UFC on Versus 1 Fight Card Set for “Vera vs. Jones” on March 21

After a matchup between middleweight sluggers Alessio Sakara and James Irvin finished the main card for “UFC on Versus: Vera vs. Jones” on Tuesday, the March 21 fight card in Broomfield, Coloradio is now complete following the official addition of Duane “Bang” Ludwig vs. Darren Elkins to the event’s preliminary card.

Light heavyweights Brandon Vera and Jon Jones square off in the main event of the UFC’s Versus debut, which also includes Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga and Paul Buentello vs. Cheick Kongo.

The fight card on “UFC on Versus 1: Vera vs. Jones” is now complete following the addition of Clay Guida vs. Shannon Gugerty and Mike Pierce vs. Rob Kimmons to the event’s preliminary card on Tuesday. UFC on Versus 1 takes place on March 21 at the Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, Colorado near Denver, with its main card, headlined by Bradon Vera vs. Jon Jones, airing live on Versus.

Brandon Vera vs. Jon Jones Official for UFC on Versus on March 21 in Denver

A light heavyweight matchup between Brandon Vera and Jon Jones, first reported in December, will headline the first “UFC on Versus” event, the UFC announced during Sunday’s WEC 46 broadcast on Versus.

“UFC on Versus: Vera vs. Jones” takes place on March 21 at the Odeum Colorado (formerly the Broomfield Event Center) in Broomfield, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, and airs live on Versus beginning at 10pm ET.

Tickets for the event go on sale to the general public this Saturday, January 16, with UFC Fight Club and Newsletter presales set to begin on Thursday and Friday respectively.

Though Vera-Jones was the only bout announced on Sunday, Anthony Johnson vs. John Howard and Sean Sherk vs. Clay Guida are also expected for the card.

Brandon Vera vs. Jon Jones Likely for First UFC Event on Versus on March 21 in Denver

A light heavyweight matchup between Brandon Vera and Jon Jones, reported earlier Wednesday as the possible main event for UFC Fight Night 21 on March 31, is now expected to headline the UFC’s first event on Versus on March 21 in Denver, Colorado, according to Sherdog.

If confirmed, the card would take place 6 days before UFC 111 on March 27 in New Jersey and 10 days ahead of the Spike TV-televised UFN 21 event, which serves as the lead-in for the debut of The Ultimate Fighter 11.

Jones (9-1) began his UFC career with wins over Andre Gusmao, Stephan Bonnar, and Jake O’Brien, and nearly finished Matt Hamill with first-round ground and pound earlier this month, but was handed his first loss by disqualification after landing several illegal elbows, though “Bones” is appealing the result.

Vera (11-4) rebounded from a 1-3 stretch by winning back-to-back fights over Mike Patt and Krzysztof Soszynski in 2009, but suffered a unanimous decision loss to Randy Couture in November at UFC 105.

Brandon Vera vs. Jon Jones Possible To Headline UFN 21

After an injury forced Antonio Rogerio Nogueira out of a planned UFC 109 bout with Brandon Vera, rather than book a new opponent for that night for Vera, the UFC appears to have gone in a different direction. They are instead targeting a match up pitting Vera against Jon Jones in a likely headlining fight at the yet unannounced Ultimate Fight Night 21, according to a message posted on Vera’s Twitter, which has since been deleted due to the fact that the UFC has not officially announced the contest.

UFN 21 is expected to take place on March 31 and serve as the lead in to season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter featuring coaches Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell.

Vera was last in action in a close, and somewhat controversial loss to Randy Couture at UFC 105 in November. Prior to the loss to Couture, Vera had won back to back fights defeating Mike Patt via TKO at UFC 96, and decisioning Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 102 in August.

Jones was last in action at the finale of season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter where he put on a dominating performance against Matt Hamill, only to be disqualified after the bout was halted following illegal elbows from Jones, a decision Jones has appealed. Prior to the loss to Hamill Jones had been undefeated in his MMA career, including UFC wins over Andre Gusmao, Stephan Bonnar, and Jake O’Brien.

TUF 10 Finale Fighter Salaries: Edgar, Hamill Top Payroll; Slice Earns $25,000

Main card winners Frankie Edgar and Matt Hamill were the top earners for Saturday’s The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, according to official figures released Monday by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, each earning $46,000 to lead the $351,000 payroll for the Spike TV-televised event, which was held at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas.

Kimbo Slice, a street fighter-turned-mixed martial artist and former EliteXC headliner, officially received $25,000 for his UFC debut, a unanimous decision win over Houston Alexander, who took home $13,000 for the loss.

The Ultimate Fighter 10 winner Roy Nelson earned $16,000 for his first-round knockout of Brendan Schaub in card’s main event, the same salary received by all of the TUF 10 cast members excluding Slice.

The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale drew 1,400 spectators for a $504,350 live gate.

The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale Results: Roy Nelson Wins TUF 10 With KO of Brendan Schaub, Kimbo Slice Tops Houston Alexander

Roy Nelson won The Ultimate Fighter 10 heavyweight tournament on Saturday by knocking out fellow finalist Brendan Schaub in the opening round at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, which took place at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas and aired live on Spike TV.

Nelson, a former IFL champion and favorite to win the heavyweight tournament, rebounded from back-to-back losses with the win, which improved his record to 14-4, while Schaub, a training partner of heavyweight contender Shane Carwin, falls to 4-1 after suffering his first career loss.

In the event’s co-headliner, Jon Jones bloodied Matt Hamill with vicious ground and pound that nearly ended the bout, but finished the fight with illegal downward elbows that caused him to be disqualified, awarding an injured and battered Hamill the victory.

Kimbo Slice made his anticipated UFC debut in lackluster fashion on Saturday, scoring a unanimous decision over a returning Houston Alexander in a bizarre bout that featured Slice’s improved ground game, including an impressive suplex in the opening frame, rather than an expected knockout.

Also on the main card, Frankie Edgar submitted newcomer Matt Veach with a rear naked choke in the second round, while Matt Mitrione knocked out fellow former NFL player Marcus Jones 10-seconds into round two.

James McSweeney, Jon Madsen, Brian Stann, John Howard, and Mark Bocek were all victorious on The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale preliminary card.
