DREAM 9 Results: Miller and Jacare No Contest; Kid, JZ, and Sapp Upset

A new DREAM middleweight champion failed to be crowned on Tuesday at DREAM 9, as Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza fought to a no contest in their headliner for the vacant title at the Yokohama Arena in Kanagawa, Japan.

Early in the bout, Miller connected with a kick to the top of Souza’s head while his opponent was on the ground, opening up a cut that would ultimately force the bout to come to a premature conclusion. The kick was deemed unintentional, but when the bout was eventually halted the fight was declared a no contest.

In other DREAM 9 action upsets were plentiful, as Joe Warren topped Norifumi “Kid Yamamoto by split decision in the second round of the featherweight grand prix, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante suffered a unanimous decision loss to Tatsuya Kawajiri in a lightweight title eliminator, and Bob Sapp was submitted by Ikuhisa Minowa just over one-minute into their Super Hulk tournament matchup.

Super Hulk Tournament Featuring Canseco, Sapp, and Mousasi Announced For DREAM 9

Fighting and Entertainment Group announced on Thursday an eight-man open weight “Super Hulk Tournament”, which will begin on May 26th at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan at DREAM 9.

The tournament’s opening round matchups are:

Ikuhisa Minowa vs. Bob Sapp
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Jan Nortje
Gegard Mousasi vs. Mark Hunt
Hong Man Choi vs. Jose Canseco

In other DREAM 9 news, Japanese broadcast partner TBS will air boxer Daisuke Naito’s flyweight title defense against Xiong Zhao Zhong as a lead-in for the event, which should provide the promotion a greater initial audience which they’ll be tasked to retain. With the mixture of legitimate and freakshow matchups booked for the card, it shouldn’t be hard to prevent fans from tuning out.

During a recent media confrence call EliteXC confirmed that popular but controversial heavyweight Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson will return to the cage in the fall, most likely in September or October on a CBS televised card, but his opponent for the bout has not yet been determined.
“The Ultimate Fighter 4″ runner-up Chris Lytle has signed a four-fight contract extension with the UFC and has agreed to take on Paul Taylor at UFC 89 on October 18th in Birmingham, England. [MMAJunkie]
Floyd Mayweather Jr. was awarded the “Best Fighter” ESPY earlier this week, topping UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre for the award.
Alistair Overeem will take on Mark Hunt at DREAM 5 on July 21st in Osaka, Japan. [The Fight Network]
Norifumi â€œKidâ€ Yamamoto has withdrawn from his scheduled DREAM 5 bout against Joseph Benavidez after suffering a torn ACL during a recent training session.
Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic has announced that he will be fighting on September 23rd at DREAM 6. An opponent for the bout hasn’t yet been determined.
Though the event is still three months away, less than 2,500 tickets remain available for UFC 89 on October 18th at the NIA in Birmingham, England. Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben and Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva will headline the fall event. [Telegraph]

Fedor Emelianenko’s manager, Vadim Finkelstein, has announced that the top-ranked heavyweight plans on fighting two more times in 2008. The first bout will be at an October Affliction-promoted event and the second will come in December at a New Year’s Eve event in Japan.
UFC veteran Joe Jordan will take on Ryan Ford in the main event of MFC 17 on July 25th for the promotion’s middleweight title. Jordan replaces Drew Fickett, who was pulled from the bout due to breach of contract.
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson suffered no serious damage in his unanimous decision loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 86 and is set to return to the gym to resume training on Monday.
Ranked lightweight Takanori Gomi will likely face DEEP lightweight champion Pang Sung Hwan at Sengoku 4 on August 24th in Japan.
Affliction has announced that it has signed Edwin Dewees to a multi-fight contract. Filling in forÂ Vernon White, who was recently suspended due to a failed drug test, Dewees will debut against Antonio Rogerio Nogueria at Affliction “Banned” on July 19th.
Hermes Franca has been cleared for his July 19th UFC bout against Frankie Edgar pending the results of a mandatory pre-fight drug test.
ICON Middleweight Champion Kala â€œKoloheâ€ Hose will fight Rolando Dominique at an August 2nd event at the Blaisdell Arena in Hawaii. The fight will be a non-title bout contested at a catchweight of 180-pounds.
UFC middleweight Martin Kampann, who is 4-0 inside the octagon, will undergo another surgery on his knee but is expected to be able to return to the cage in October or November.
Portland, Oregon may host UFC 91 in November.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission has released official gate figures for The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale and UFC 86. The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale had a live gate of $495,350 and a paid attendance of 1,853. UFC 86 had a live gate of $3,350,730 and a paid attendance of 9,630. The closed circuit broadcast of UFC 86 brought in an additional $33,650.
Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante will meet Travis Galbraith on the Showtime card of EliteXC Saturday Night Fights 2.
Female MMA promotion Smackgirl has postponed a July 24th event until September likely due to financial problems.
