Rising welterweight Paul Daley's next bout is likely to come against top 170-pound contenders Jon Fitch or Josh Koscheck, but the British slugger also has his sights set on a matchup with recent welterweight challenger Thiago Alves.

With Fitch scheduled to rematch Alves in March, a matchup with Koscheck is most-likely on tap for Daley once Koscheck heals from an undisclosed injury that recently forced him to withdraw from a February rematch with Paulo Thiago.

Rising welterweight Paul Daley’s next bout is likely to come against top 170-pound contenders Jon Fitch or Josh Koscheck, but the British slugger also has his sights set on a matchup with recent welterweight challenger Thiago Alves.

Daley continued his climb up the division’s ladder on Saturday with a first-round knockout of Dustin Hazelett, his fourth-straight victory overall and second-straight in the UFC following a September knockout of Martin Kampmann.

“The big problem in this division right now is the two best guys out there are probably Koscheck and Fitch, and trying to get them to fight each other is a nightmare. I’d really like to see that fight,” said UFC President Dana White at Saturday’s post-UFC 108 press conference. “We’ll put Daley against one of them and see what happens.”

“Fitch would be great or Koscheck,” said Daley. “There’s (also) an Alves fight. I’ve been fighting and knocking guys out standing up, but I really haven’t displayed my full array of standup skills. I think a fight with Alves would be entertaining for the fans.”

With Fitch scheduled to rematch Alves in March, a matchup with Koscheck is most-likely on tap for Daley once Koscheck heals from an undisclosed injury that recently forced him to withdraw from a February rematch with Paulo Thiago.

In their first meeting at UFC Fight Night 5 in mid-2006, Fitch earned a second-round TKO of Alves.

Fitch (19-3) reeled off eight-straight wins to begin his UFC career, but had his 15-fight win streak snapped with a unanimous decision loss to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre last August. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter has bounced back in 2009 with three-straight wins over Akihiro Gono, Paulo Thiago, and most-recently Mike Pierce earlier this month.

Alves (16-6), previously targeted for a UFC 111 matchup with Ricardo Almeida, won seven-straight over the likes of Chris Lytle, Josh Koscheck, and Matt Hughes following his loss to Fitch, but is coming off a unanimous decision loss to St-Pierre in July at UFC 100.

UFC 111 is headlined by welterweight title-holder Georges St-Pierre vs. Dan Hardy and is also expected to feature an interim heavyweight title fight between Shane Carwin and Frank Mir.

Fitch (19-3), previously set to fight Ricardo Almeida at UFC 106 and rematch Thiago Alves at UFC 107 before injuries scratched both fights, reeled off a record eight-straight wins to begin his UFC career, Fitch had his 15-fight win streak snapped with a unanimous decision loss to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre last August. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter has bounced back in 2009 with back-to-back wins over Akihiro Gono and Paulo Thiago.

Pierce (9-1), originally scheduled to fight Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night 20 in January before Koscheck was tapped as a late-addition to UFC 106, will be aiming for his seventh-straight win after upsetting Brock Larson in September in his UFC debut.

Alves recently suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament and will be out 3-4 weeks, likely returning to action in January or February.

Though Alves had sought to simply postpone the rematch until he was healed, the UFC will instead look for a replacement to fight Fitch at UFC 107, with Ariel Helwani telling MMAFrenzy.com that the promotion felt it wasn’t fair to make him wait further after he was bumped from UFC 106 last week.

UFC 107 is headlined by BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez and also features Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida, Cheick Kongo vs. Frank Mir, and Paul Buentello vs. Todd Duffee.
