Shane Carwin def. Christian Wellisch via KO – Round 1, 0:44

NEWS AND NOTES

Shane Carwin was touted as the next big thing in the heavyweight division by some of the industry’s most prominent analysts and he just went a long way in proving it on the biggest MMA stage in the world. Given the quick knockout and Carwin’s marketable status, this fight is a strong candidate for being shown during the PPV broadcast.

Dong Hyun Kim also makes an impressive debut, thoroughly drubbing Jason Tan en route to an early third-round technical knockout win via strikes.

It’s not a good night to be a UFC veteran against a newcomer as Yoshida becomes the third straight UFC rookie to score an impressive win over a UFC veteran in his debut. The fight is another candidate to be shown on the PPV broadcast, though Carwin’s win will likely be give priorty status. Whether or not the UFC opts to show this fight given the time during the broadcast will reveal whether they’re interested in promoting a new fighter in Yoshida or a familiar fan favorite in “War Machine”.

Though his performance tonight was not overly-spectacular, Clementi is surely on the rise in 155-pound division after posting six-straight wins, including wins in the UFC over Melvin Guillard, Sam Stout, and, tonight at UFC 84, Terry Etim.

After posting a late-first-round victory over Kazuhiro Nakamura, Sokoudjou called out Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

At 37-years-old Ivan Salaverry has likely fought professionally for the last time in his career. He has expressed recently that retirement was looming and a first-round loss to a UFC newcomer doesn’t help his cause. With tonight’s loss he’s dropped three of his last four bouts, UFC losses to Nate Marquardt, Terry Martin, and now Palhares, and has fought just four times in the past 36-months.

The heavy underdog Mendes looked good early against Thiago Silva, landing a solid head kick but it didn’t take long for the favorite, Silva, to capitalize on a botched judo throw and pound his way to a victory. Silva, now 13-0 in his career, will almost surely receive a step up in competition as he’s now emerged as a legitimate 205-pound contender.

Though he nearly submitted his opponent Lyoto Machida very late in round three via triangle choke, Tito Ortiz was sent away from the UFC on a losing note as scripted. Stating that the feud between him and Dana White was personal, Ortiz surprisingly didn’t use what is likely his final octagon moment to ridicule his longtime rival. Instead, Ortiz thanked UFC owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta as well as the UFC fans for their support. After Ortiz stated that he will be fighting for up to four more years in what he hopes are greener pastures, UFC commentator Joe Rogan sent Ortiz out on a high note, thanking him for his contributions to the sport and the UFC.

In another bout between a UFC veteran and a UFC newcomer the newcomer was again the victor. After going back-and-forth for the entire fight and nearly being pounded out by Gouveia, Reljic, a protege of Mirko “Cro Cop”, returned to his feet and nailed Gouveia with a left to the temple that dropped him to the mat. Reljic then pounded his way to a TKO victory, his first inside the UFC octagon. A very impressive and entertaining debut by the Croatian newcomer.

In a very surprising bout, former PRIDE champion Wanderlei Silva dropped Keith Jardine less than 30-seconds into the opening round of their featured bout and pounded Jardine out cold to secure a surprising, and much-needed, win.

Penn’s victory over Sherk appeared to be inevitable from the outset of the match as Penn looked cool and collected, controlling the bout and doing most of the damage while evading the majorty of Sherk’s punches and takedown attempts. After being crowned the undisputed lightweight champ, and at the prodding of Joe Rogan, Penn laid the framework for a future welterweight fightahainst champion George St. Pierre. GSP, however, faces Jon Fitch in August while Penn likely has a future date with Roger Huerta or Kenny Florian pending their UFC 87 throwdown.

EXTENDED RESULTS

Round 2 – The frantaic pace resumes in the second as Penn and Sherk go back and forth with combinations and hard punches. Penn starts to throw knees but they’ve yet to connect. The dirty boxing match continues and both Penn and BJ continue to go back and forth. Penn landing his jabs while Sherk’s hook is missing.
Round 3 – Sherk finds the mark and Penn quickly counters. Neither is willing to take the fight to the gorund as both are content to stand and trade, albeit wildly. We pass the midway point and it’s more of the same as both continue to go back-and-forth with mild punches and an occasional kick. Sherk’s right hand appears to be injured as he’s transitioned to a leg kick focused gameplan as the title bout wages on. Penn presses the action late, pushing Sherk to the cage before landing a knee that crumples Sherk. BJ jumps on top and pounds on Sherk until the horn sounds to wrap up the round. Sherk appeared to have been saved by the bell but he’s unable to continue and the fight is called.

Gouveia connects solidly but Reljic pulls guard. Reljic attempts an omoplata just before the opening round concludes. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round 10-9 Reljic.

Round 2 – Little action early in round two and they trade mild punches back-and-forth. Reljic connects with a kick.s Gouveia returns with a flurry. He connect with a hard left that drops Reljic and Gouveia gets on top and starts to pound away. Reljic does a good job of controlling Gouveia’s head and minimizing damage. Reljic gets back to his feet but eats a right. Back on his feet, Reljic quickly connects with a left to the temple that knocks Gouveia to the mat. Reljic pounds away and Gouveia is able to defend early but the barrage is too much and the referee stops the bout in favor of yet another UFC newcomer.

Goran Reljic defeats Wilson Gouveia via TKO – Round 2, 3:15

Ortiz is chasing Machida around the octagon but Machida is remaining active and carefully employing his offense. Ortiz pulls guard late following a takedown but it’s too little, too late for Ortiz. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round 10-9 Machida.

Round 3 – The pair dance early and there’s excitement early on as referee Yves Lavigne falls and quickly returns to his feet. Ortiz clinches and works body shots against the cage. They trade kicks then Ortiz lands a knee. Ortiz grabs a leg but Machida is again able to slip away. They clinch and trade with Ortiz getting the better of the lockup. They stall and are separated. Machida lands a shot that knocks Ortiz to the mat and he immediately follows with some punches but is unable to finish Ortiz. Ortiz secures what appeared to be a near-fight-ending triangle choke but the slippery Machida was able to escape and survive the round. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round 10-9 Machida.
Round 3 – Clementi gets a takedown to open the final round but is unable to do little damage from Etim’s guard.
