In a clash of former champions, Rich Franklin defeated Wanderlei Silva via unanimous decision on Saturday in Cologne, Germany in the main event of UFC 99: The Comeback.

Silva connected with heavy punches throughout the 195-pound catchweight contest, but Franklin countered with frequent kicks and punches of his own. Both fighters were hurt on multiple occasions during the three-round, 15-minute bout, but the frequency of Franklin’s strikes were enough to earn him the unanimous decision victory.

As was the case with all of the card’s unanimous decisions, the official judge’s scores weren’t announced, but the fight appeared to be closer than the unanimous scores indicated (MMAFrenzy.com scored the bout 29-28 Franklin).

With the win, the former UFC middleweight champion Franklin, who now competes at light heavyweight, improves to 25-4, while Silva, a former PRIDE light heavyweight title-holder who is moving down to middleweight, falls to 32-10-1 following the loss.

In a battle of heavyweight contenders, Cain Velasquez used his superior wrestling to dominate Cheick Kongo en route to a unanimous decision victory in the UFC 99 co-headliner. Velasquez, now 6-0 in his young career with four-straight UFC victories, should meet another contender in the 265-pound division in his next bout with fellow wrestling prospect Shane Carwin among his potential opponents. Kongo, meanwhile, must improve his ground game if he’s to climb back up the heavyweight ladder towards a title shot, as Velasquez easily secured mount and rained down ground and pound throughout the bout.

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic successfully made his return to the Octagon at UFC 99, dispatching of Mostapha Al-Turk with punches midway through the opening round of their heavyweight fight. An accidental eye gouge that set up Cro Cop’s finishing flurry was the only blemish on the bout, but appeared to have little affect on the result as Al-Turk had been staggered with punches moments earlier. Unbeaten in his last four fights, Cro Cop improves to 25-6-2, while Al-Turk falls to 6-5, including an 0-2 mark in the UFC, and should soon find himself released by the promotion.

Mike Swick stopped Ben Saunders with punches in the second round of their welterweight contest on Saturday at the Lanxess Arena, lining himself up for a fight against a 170-pound contender, with the loser of July’s matchup between current champion Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves, Martin Kampmann, or Carlos Condit among the possibilities. Swick is now 14-2 on his career with wins in 9 of 10 UFC bouts, while Saunders drops to 7-1 with the first loss of his career.

In other main card action, Spencer Fisher spoiled Caol Uno’s UFC return with a unanimous decision victory and Dan Hardy won the biggest fight of his career by outpointing Marcus Davis via unanimous decision in the pay-per-view opener.

The event’s official results were:

Rich Franklin def. Wanderlei Silva via unanimous decision

Cain Velasquez def. Cheick Kongo via unanimous decision

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic def. Mostapha Al-Turk via TKO (strikes) — Round 1, 3:06

Mike Swick def. Ben Saunders via TKO (strikes) — Round 2, 3:47

Spencer Fisher def. Caol Uno via unanimous decision

Dan Hardy def. Marcus Davis via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Terry Etim def. Justin Buchholz via submission (D’Arce choke) — Round 2

Denis Siver def. Dale Hartt via submission (rear naked choke) — Round 1

Paul Taylor def. Peter Sobotta via unanimous decision

Paul Kelly def. Roli Delgado via unanimous decision

Stefan Struve def. Denis Stojnic via submission (rear naked choke) — Round 2, 2:37

John Hathaway def. Rick Story via unanimous decision

BOUT RECAPS

JOSH KOSCHECK DEF. YOSHIYUKI YOSHIDA

Yoshida works leg kicks early then Koscheck fires back with punches that bloodies Yoshida. Koscheck rocks Yoshida with a right then puts him away with another right that drops him to the canvas.

MIKE SWICK DEF. JONATHAN GOULET

Swick drops Goulet in the opening moments with a big right and finishes him off with strikes in just 33-seconds.

STEVE CANTWELL DEF. RAZAK AL-HASSAN

Al-Hassan is agressive early and presses toward Cantwell with strikes but the former WEC champion avoids major damage then counters with striking of his own before taking his opponent to the canvas. Cantwell first moves to side control then to mount before securing a grusome armbar that Al-Hassan refuses to submit to but referee Mario Yamasaki has seen enough and halts the contest in favor of Cantwell.

TIM CREDEUR DEF. NATE LOUGHRAN

Credeur picks Loughran apart with strikes for the entirety of the opening frame then splits the second round beating him up on the feet and on the ground. Credeur closes the second with a barrage of punches and Lougran verbally submits between rounds, giving Credeur the TKO victory.

JIM MILLER DEF. MATT WIMAN

Despite accepting a bout against Matt Wiman on short notice, Jim Miller was able to keep up a frantic pace over three full rounds, wearing Wiman out on the feet and on the ground. Miller nearly submitted Wiman with a deep guillotine in the opening round and blasted Wiman with punches throughout the fight but Wiman survived to the closing bell, losing to Miller on the judges cards with scores of 30-27, 30-26, and 30-27.

LUIGI FIORAVANTI DEF. BRODIE FARBER

Fioravanti controls the fight from start to finish, dominating Farber on the ground while staying out of trouble for three full rounds to earn unanimous scores of 30-27 on the judges’ scorecards.

STEVE BRUNO DEF. JOHNNY REES

After a close opening round, Bruno gets several takedowns in the second then eventually takes Rees’ back in a scramble and locks on a rear naked choke that forces him to tap out at the 3:44 mark of the second round.

BEN SAUNDERS DEF. BRANDON WOLFF

After trading with Wolff to open the fight, Saunders accidentally catches him with a low blow. The action resumes and Saunders takes control, battering Wollf with kicks and knees before a series of strikes forces the referee to intervene at the 1:49 mark of the first.

DALE HARTT DEF. COREY HILL

Hill takes the first round with multiple takedowns and effective use of his reach advantage, but early in the second round a Hartt leg kick breaks Hill’s leg and the fight is immediately halted. Hill has to be taken out of the octagon on a stretcher but Harrt remains at his side ensuring Hill is alright. The injury is said to be the “worst in UFC history”.

JUSTIN MCCULLY DEF. EDDIE SANCHEZ

After a close first round that saw McCully and Sanchez exchange on their feet before Sanchez claimed side control on the ground and worked elbows, McCully took control of the final two rounds with superior standup to earn the unanimous decision win with scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.

The eleven-bout event took place on Saturday, July 19th, at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I’m a Muay Thai fighter. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid,” said Silva after the fight. “I didn’t come up to the 205-pound division to disrespect any fighters, but if you stand up and exchange Muay Thai, this is what happens.”

Silva connected first in the fight with a low kick then dodged a head kick by Irvin. After landing several more punches Silva caught an Irvin leg kick and landed a straight right that sent Irvin to the canvas. Silva followed his opponent to the ground and pounded away, eventually landing a pair of punches flush on Irvin’s chin to finish off the contest.

“This was my first time coming up here and it was a good experience,” added Silva. “But my responsibility is to defend the 185-pound title.”

Though Brandon Vera emerged victorious in the co-main event of the evening, he failed to impress with his unanimous decision victory against outmatched IFL veteran Reese Andy. With both height and reach advantages Vera was able to handle Andy in the clinch and win the majority of the striking. Andy was persistent and peppered Vera with shots and takedown attempts but it wasn’t enough to win the bout.

The cut down from heavyweight to light heavyweight was at least partly to blame for Vera’s performance on Saturday.

“The 205 cut was tougher than I thought,” said Vera. “I didn’t think it affected me until me and Reese walked up and I was like ‘Woo, I’m tired’.”

In the “Fight of the Night”, Frank Edgar rebounded from his first career loss in April to defeat fellow-lightweight contender Hermes Franca via unanimous decision. Though the contest failed to feature much standup Edgar, a collegiate wrestler, and Franca, a submission specialist, tussled for position on the ground. Edgar worked ground and pound from the top while Franca looked for submissions from the bottom. Though Franca nearly ended the fight with a tight armbar in the opening round, Edgar’s ability to take Franca to the ground and keep him there while peppering him with punches and elbows from the top was enough to claim the unanimous decision victory.

Cain Velasquez proved his first win, a first-round TKO of Brad Morris in April, was no fluke with a first-round TKO victory over fellow heavyweight up-and-comer Jake O’Brien. After briefly exchanging on their feet O’Brien looked for the takedown but it was Velasquez who claimed the dominant position, pinning O’Brien to the ground in crucifix control. Despite his best efforts, O’Brien was unable to escape from the bottom and Velasquez threw punch after punch until the referee eventually stepped in to halt the fight at 2:02 of the first.

In the most controversial bout of the evening, Kevin Burns posted his second victory inside the octagon with an accidental eye poke TKO of knockout artist Anthony Johnson. After two close rounds of back-and-forth action both on their feet and on the ground, Burns threw an open jab the deeply poked Johnson in his right eye. Johnson screamed and fell to the mat in pain then covered up as the bout was not immediately halted. With no referee intervention Burns followed up and jumped on Johnson to throw more strikes but the referee stepped in and waived off the bout before any more serious damage was done. Johnson explained to the referee that he was gouged in the eye but the referee had already waived off the contest and the controversial win was awarded to Burns.

Despite an illegal knee in the opening bout of the main card, “The Ultimate Fighter 7″ runner-up CB Dollaway submitted fellow cast member Jesse Taylor via Peruvian necktie at the 3:58 mark of the first round to earn “Submission of the Night” honors.

“Knockout of the Night” went to IFL veteran Rory Markham, who overcame several hard combinations to knock Brodie Farber out cold early in the first round.

In a bout originally scheduled for The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale, cast members Tim Credeur and Cale Yarbrough went head-to-head at UFN 14 and Credeur emerged victorious with a first-round TKO.

Despite securing an early takedown Johnny Rees was submitted by Nate Loughran via triangle choke late in the opening round.

Brad Blackburn topped James Giboo with a technical knockout midway through the second round of their preliminary bout.

In the event’s opening contest Dale Hartt submitted Shannon Gugerty via rear naked choke midway through the first round.
