Matt Hughes Signs Multi-Fight Extension With UFC, Next Fight Not Decided

Former welterweight champion and future hall of famer Matt Hughes recently signed a multi-fight extension with the UFC, but an opponent has not yet been determined for his next fight.

Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann Possible With Swick-Hughes Unlikely

After his UFC 99 win over Ben Saunders earlier this month, welterweight contender Mike Swick called out Georges St-Pierre, Thiago Alves, and Matt Hughes as possible opponents for his next fight. With GSP and Alves set to square off in less than 2 weeks at UFC 100, a matchup between Swick and Hughes appeared most likely, with rumors indicating the fight could co-headline UFC 103 in Dallas.

In a recent interview with Raw Vegas, Swick said that they’re still trying to organize a fight with Hughes, but that he could take on fellow-contender Martin Kampmann later this year instead.

Shane Carwin vs. Cain Velasquez and Matt Hughes vs. Mike Swick could co-headline UFC 103 on September 26 in Dallas if current rumors are accurate.

A potential bout between heavyweight contenders Carwin and Velasquez began to be discussed after Velasquez’s UFC 99 victory over Cheick Kongo earlier this month, which cemented his status as a contender for the heavyweight title much like Carwin did with a UFC 96 win over Gabriel Gonzaga. Both Velasquez (6-0) and Carwin (11-0) are undefeated and in line for a title shot, though each needs one more victory over top competition before fighting for the belt.
