“Yes. I’m ready. I think I’ve been ready for a while. The way this sport works is you’ve just got to prove yourself when you get the chance. I want to fight the best so I can be the best.

I don’t know what I do better but I do know I’d be ready. I know what I can do, I know I train with really tough guys, and I know I’d prepare myself to give him a really good fight — I think it would be a really good fight between us.

I think I’d have to wear him out for the first two or three rounds, because he’s so big and strong. I’d need to be weary of him at the beginning. I think that’d be my best option, trying to do that. He’s a great athlete, and he has wrestled in the NCAAs, and you have to be a top athlete to do that, but I think that would be my best bet.”

After improving to 8-0 with a first-round knockout of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on Saturday in the UFC 110 main event, Cain Velasquez appears ready for a title shot, but awaits the result of a March 27 interim title bout between fellow contenders Frank Mir and Shane Carwin at UFC 111 to find out who will get the call to face the returning champ Brock Lesnar.

If the Mir-Carwin winner emerges healthy, they’re expected to draw Lesnar first, while Velasquez will be forced to wait patiently to fight the winner or, more-likely, take on another contender in the meantime, possibly slugger Junior dos Santos should he win his March 21 matchup against Gabriel Gonzaga at “UFC on Versus: Vera vs. Jones“.

However, should the Mir-Carwin winner be sidelined, Velasquez, the winner of six-straight UFC fights including five knockouts, is expected to face Lesnar, possibly as early as July at UFC 116.

George Sotiropoulos, Joe Stevenson, Cain Velasquez, and Chris Lytle each earned $50,000 fight-night bonuses for their showings on Saturday at “UFC 110: Nogueira vs. Velasquez”.

Sotiropoulos, a rising lightweight and Australian native, upset the former lightweight challenger Stevenson in a technical battle contested primarily on the canvas. Though Sotiropouslos outmatched Stevenson en route to a unanimous decision, the exciting bout earned the pair “Fight of the Night” honors.

Velasquez scored “Knockout of the Night” by dominating former UFC and PRIDE champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, before knocking him down halfway through the opening round and finishing him with punches on the ground.

Lytle earned “Submission of the Night” by default after securing the only sub on the card, but was still deserving of the honor, as his swift kneebar on the UFC 110 preliminary card left Brian Foster writhing in pain with a damaged knee.

Heavyweight contender Cain Velasquez passed the toughest test of his young career with ease on Saturday in the main event of UFC 110, remaing undefeated with a first-round knockout of former UFC and PRIDE champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.

After dominating from the onset with a mixture of accurate striking, Velasquez downed Nogueira with a right as they approached the midway point of the opening frame then finished him off with a series of unanswered punches on the ground that forced the referee to intervene.

Velasquez improves to 8-0 with the victory, including six-straight UFC wins, and remains in line for an eventual title shot that could come as early as July against champion Brock Lesnar, pending the outcome of a March interim title showdown between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin. Nogueira falls to 32-6-1.

In the UFC 110 co-main event, Wanderlei Silva nearly finished Michael Bisping in his anticipated middleweight debut, but instead settled for a narrow unanimous decision over The Ultimate Fighter 3 winner.

Bisping earned the first round with a series of takedowns, but Silva turned things around in the second, first stuffing the takedowns then finally connecting with punches before nearly securing the finish with a late guillotine attempt. In the third, Silva continued to land combinations then appeared on his way to a last-second TKOafter downing Bisping in the closing seconds, but he was unable to finish with ground and pound before the final bell sounded.

Despite a back-and-forth battle and narrow second round, the judges unanimously awarded Silva the victory (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) to the visible disagreement of Bisping.

In other main card action, Australian George Sotiropoulos continued his climb up the lightweight ladder by outpointing former challenger Joe Stevenson with superior grappling to earn a unanimous decision, while TUF 8 winner Ryan Bader scored a third-round knockout of Keith Jardine and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic slashed his was to a second-round TKO of late-replacement Anthony Perosh.

On the UFC 110 preliminary card, Krzysztof Soszyski gashed Stephan Bonnar with an accident headbutt in the third, but was awarded a TKO victory, Chris Lytle quickly submitted Brian Foster with an opening-round kneebar, CB Dollaway took a unanimous decision over Goran Reljic, and James Te Huna debuted in his home country with a third-round TKO of Igor Pokrajac.

The complete UFC 110 results were:

On the heels of their appearance Wednesday morning on ESPN's SportsCenter, UFC President Dana White said during an afternoon conference call that heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar could return at UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas.

On the heels of their appearance Wednesday morning on ESPN’s SportsCenter, UFC President Dana White said during an afternoon conference call that heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar could return at UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas.

Though the date would give the winner of a March showdown between Shane Carwin and Frank Mir just two months to prepare, Lesnar’s desire to return to the Octagon sooner rather than later could fast track the bout. Should the Carwin-Mir winner be unable to fight Lesnar at UFC 114, he could instead meet the winner of a February matchup between Cain Velasquez and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira before fighting Carwin or Mir later in the year.

Lesnar, who was reportedly fighting at just 60% of his potential over the last year as a result of his illness, will begin the training camp for his return on Thursday and, while he made it clear he’s interested in a rubber match with the “stalker” Mir, he is preparing for “anyone and everyone.”

“[Everyone] is shitting their pants” now that I’m back, said Lesnar.

Other notes from the call included:

Brock was sick for months and had a small hole in his stomach for over a year, making him miss weeks of training camps with flu-like symptoms that limited his performance to 60%. He was diagnosed with mononucleosis, but declined a CT scan, which let the diverticulitis he was ultimately diagnosed with go undetected for even longer.

Lesnar stressed that he means no offense to Canada, but his treatment there was low point of his illness. Fled hospital against doctor’s orders and had wife drive him at over 100 miles-per-hour to a hospital in North Dakota. Underwent minor procedure, and both hospital and Mayo Clinic recommended surgery, which would have prompted him to retire, but he declined and ultimately healed on his own.

A protein-rich diet caused Lesnar’s health issues, and he is now eating a well-balanced diet to prevent future issues.

Lesnar’s lowest weight was 248-pounds, but he is now back up to 273. He joked that he hadn’t been that light since second grade.

When he resumed training, Lesnar felt like he was “starting from ground zero” and was being tossed around by his training partner, but feels the experience helped his endurance.
