Maia (11-1) won five-straight bouts to begin his UFC career, including wins over Jason MacDonald, Nate Quarry, and Chael Sonnen, pushing his undefeated record to 11-0, but suffered a first-round knockout to fellow 185-pound contender Nate Marquart in August at UFC 102.

Miller (11-2), the former IFL middleweight champ, is also coming off a loss in his most-recent fight, dropping a unanimous decision to Chael Sonnen in May. He had previously won three-straight UFC bouts over Rob Kimmons, Matt Horwich, and Jake Rosholt.

The yet-unannounced UFC 109 card is expected to feature Matt Hughes, as well as a possible matchup between Matt Serra and Frank Trigg.

According to MMA Madness, which first reported the injury on Tuesday, newcomer Jay Silva has agreed to replace Miller and make his Octagon debut against Dollaway on less than two-weeks notice.

Silva (5-0) remained undefeated in August with a third-round knockout of Ray Lizama at a “Call to Arms” event. He has never gone the distance, scoring four knockouts and one submission in his five professional fights.

Dollaway (8-2), the runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter 7 who lost to Amir Sadollah at the June 2008 finale, bounced back with wins over Jesse Taylor and Mike Massenzio before losing to Tom Lawlor in July at UFC 100.

Silva-Dollaway is slated for the preliminary card of the Spike TV-televised event, which is co-headlined by Nate Diaz vs. Melvin Guillard and Gray Maynard vs. Roger Huerta.

The matchups were both reported by MMA Madness on Monday.

Simpson (5-0, 1-0 UFC), a teammate of Dollaway’s at Arizona Combat Systems, made his WEC debut late last year with an 18-second knockout of David Avellan, then jumped to the UFC, where he defeated Tim McKenzie via first-round TKO in his April debut. Herman (15-7, 4-4 UFC) suffered losses to Demian Maia and Alan Belcher in 2008, but rebounded with a unanimous decision victory over David Loiseau in April.

The former IFL middleweight champ Miller (11-2) won three-straight bouts over Rob Kimmons, Matt Horwich, and Jake Rosholt to begin his UFC career, extending his unbeaten streak to ten-straight, but suffered a unanimous decision loss to Chael Sonnen at UFC 98 in May, his first loss in over three years. After losing to Amir Sadollah in The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale, Dollaway won back-to-back fights over Jesse Taylor and Mike Massenzio before losing to Tom Lawlor in July at UFC 100.

Middleweight Wilson Gouveia (pictured) has withdrawn from his UFC 102 matchup against Ed Herman after suffering a back injury that will sideline him until at least October.

MMA News first reported the injury on Friday just days after Herman was tapped to replace an injured James Irvin and take on Gouveia at the August 29 event in Portland.

Though the UFC could keep Herman and the card and seek a replacement for the 185-pound fight, the promotion is expected to scratch the bout entirely and instead add Herman to one of its other upcoming cards against an opponent to-be-determined.

Prior to accepting the fight against Gouveia, Herman had been set to fight Aaron Simpson on September 16 at UFC Fight Night 19 in Oklahoma City, but it was reported earlier Friday that Simpson would instead fight Dan Miller at the Spike-televised event. Whether that fight will be altered following Gouviea’s injury is not yet known.

Lyoto Machida became the new UFC light heavyweight champion on Saturday in Las Vegas, taking out title-holder Rashad Evans with a flurry of punches in the second round of their UFC 98 headliner to capture the 205-pound belt.

Evans offered little offense in the bout, while Machida controlled the fight throughout, using his famous (or perhaps infamous) unorthodox style to score a knockdown late in the first round before eventually connecting with a barrage of punches midway through the second that first staggered Evans before ultimately collapsing him cold to the canvas.

Evans falls to 18-1-1 with the first loss of his career, while Machida remains undefeated, upping his perfect record to 15-0.

In the UFC 98 co-main event Matt Hughes picked up a controversial unanimous decision victory over Matt Serra in the highly-anticipated bout between the welterweight rivals.

Hughes survived an early onslaught by Serra in the opening frame to take both the second and third rounds en route to the decision victory. Despite the judge’s views on the bout, most spectators scored the third frame in favor of Serra following a surprising takedown and outburst of offense in the closing minute. Even Hughes was apparently swayed in favor of Serra, raising his opponent’s arm following the conclusion of the contest. However, when the only scores that matter were handed down the judges awarded the close, albeit controversial decision to Hughes with 29-28 scores across the board.

The future hall of famer Hughes improves to 43-7 on his career after bouncing back from back-to-back defeats, while Serra goes to 9-6 following two-straight losses.

Drew McFedries rebounded from back-to-back losses with a 37-second knockout of Xaview Foupa-Pokam that could send “Professor X” packing from the UFC, while Chael Connen topped Dan Miller and Frankie Edgar scored a unanimous decision over Sean Sherk in other main card bouts.

Brock Larson, Tim Hague, Kyle Bradley, Krzysztof Soszynski, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, and George Roop were victorious on the evening’s preliminary card.

The official results for UFC 98 were:

Lyoto Machida def. Rashad Evans (c) via KO (punches) — Round 2, 3:57
UFC Light Heavyweight Championship

Matt Hughes def. Matt Serra via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Drew McFedries def. Xavier Foupa-Pokam via TKO (strikes) — Round 1, 0:37

Chael Sonnen def. Dan Miller via unanimous decision(30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Frankie Edgar def. Sean Sherk via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Brock Larson def. Mike Pyle via submission (arm-triangle choke) — Round 1, 3:06
