Forrest Griffin edged Tito Ortiz by split decision on Saturday in the main event of UFC 106 in Las Vegas, using a dominant third round to even their career series at 1-1 in the pay-per-view headliner.

The first two rounds between the pair were close, as Ortiz wrestled Griffin to the ground several times and unloaded ground and pound while Forrest connected with punches and kicks on the feet, but Griffin dominated the third, battering Ortiz with strikes to earn the split decision with scores of 28-29, 30-27, and 29-28.

Griffin snaps a two-fight losord his ing streak and improves to 17-6 with the win, while the returning Ortiz, fighting for the first time in 18-months, falls to 15-7-1 after failing to record his first victory since 2006.

Excuses were aplenty after the bout, as Griffin said a broken foot hampered his performance in the fight, while Ortiz said his training was limited due to bulging discs in his surgically-repaired back as well as a facial fracture that resulted in a noticeable black eye.

The narrow decision and satisfying action means a rubber match between the former light heavyweight champions is likely, and both fighters indicated after the matchup that they were open to meeting again.

In the UFC 106 co-headliner, welterweight contender Josh Koscheck resorted to his wrestling to take out knockout artist Anthony Johnson, recovering from an illegal knee and powerful combination suffered in the first to force Johnson to tap to a rear naked choke late in the second round.

After the win, Koscheck, improving to 14-4 with his second-straight win, called out upcoming welterweight challenger Dan Hardy and plead for a rematch with title-holder Georges St-Pierre. Johnson falls to 8-3 and has his three-fight win streak snapped in the loss.

Also on the UFC 106 main card, Paulo Thiago grinded out a unanimous decision over newcomer Jacob Volkmann, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira made his UFC debut with a first-round knockout of Luiz Cane, and Amir Sadollah battered a return Phil Baroni en route to a unanimous decision victory.

In preliminary card action, Ben Saunders picked up a first-round knockout of Marcus Davis, Kendall Grove forced Jake Rosholt to tap to an opening-round triangle choke, Brian Foster recovered from two illegal strikes to take out Brock Larson via second-round TKO, Fabricio Camoes and Caol Uno fought to a majority draw after Camoes lost a point, and George Sotiropoulos submitted Jason Dent with an armbar in the night’s first fight.

The official results for UFC 106 were:

Forrest Griffin def. Tito Ortiz via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28)

Josh Koscheck def. Anthony Johnson via submission (rear naked choke) — Round 2, 4:47

Paulo Thiago def. Jacob Volkmann via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira def. Luiz Cane via TKO (strikes) – Round 1, 1:56

Amir Sadollah def. Phil Baroni via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Ben Saunders def. Marcus Davis via KO (knee) – Round 1, 3:24

Kendall Grove def. Jake Rosholt via submission (triangle choke) – Round 1, 3:59

Brian Foster def. Brock Larson via TKO (strikes) — Round 2, 3:25

Fabricio Camoes vs. Caol Uno – majority draw (29-27 28-28 28-28)

The event is headlined by Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin, and co-headlined by Josh Koscheck vs. Anthony Johnson.

The card has undergone many changes due to injuries and illness, including the removal of the original headlining heavyweight title bout between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, which was replaced by the scheduled co-main event of Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin. That bout too underwent some changes, as Ortiz had originally been slated to face Mark Coleman who had to withdraw because of an injury, only to be replaced by Griffin, prior to the bout being elevated to main event status.

The current co-main event for UFC 106, Koscheck vs. Johnson, was only added to the card just recently, following the other changes to the top of the bill.

The now confirmed fight card for the event is:

MAIN CARD

Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin

Josh Koscheck vs. Anthony Johnson

Amir Sadollah vs. Phil Baroni

As we reported yesterday, light heavyweight Keith Jardine has been shifted to UFC 97 on April 18th in Montreal, Canada where he’ll face off with powerful striker Luis Cane.

MMAFrenzy.com has confirmed the 205-pound matchup, which was first reported by MMA Bay.

Though still considered among the best 205-pound fighters in the UFC, Jardine (14-4-1) has had mixed success inside the octagon since back-to-back victories over Wilson Gouveia and Forrest Griffin in 2006. “The Dean of Mean” suffered sub-one-minute knockout losses to Houston Alexander and Wanderlei Silva, but picked up victories over Chuck Liddell and, most-recently, Brandon Vera to improve his record inside the octagon to 4-3.

Luis Cane (9-1) brought his undefeated record to the UFC in late-2007, but suffered his first loss at UFC 79 by way of disqualification after illegally kneeing opponent James Irvin in the head. “Banha” rebounded strongly with technical knockouts of Jason Lambert at UFC 85 and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at UFC 89.

Though the event is still unannounced, UFC 97 is expected to feature Anderson Silva defending the middleweight championship against Thales Leites, while a heavyweight unification fight between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir as well as a grudge match between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra are also possible for the card. David Loiseau vs. Ed Herman and Jonathan Goulet vs. Tamdan McCrory are also scheduled for the event.

Luiz Cane scored his second-straight UFC victory with a second round TKO due to strikes of feared light heavy knockout artist Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou to earn the “Knockout of the Night” bonus.

Making his UFC debut, lightweight Jim Miller submitted David Baron with a textbook rear naked choke midway through the third round of their preliminary fight to win the “Submission of the Night” award. This bout is now available for viewing on UFC.com.

Welterweights Chris Lytle and Paul Taylor went toe-to-toe in a three-round standup brawl to earn “Fight of the Night” honors.

While still a large sum, especially for preliminary card fighters, the $40,000 bonuses are down from the $60,000 “Fight Night” bonuses following UFC 88 in September, which aired on pay-per-view, and $50,000 bonuses for UFC 85 in June, which also took place in the UK and aired on Spike TV.

Middleweight contender Michael Bisping extended his 185-pound win streak to three-straight on Saturday night, defeating challenger Chris Leben via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 89 “Bisping vs. Leben” in front of a sold out crowd at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England.

Despite entering the bout in his best physical and mental shape of his career, Leben pressed forward but was unable to connect with his knockout power, while Bisping employed a perfect strategy to top Leben on the judge’s scorecards, avoiding Leben’s power while countering with precision strikes.

Leben opened the bout aggressively with leg kicks but Bisping took control midway through the close opening round, countering with punches and bloodying the nose of his opponent. In the second it was all Bisping, who dodged Leben’s attacks while carefully countering with punches. In the close final round (which MMAFrenzy.com scored in favor of Leben), a desperate Leben was again aggressive, chasing Bisping down with wild strikes, but was unable to score a knockout.

The judges rendered a unanimous decision victory in favor of Bisping with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 in favor of the English fighter.

With the win Bisping improved to 17-1 on his career, including a perfect 3-0 record at 185-pounds, and moved closer to a middleweight title shot, though when questioned on a potential title fight after the victory, Bisping said he feels he needs several more wins over quality opponents before he’d be prepared for the middleweight title holder.

Up next for Bisping is a stint as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter 9 with a key middleweight matchup against Dan Henderson or Rich Franklin looming in 2009.

The obviously-improved Leben dropped to 18-5 in the loss, but was gracious in defeat, thanking the UK fans and Bisping for a fight he called the most-enjoyable of his career, despite being a losing effort.

In the co-main event of the evening, Keith Jardine defeated Brandon Vera via split decision after three close rounds. After a exchanging early, Jardine captured the first round with a takedown and ground and pound, escaping a near-submission by the Jiu Jitsu brown belt to punctuate the round with a late-flurry of strikes. Vera countered by winning the second with a knee-buckling kick and better striking, but Jardine rebounded to win the final frame on two of the judge’s scorecards to take the split decision with scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 28-29.

Despite losses in two of his last five fights, the win moves Jardine, now 14-4-1 on his career, back into the light heavyweight title picture with wins over current light heavyweight title-holder Forrest Griffin, former champion Chuck Liddell, and now the former heavyweight contender Vera in three of his last five.

Vera, suffering his third loss in his last four bouts inside the octagon, saw his record drop to 9-3 in the loss, including a 1-1 mark at 205-pounds.

In other main card action, Luiz Cane stopped Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou for the “Knockout of the Night” with strikes late in the second round, Chris Lytle and Paul Taylor went toe-to-toe in the “Fight of the Night” with Lytle walking away with a controversial unanimous decision win (29-28, 30-27, 29-28), and Marcus Davis submitted Paul Kelly via guillotine choke midway through the second round in the first televised bout of the evening.

The wins likely line up Davis and Lytle for an early-2009 meeting at UFC 93 in Ireland.

Lytle, Taylor, Cane, and Davis each took home an extra $40,000 bonus for their efforts.

On the preliminary card, Dan Hardy topped Akihiro Gono via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28), Shane Carwin pounded out Neil Wain early in the first round, David Bielkheden defeated Jess Liaudin via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27), Terry Etim topped Sam Stout via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27), Jim Miller earned “Submission of the Night” honors by choking out David Baron with a rear naked choke midway through the third round, and Per Eklund forced Samy Schiavo to submit to a rear naked choke early in the third round of the opening bout of the evening.

The UFC’s next event is just one week away as the promotion returns to the US and heads to Chicago, Illinois for UFC 90 “Silva vs. Cote”. The middleweight title will be on the line in the main event as UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva battles top contender Patrick Cote. Welterweights Josh Koscheck and Yoshiyuki Yoshida are set to clash in the evening’s co-main event.

As always, MMAFrenzy.com will have extensive live coverage of UFC 90 “Silva vs. Cote” on Saturday, October 25th.
