Strikeforce Signs DREAM Welterweight Champ Marius Zaromskis

Strikeforce announced on Saturday that it has signed DREAM welterweight champ Marius “Whitemare” Zaromskis to a multi-fight contract, with his debut likely to come at the promotion’s December 19 event in San Jose, California.

As part of an alliance formed between DREAM and Strikeforce earlier this year, Zaromskis will continue to fight for both organizations.

Zaromskis (13-3) won the welterweight title in July with back-to-back head kick knockouts of Hayato “Mach” Saturai and Jason High at DREAM 10, then returned to action last month with a 19-second head kick KO of Ho Bae Myeon in a non-title bout at DREAM 12. Two of Zaromskis’ three career losses came against Che Mills in England’s Cage Rage, where he competed seven times between 2006 and 2008 before joining DREAM earlier this year.

DREAM 12 Results: Alistair Overeem, Eddie Alvarez Among Winners

Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem and Bellator lightweight title-holder Eddie Alvarez were among the winners on Sunday at DREAM 12 in Osaka, Japan.

Overeem submitted James Thompson with a guillotine choke in under a minute in the DREAM 12 main event, while Alvarez used an arm-triangle choke to defeat Katsunori Kikuno in the second-round of their featured matchup.

Also at DREAM 12, welterweight champ Marius Zaromskis picked up a first-round headkick knockout of Myeon Ho Bae in non-title action, Kazushi Sakuraba submitted Zelg Galesic with a kneebar in the opening frame, and Yoshiro Maeda choked out Chase Beebe in the first.

All eighteen fighters scheduled to compete at tomorrow’s DREAM 12 event in Osaka, Japan hit the scales earlier today to weigh-in for their bouts. Lightweight Won Sik Park was the long fighter on the card who failed to make weight on their first attempt, with notables Alistair Overeem, James Thompson, Eddie Alvarez, Kazushi Sakuraba, and Chase Beebe all hitting their marks.

DREAM recently announced additions and changes to the fight card for its October 25 DREAM 12 event, including Kazushi Sakuraba replacing Melvin Manhoef against Zelg Galesic and welterweight champ Marius Zaromskis’ return to action in a non-title bout against Myeon Ho Bae. Paulo Filho is off the card after failing to arrive in Japan for his fight with Dong Sik Yoon due to visa issues, and will be replaced by Tarec Saffedine. Rumina Sato, originally scheduled to fight Joe Warren at Vale Tudo Japan, will instead fight Warren’s Team Quest training partner Corey “Savage” Gran at the October 30 event after Warren was forced to withdraw after suffering a knee injury while training.
World Victory Road announced additions to its November 11 Sengoku 11th Battle card on Wednesday, confirming Akihiro Gono vs. Yoon Young Kim and Hirokazu “Bull” Konno vs. Tomoaki Ueyama for the HDNet-televised event, which takes place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan. World Victory Road also announced several participants for their New Years Eve show, which will go head to head with FEG’s Dynamite!! 2009. The event and will feature the new name of Sengoku Raiden Championships, replacing Sengoku, but continuing their existing number system, making the event Sengoku Raiden Championships. So far the only confirmed match-up is Satoshi Ishii making his MMA debut against Hidehiko Yoshida. Other participants that have been announced are Mizuto Hirota, Masanori Kanehara, Satoru Kitaoka, Hatsu Hioki, Michihiro Omigawa, Kazunori Yokota, Eiji Mitsuoka, Makoto Takimoto, Hiroshi Izumi and Kazuhiro Nakamura.
Former UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia will return to action on New Year’s Eve at DREAM/K-1 Dynamite!! 2009 in Saitama, Japan, likely fighting Alistair Overeem or Hong Man Choi at the December 31 event, according to Sylvia’s manager Monte Cox, who confirmed the bout with MMA Fanhouse on Wednesday.

FEG Announces That October 25 Dream 12 Will Take Place In A Cage

The Japanese promotional group FEG, which runs the Dream MMA events, has long be suggesting that they had a big surprise in store for their already announced Dream 12 event, which will take place on October 25 in Osaka, Japan. They had already released a short promotional video in which were a few shots of a cage which led some people to believe that would be the surprise. Those people were correct, and Dream has officially confirmed that with a new promotional video for the event (included below).

Since the organizations creation, all of its fights have taken place inside an over sized boxing ring along the lines of the fighting surface popularized by the organization Pride. However the fighting surface for the upcoming Dream 12 will be a six sided cage they have title “The White Cage,” the promotion as appropriately named the October 25 event “Cage of the Rising Sun.”

Also revealed in the promotional video were nine of the fighters to be featured. Those nine fighters are Eddie Alvarez, Paulo Filho, Katsunori Kikuno, Yoshiro Maeda, Andrews Nakahara, Alistair Overeem, Kiyoshi Tamura, and Marius Zaromskis. Another fighter to be featured on the card was revealed on the organizations website, that fighter is Murilo “Ninja” Rua.

DREAM 10 Results: Zaromskis Upsets Sakurai and High to Win Welterweight GP

Marius Zaromskis won the DREAM welterweight grand prix and became the promotion’s first-ever 76kg champion on Sunday by upsetting Hayato “Mach” Sakurai and Jason High with back-to-back knockouts at DREAM 10 in Saitama, Japan.

After sending Sakurai to the canvas with a head kick and finishing him off with punches in the semis, Zaromskis used another head kick, this time early in the first-round, to knock off High and finish his surprising run by winning the tournament.

The Cage Rage veteran Zaromskis improves to 11-2 with 4-straight victories following his DREAM 10 wins, while High, who defeated Andre Galvao to advance to the finals, falls to 8-2 and Sakurai drops to 35-9-2.

In other DREAM 10 action, Shinya Aoki topped Vitor Ribeiro by unanimous decision in a lightweight bout that failed to live up to expectations, TUF 7 cast member Jesse Taylor defeated Dong Sik Yoon, who was unable to continue due to a left ankle injury, and former WEC champ Paulo Filho submitted kickboxer Melvin Manhoef in the opening round of their middleweight matchup.

DREAM 10 Weigh-In Results: Sakurai Struggles, But All 14 Fighters Make Weight

Though it wasn’t without a notable struggle, all 14 fighters successfully made weight on Sunday for DREAM 10, which takes place overnight in Saitama, Japan and airs live on HDNet.

Welterweight grand prix participant Hayato “Mach” Sakurai struggled to reach the 76kg limit for his semifinals bout against Marius Zaromskis, but eventually dropped the necessary weight for his third weigh-in attempt.

The rest of the card, including Andre Galvao, Jason High, and Zaromskis, who will compete alongside Sakurai in the welterweight GP, as well as lightweight opponents Shinya Aoki and Vitor Ribeiro successfully made weight on their first attempts.

DREAM 10 Welterweight GP Semis Set

Match ups have been set for the semi final round of the DREAM welterweight grand prix, to take place on DREAM 10, on July 20. The finals will take place the same night pitting the respective winners against one another. According to reports by MMAWeekly the match-ups will be Andre Galvao vs. Jason High, and Hayato “Mach” Sakurai vs. Marius Zaromskis.

Ground ace, Galvao, made it past the first round of the tournament by submitting veteran fighter John Alessio, improving his record to 3-0. His opponent, High, got back in the win column with a quick submission victory over Yuya Shirai in the GP opening round, and brings a 7-1 record into the event.

Sakurai will look to improve on his 35-8-2 record in the second round of the tournament, after defeating fan favorite, Shinya Aoki via TKO in their highly anticipated first round bout. He will be facing off against Marius Zaromskis, who brings a 9-2 record into the event after an opening round unanimous decision win over Seichi Ikemoto.

The winners of the semi-final match-ups will then face one another in the tournament finals later in the evening. Also reported for the event is a lightweight rubber match between Shinya Aoki and Joachim Hansen for the DREAM lightweight title, that Hansen holds.

DREAM 8 Results: Hayato “Mach” Sakurai KOs Shinya Aoki in Headliner

Hayato “Mach” Sakurai needed just 27-seconds to knockout Shinya Aoki on Sunday at the Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan, pinning him in the corner of the ring before unloading a series of knees and punches that forced the referee to intervene before 30-seconds had elapsed in the DREAM 8 main event.

Sakurai improves to 35-8-2 with the victory and now advances to the semifinals of the promotion’s 2009 welterweight grand prix while Aoki, who falls to 20-4 with the loss, is likely to return to the lightweight division for his next bout.

With victories at DREAM 8, Jason High, Marius Zaromskis, and Andre Galvao also advanced to the welterweight semis.

The opening round of DREAM’s featherweight grand prix, which got underway with six bouts at DREAM 7, concluded on Sunday as Daiki “DJ.taiki” Hata advanced with a win over Hideo Tokoro.

Notables Jeff Monson and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro also picked up wins in non-tournament action, while Murilo “Ninja” Rua dropped an exciting unanimous decision to late-replacement Riki Fukuda.
