K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 Final Bracket Set

The bracket for K-1’s World Grand Prix 2009 Final, which takes place on December 5 in Kanagawa, Japan, was set on Sunday in Seoul, with the tournament’s eight fighters choosing their opponents after each winning on Saturday at the K-1 World GP 2009 Final 16.

Badr Hari takes on Ruslan Karaev and Ewerton Texeira meets Alistair Overeem in side A of the tournament, while Jerome LeBanner fights Semmy Schilt and Remy Bonjasky squares off against Errol Zimmerman on side B.

The 17th inaugural K-1 World GP Finale, a one-night, eight-fighter tournament, will crown the latest K-1 World Grand Prix champion after a year full of elimination matchups.

Tim Sylvia vs. Jerome LeBanner Under Consideration For Affliction 3

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia may take on K-1 kickboxing standout Jerome LeBanner at Affliction’s third event, which is likely to take place in January or February 2009.

Affliction Vice President Tom Attencio confirmed the possible matchup to MMA News on Wednesday.

“In terms of fighters we are looking at Jerome LeBanner,” said Attencio on Sylvia’s next bout, “he is interested in doing MMA and apparently him and Tim Sylvia have some history between them so that is something that we are looking at right now.”

Sylvia (26-6) has lost back-to-back fights to Antonio Rodrigo Nogeira via third-round submission at UFC 81 in February and Fedor Emelianenko via first-round submission at Affliction’s first event, Banned, in July.

LeBanner (3-1-1) has posted three-straight mixed martial arts victories but has not competed since a March 2006 knockout of Jimmy Ambriz. In kickboxing LeBanner has dropped back-to-back contests to Semmy Schilt, including a late-June decision loss. He holds a 73-15 kickboxing record.

“Cro Cop” To Face LeBanner At DREAM 4

Mirko â€œCro Copâ€ Filipovic will face off against highly accomplished kickboxer Jerome LeBanner at DREAM 4, according to Cro Copâ€™s blog at mma-id.com.

“Cro Cop” (23-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC) was a PrideFC standout who holds victories over Josh Barnett, Wanderlei Silva, Kevin Randleman, Aleksander Emelianenko and Mark Coleman. After competing for years in PRIDE, Filipovic was acquired by the UFC in late-2006. Poised to become the next contender for the heavyweight championship, Cro Cop disappointed fans and management suffering back to back losses inside the octagon, one of which was a highlight reel knockout by Gabriel Gonzaga.

Since being shipped off to Japan after his poor UFC performances, Filipovic defeated Tatsuya Mizuno at DREAM 1 this past March. Mirko has previously stated that his stint in Japan is only temporary, and that he will return to the UFC in time.

Jerome LeBanner is an extremely aggressive striker who amasses an impressive 73-14 kickboxing record. In kickboxing, LeBanner holds notable wins over Mike Bernardo, Ernesto Hoost, Maurice Smith, Sam Greco, Peter Aerts, Mark Hunt, Don Frye, Gary Goodridge, Remy Bonjasky and Hong Man Choi. LeBanner actually lost via decision to a then-unknown Mirko Cro Cop in 1996, in a bout which was the Croatianâ€™s professional debut. LeBanner began competing in mixed martial arts in 2001, and has since put up a 3-1-1 MMA record. LeBanner fought to a draw against Bob Sapp at K-1 Premium Dynamite in 2004.
