thiago Alves in July he could fight Anderson Silva in Toronto.

Chuck Liddell is done fighting, according to UFC president Dana White, who effectively announced the former UFC light heavyweight champion’s retirement and confirmed he’ll instead assume a new role with the company.

White said he wasn’t sure if David Loiseau will get another opportunity in the UFC, but that he is a really nice guy and he’ll consult Joe Silva before making a decision on Loiseau’s future with the promotion.

White also said that Cheick Kongo is a serious contender for the heavyweight belt and is in the mix for a future title shot.

Sam Stout said he arrived at the arena at 5pm and basically did a six hour warmup after his fight was pushed back from the first fight of the event to the next-to-last bout.

Houston Alexander vs. Andre Gusmao, Matt Wiman vs. Sam Stout, and Derek Downey vs. Nick Catone have been revealed for upcoming UFC cards over the last 24 hours:

Light heavyweights Houston Alexander and Andre Gusmao will clash at UFC 98 on May 23rd in Las Vegas. After back-to-back knockout wins over Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara to start his UFC career Alexander (8-4) has dropped three-straight to Thiago Silva, James Irvin, and Eric Schafer. Gusmao (5-1), a veteran of the IFL, lost to Jon Jones via unanimous decision in his UFC debut in August. The loser of this matchup will almost assuredly be cut by the UFC, at least temporarily.

Lightweights Matt Wiman and Sam Stout will square off at UFC 97 on April 18th in Montreal. After dropping his UFC debut to Spencer Fisher Wiman (10-4) won four-straight bouts before losing via unanimous decision to Jim Miller in December. Stout has loss three of his last four UFC bouts, picking up a victory over Per Eklund early last year while losing fights to Spencer Fisher, Rich Clementi, and Terry Etim.

Nick Catone finally has an opponent for his UFC debut as he’ll take on newcomer Derek Downey in place of an injured Amir Sadollah at UFC Fight Night 17 on February 7th. Downey is 10-3 as a professional while Catone brings an undefeated 5-0 mark into the bout.

Josh Koscheck, Steve Cantwell, Jim Miller, and Matt Wiman each received a $30,000 “fight night” bonus for their efforts at UFC Fight Night 16 “UFC Fight For The Troops”, which took place last night at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina and aired live on Spike TV.

In the headline bout, welterweight contender Josh Koscheck scored a highlight reel knockout of Yoshiyuki Yoshida to capture “Knockout of the Night” honors, stunning his opponent with a straight right then sealing the deal with another right hand that put Yoshida out cold on the canvas. The third knockout of Koscheck’s 15-fight career and his most brutal to date capped the 10-bout event.

Steve Cantwell, the WEC’s final light heavyweight champion, looked impressive in his UFC debut, submitting previously unbeaten Razak Al-Hassan with a gruesome first-round armbar to earn “Submission of the Night”. With a tight armbar already secure, Cantwell looked to elicit the tap out by further extending the extremity to one of the most extreme angles ever seen in the octagon, but Al-Hassan refused to tap forcing the referee to intervene after Al-Hassan’s arm had been broken.

“Fight of the Night” went to lightweights Jim Miller and Matt Wiman, who kicked off the Spike TV broadcast with a standup brawl. Despite accepting the fight on short notice, Miller blasted Wiman with strikes for three-full rounds but was unable to finish him off while Wiman was able to survive Miller’s striking and submission attempts to make it to the final bell.
