Strikeforce Weigh-In Results: Carano and “Cyborg” On Weight

“Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg” headliners Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, who meet for the newly-created Strikeforce 145-pound Women’s Championship in Saturday’s Showtime-televised main event, successfully made weight for the matchup at Friday’s official weigh-ins in San Jose, California.

The rest of the 18-fighter card also successfully made weight with the exception of Jesse Taylor, who weighed in one pound over the welterweight limit for his main card bout against Jay Hieron.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Kyle Promoted to “Carano vs. Cyborg” Main Card

A heavyweight matchup between Fabricio Werdum and Mike Kyle slated for Saturday’s Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg preliminary card has been promoted to the Showtime-televised portion of the event.

In addition to Werdum-Kyle, Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, Gilbert Melendez vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida, Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi, and Jay Hieron vs. Jesse Taylor are also set for tomorrow’s main card.

Fedor Emelianenko’s recently-announced deal with Strikeforce is an exclusive contract for three fights over one year, according to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, who discussed a variety of Strikeforce topics yesterday on TapouT Radio and the Carmichael Dave Show.

Coker said Strikeforce is planing a Thursday press conference to announce details on Fedor’s debut, and also announced that Jake Shields will be fighting for an interim middleweight title in October and that Strikeforce had formed a “alliance” with DREAM.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Kyle Booked For August 15 Strikeforce

An opponent has been found for heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum as he’ll take on Mike Kyle at Strikeforce’s August 15 event in San Jose, California.

Werdum (11-4-1) was a heavyweight contender in the UFC following back-to-back wins, but was cut after an October loss to Junior dos Santos, while Kyle (12-6-1) upset Rafael Cavalcante in his most-recent fight in June.

Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers Won’t Fight Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction: Trilogy

Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers, Strikeforce heavyweight contenders mentioned as possible replacements for Josh Barnett, will not be fighting Fedor Emelianenko on August 1 at Affliction: Trilogy.

“It’s safe to say neither Fabricio or Brett will be fighting on Aug. 1,” Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz told MMAjunkie. “The plan is still for Fabricio to fight on Aug. 15, and we hope to have an opponent named soon. As for Brett, nothing is finalized, but he won’t be fighting on Aug. 1.”

Alistair Overeem Withdraws From August 15 Strikeforce Title Defense With Lingering Hand Injury

Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem has withdrawn from his scheduled August 15 title defense against Fabricio Werdum as his hand has still not healed from an injury suffered in a May altercation at an Amsterdam nightclub.

Fanhouse was first to report the withdrawal on Tuesday, adding that Overeem will remain on the card against a different opponent, with it yet to be decided whether an interim title will be on the line for the new matchup.

Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum Strikeforce Heavyweight Title Fight Confirmed for August 15

Strikeforce today announced that the promotion’s heavyweight title-holder Alistair Overeem will defend his title against Fabricio Werdum at its August 15 “Carano vs. Cyborg” event in San Jose, California.

The long-rumored matchup is the third championship bout on the Showtime-televised card, joining Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, who meet for the newly-created Strikeforce 145-pound Women’s Championship, as well as a lightweight title unification and rematch between Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez. Nick Diaz vs. Joe Riggs is also expected to be featured on the event’s main card.
