Dave Herman needed just 60-seconds to stop Don Frye on Saturday in the main event of Shark Fights 6, forcing a referee stoppage at the one-minute mark of the headliner. Gerald Harris, a cast member on the Ultimate Fighter 7, knocked out former WEC and UFC fighter Nissen Osterneck in the co-main event to with the promotion’s middleweight title.

Paulo Filho looked unimpressive in picking up a decision win over Alex Schoenauer on the card, while Pedro Rizzo bested Jeff Monson and Murilo “Ninja” Rua stopped Alex Stiebling in other notable action.

The Western Canada based Maximum Fighting Championship recently sent out a press release confirming its matches for the upcoming MFC 22: Payoff event on October 2nd just outside Edmonton, Alberta. The event will be televised live on HDNet Fights. Included on the card are several UFC castoffs, as well as a batch of MFC staples. The headlining bout will be match up between two top grapplers, as Jason MacDonald will look to topple Travis Lutter. Also on the card, Antonio McKee will take on Carlo Prater for the MFC lightweight belt, and Luigi Fioravanti will face John Alessio.

The Spokane, Washington based Arena Rumble will hold its debut event this Saturday, September 12th at the Spokane arena. To kick things off they have enlisted the services of a few TUF alums, and a few recent UFC castoffs, as well as some up and coming fighters. Headlining the event is a match up between Jason Guida (known for not making weight on “The Ultimate Fighter 8″) and Jeremy Horn, a veteran of over one hundred fights. Other notables in action on the card include former UFC fighters Trevor Prangley, Brad Imes, and Terry Martin, as well as undefeated Strikeforce prospect Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm, who has yet to have a fight go the distance.

The event is slated to feature 15 professional bouts, with no broadcast plans, according to MMAJunkie. The main card for Arena Rumble is:

UFC veterans Rich Clementi and Jeremy Horn both picked up first-round submission victories on the Adrenaline III undercard.

Sylvia weighed 263 pounds for his most-recent bout at Affliction: Banned last July, adding nearly 50 pounds to his 6-foot 8-inch frame over the past 11 months. He’ll need to shed the additional weigh in just under two months to reach the 265-pound heavyweight limit for his Affliction: Trilogy matchup with Paul Buentello.

Sylvia and Mercer were originally scheduled for a boxing match in New Jersey, before the state declined to approve the contest, forcing it to be moved to Alabama where it was changed on Thursday to MMA rules after the boxing bout was deemed illegal.

Notables Jeremy Horn (204.8) and Rich Clementi (170.2), both UFC veterans, were on weight for their respective matchups.

Details on the switch from Sherdog:

Association of Boxing Commissions President Tim Lueckenhoff told Sherdog.com that neither he nor the ABC organization had been approached directly to regulate the bout. Further, Lueckenhoff said he’d thought Sylvia-Mercer would be an MMA contest and not a boxing bout. Lueckenhoff said federal law currently has no jurisdiction over MMA bouts, but laws are in place over boxing under the Professional Boxing Safety Act.

In a press release issued by the ABC on Thursday, the organization denounced the “unwarranted and illegal” boxing match. The release also noted that the River Cree commission, as well as referee John McCarthy, had withdrawn their involvement from the bout and event.

“Canadian boxing commissions are not authorized to supervise boxing matches in the U.S.; and, patently, it is wholly inappropriate for one representative from a Canadian boxing commission, together with an MMA referee, to supervise a boxing match,” said Bruce C. Spizler, chairman of the ABC legal committee in the release.

“Everyone thinks I came to Alabama because it’s unsanctioned here,” said Cox, “but why would I go to so much trouble to try and get this event regulated if that were the case?”

The last-minute rules switch is just the latest snag for the fight, which was originally to take place on May 30th in Atlantic City, New Jersey before the state’s athletic commission declined to regulate the contest. It was then moved to Alabama, which lacks a commission to sanction the bout, where it was scheduled to take place under boxing rules in an MMA cage before being forced to take place under MMA rules just two days before the fight.

UFC veterans Rich Clementi and Jeremy Horn will also be in action on the card.

Dan Henderson Defeats Rich Franklin at UFC 93

UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson took place today at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland. In the evening’s main event Dan Henderson topped Rich Franklin, earning a split decision victory to secure his spot as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter 9 and a future middleweight matchup against opposing coach Michael Bisping. One judge scored the contest 30-27 in favor of Franklin, while the victory went to Henderson, who was awarded two 29-28 scores.

In the evening’s co-main event, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua scored his much-needed first UFC victory with a late third-round TKO of UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman. The 44-year-old Coleman was visibly exhausted midway though the opening round but Rua was largely unable to capitalize. Coleman survived the opening round and continued to get Rua to the canvas over the remainder of the fight. The fight appeared destined to go to the judges’ scorecards, where Rua was likely to be awarded the victory, but a botched call by the referee allowed Rua to connect with a combo that sent Coleman to the canvas. Coleman protested the stoppage and has his sights set on a rubber match with his rival, though Rua will first fight Chuck Liddell before the two could meet again.

Both fights were not without controversy as Henderson’s victory was marred by an accidental headbutt and eye poke, while a legal knee by Rua was ruled illegal and resulted in a standup that immediately preceded the knockout of Coleman.

Despite a broken hand suffered in the opening round, Rousimar Palhares took Jeremy Horn the distance to earn a unaniomous decision victory. Horn showed heart in the loss, surviving what was shaping up to be an early stoppage to force Palhares to work hard for the victory, which improved his record to 2-1 in the UFC and 9-2 overall.

In a featured middleweight matchup, Alan Belcher snubbed Denis Kang’s UFC debut, submitting the promising middleweight with an arm-in guillotine late in the second round to improve his UFC record to 5-3. The submission came out of nowhere as Kang dominated with first two rounds with superior ground work before Belcher transitioned a stuffed takedown attempt into a fight-ending submission.

The highly anticipated scrap between Marcus Davis and Chris Lytle kicked off the UFC 93 broadcast with back-and-forth standup action as expected, but the solid effort failed to live up it’s extreme hype. In the end, Davis walked away with the split decision victory.

The UFC today announced additional bouts for UFC 93 on January 17th in Dublin, Ireland and UFC 94 on January 31st in Las Vegas.

Announced for the UFC 93 main card, which is headlined by Dan Henderson vs. Rich Franklin and Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, were Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang, Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle, and Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares. Antonio Mendes vs. Andre Gusmao, Tomasz Drwal vs. Ivan Serati, Tom Egan vs. John Hathaway, and Dennis Siver vs. Nate Mohr were confirmed for the unaired preliminary card.

A superfight between UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn is joined on the main card by Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva and Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones. Manny Gamburyan vs. Thiago Tavares, Jake O’Brien vs. Christian Wellisch, and Matt Arroyo vs. Dan Cramer are officially slated for the preliminary card.

UFC veteran Ryan Jensen has been tapped to replace Horn in the September 17th matchup in Omaha, Nebraska.

MMA Junkie reported the injury and replacement on Wednesday.

In his two previous UFC bouts Jensen was submitted in the opening round by Thales Leites at UFC 74 and Demian Maia at UFC 77. Following a knockout loss to Joey Villasenor at Strikeforce “Shamrock vs. Le”, his third loss in a row, Jensen bounced back with back-to-back first-round victories over Mitch Whitesel at SportFight 23 and Aaron Praschak at Victory Fighting Championships 24 in late-July.

Following an Ultimate Fighter 3 finale loss to Keith Jardine Gouveia posted four-straight wins inside the octagon over Wes Combs, Seth Petruzelli, Carmelo Marrero, and Jason Lambert. In his most-recent bout, however, Gouveia was defeated by Goran Reljic via second-round TKO at UFC 84 in May.

UFC Fight Night 15 “Diaz vs. Neer” takes place on September 17th at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska and will air on Spike TV.

Horn (88-15-5) is one of the sport’s most active fighters, having fought in more than 100 bouts over his MMA career, which spans back to 1996, but has lost three-striaight bouts and four of his last five. “Gumby” was defeated by Nate Marquardt via second-round guillotine at UFC 81 in February and was submitted by Dean Lister in his most recent bout at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale in June.

Gouveia (10-5), a member of American Top Team, had won four-straight bouts inside the octagon before losing to Goran Reljic at UFC 84 in May.

Nate Diaz vs. Josh Neer, Clay Guida vs. Mac Danzig, Houston Alexander vs. Eric Schafer, Ed Herman vs. Alan Belcher, and Joe Lauzon vs. Kyle Bradley are also slated for the main card.
