DREAM 12 Results: Alistair Overeem, Eddie Alvarez Among Winners

Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem and Bellator lightweight title-holder Eddie Alvarez were among the winners on Sunday at DREAM 12 in Osaka, Japan.

Overeem submitted James Thompson with a guillotine choke in under a minute in the DREAM 12 main event, while Alvarez used an arm-triangle choke to defeat Katsunori Kikuno in the second-round of their featured matchup.

Also at DREAM 12, welterweight champ Marius Zaromskis picked up a first-round headkick knockout of Myeon Ho Bae in non-title action, Kazushi Sakuraba submitted Zelg Galesic with a kneebar in the opening frame, and Yoshiro Maeda choked out Chase Beebe in the first.

Lightweight Won Sik Park was the long fighter on the card who failed to make weight on their first attempt, with notables Alistair Overeem, James Thompson, Eddie Alvarez, Kazushi Sakuraba, and Chase Beebe all hitting their marks.

DREAM 8 Results: Hayato “Mach” Sakurai KOs Shinya Aoki in Headliner

Hayato “Mach” Sakurai needed just 27-seconds to knockout Shinya Aoki on Sunday at the Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan, pinning him in the corner of the ring before unloading a series of knees and punches that forced the referee to intervene before 30-seconds had elapsed in the DREAM 8 main event.

Sakurai improves to 35-8-2 with the victory and now advances to the semifinals of the promotion’s 2009 welterweight grand prix while Aoki, who falls to 20-4 with the loss, is likely to return to the lightweight division for his next bout.

With victories at DREAM 8, Jason High, Marius Zaromskis, and Andre Galvao also advanced to the welterweight semis.

The opening round of DREAM’s featherweight grand prix, which got underway with six bouts at DREAM 7, concluded on Sunday as Daiki “DJ.taiki” Hata advanced with a win over Hideo Tokoro.

Notables Jeff Monson and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro also picked up wins in non-tournament action, while Murilo “Ninja” Rua dropped an exciting unanimous decision to late-replacement Riki Fukuda.

Fighters Weigh In For DREAM 8; Fukuda To Fight “Ninja”

All twenty DREAM 8 fighters, including headliners Hayato “Mach” Sakurai and Shinya Aoki, successfully made weight today in Japan for their bouts tomorrow at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The event will air via tape-delay on HDNet and features the opening round of the DREAM welterweight grand prix as well as the final bout from DREAM’s featherweight grand prix opening round.

Riki Fukuda has agreed to fight fellow middleweight Murilo “Ninja” Rua on just one days notice after his scheduled opponent, Dong Sik Yoon, was forced out of their bout due to an undisclosed injury.

DREAM today announced additional bouts for DREAM 8, which takes place on April 5th at the Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan and features the opening round of the promotion’s welterweight grand prix.

Announced today were the opening round GP matchups of Shinya Aoki vs. Hayato “Mach” Sakurai, Yuya Shirai vs. Jason High, Marius Zaromskis vs. Seichi Ikemoto, and Andre Galvao vs. John Alessio. A non-tournament bout featuring Jeff Monson and Sergey Kharitonov was also announced.

DREAm 8 airs on HDNet on April 10th at 10pm ET.

Fedor Emelianenko’s manager, Vadim Finkelstein, has announced that the top-ranked heavyweight plans on fighting two more times in 2008. The first bout will be at an October Affliction-promoted event and the second will come in December at a New Year’s Eve event in Japan.
UFC veteran Joe Jordan will take on Ryan Ford in the main event of MFC 17 on July 25th for the promotion’s middleweight title. Jordan replaces Drew Fickett, who was pulled from the bout due to breach of contract.
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson suffered no serious damage in his unanimous decision loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 86 and is set to return to the gym to resume training on Monday.
Ranked lightweight Takanori Gomi will likely face DEEP lightweight champion Pang Sung Hwan at Sengoku 4 on August 24th in Japan.
Affliction has announced that it has signed Edwin Dewees to a multi-fight contract. Filling in forÂ Vernon White, who was recently suspended due to a failed drug test, Dewees will debut against Antonio Rogerio Nogueria at Affliction “Banned” on July 19th.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has released official gate figures for The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale and UFC 86. The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale had a live gate of $495,350 and a paid attendance of 1,853. UFC 86 had a live gate of $3,350,730 and a paid attendance of 9,630. The closed circuit broadcast of UFC 86 brought in an additional $33,650.
