Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Rogers” Results: Fedor Emelianenko Knocks Out Brett Rogers, Shields Tops “Mayhem” To Win Title

Despite being bloodied in the opening seconds of the fight, top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko did what most predicted he would, scoring a second-round knockout of previously undefeated Brett Rogers on Saturday in the main event of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers.

The bout capped off the promotion’s first CBS-televised event, which took place at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois just outside Chicago.

Rogers opened up a gash on Fedor’s nose with his first punch of the fight, but Emelianenko recovered to batter Rogers with punches throughout the round and also attempted several submissions, but was unable to earn the stoppage in the first.

The pair clinched to start the second but separated and squared off in the center of the cage, where Fedor dropped Rogers with an overhand right and forced the referee, “Big” John McCarthy, to intervene after several follow-up punches on the ground.

Fedor improves to 31-1 with the victory, extending his winning streak to 27-straight, while Rogers falls to 10-1 after suffering the first loss of his career.

After the bout, both Emelianenko and Rogers said they were open to a rematch, though both will almost certainly take on other opponents first. Fabricio Werdum, who won a hard-fought decision over Antonio Silva earlier on the card, and Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem could be next in line for Fedor, while Silva is among the possibilities for Rogers’ next fight.

Shields Tops “Mayhem” To Win Middleweight Title

In the evening’s co-headliner, Jake Shields was crowned Strikeforce’s middleweight champion with a unanimous decision victory over Jason “Mayhem” Miller.

Though Miller appeared closest to ending the fight, securing a tight rear naked choke in the third that he was forced to give up when the bell sounded, Shields was dominant on the ground in earning the victory, taking Miller’s back and getting to mount nearly at will.

Shields, who jumps to 24-4-1 with his 13th-straight win, captures the title which was vacated by Cung Le earlier this year and appears poised to fight the winner of a December 19 matchup between Le and Scott Smith, made official during Saturday’s event, in his first title defense next year.

Miller drops to 22-7 after the loss, his second in his past three fights.

Mousasi, Werdum Earn Main Card Wins

Once-feared striker Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou appeared improved in his non-title matchup with Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi, but in the end it was an outcome”The African Assassin” has become all too familiar with over the last two years, as Mousasi finished a tired Sokoudjou with punches in the second.

In a matchup of heavyweight contenders making their Strikeforce debuts, former UFC contender Fabricio Werdum took out former EliteXC champ Antonio Silva, who returned to the United States after serving a one-year steroid suspension while fighting in Japan.

Coenen Sets Up “Cyborg” Fight With Win; Curran Snaps Losing Streak

On the “Fedor vs. Rogers” preliminary card, Marloes Coenen quickly submitted Roxanne Modafferi to likely earn a title shot against champ Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos early next year, while Jeff Curran snapped his four-fight losing streak when opponent Dustin Neace was forced to quit due to a rib injury in the opening round.

Strikeforce Looking To Pick Up Bobby Lashley

WWE star turned MMA prospect Bobby Lashley is reportedly in talks with Strikeforce to be a part of their upcoming November 7 CBS televised event. Lashley still has two fights left on his contract with Prize Fight Promotions, and was rumored to have a November match-up with Ron Waterman with the promotion. However, MMAFanhouse says they have reason to believe he will be making his Strikeforce debut on the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers headlined event, though no deal has been signed.

Lashley was last in action defeating Bobb Sapp via TKO June 27 in the headlining fight of Prize Fight Promotion’s “Ultimate Chaos” event, continuing his four fight undefeated career. Lashley had previously defeated Mike Cook at a May MFC event, as well as Jason Guida in March for Square Ring Promotions.

If Lashley were to sign with Strikeforce for the November 7th event, there has not yet been word of who his opponent may be. It is also still unclear if the Strikeforce deal, should it work out, would mean that Lashley would not be involved in a November event for Prize Fight Promotions.

Ratings for the second episode of The Ultimate Fighter 10 dropped 29 percent to 2.9 million from the series record 4.1 million who tuned in for the TUF 10 debut. [Spike TV]

The lineup for WEC 43 on October 18 in San Antonio has undergone a number of changes over the last week as Rafael Rebello, Mark Hominick, and Akitoshi Tamura have all been forced to withdraw from the card due to injuries. UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre recently did an interview with TSN.ca. in which he told them that he is “close to getting back to 110 percent in October.” The French-Canadian fighter also mentioned that he is continuing to look to improve his game including starting yoga, and a more healthy diet.
The UFC is making its second trip to Texas on Saturday and hopes to avoid some of the embarrassment it experienced following it’s previous trip for UFC 69. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation does not require drug screening for combat sports, so the UFC has requested a third party conduct random testing for UFC 103. The promotion does not know which fighters will be tested, and will only be notified of positive results, should any occur. [MMAJunkie]
The WEC recently secured a deal to air its programming on one of the few remaining Setanta Sports stations, Setanta Sports Australia. The WEC programming is scheduled to begin just prior to the October 10, WEC 43.
At the pre-fight press conference for UFC 103 on Thursday, the president of the American Airlines Center said that the event had already eclipsed gross sales for any other sporting event held at the venue. He also said that the event’s gross ticket sales were second only to a 2005 Rolling Stones concert for any event the facility has hosted.
Ultimate Fight Night 19 became the fifth highest attended “Fight Night” event for the UFC, attracting a crowd of 7,500 spectators to the Cox Convention Center Wednesday night. The event in Oklahoma City also garnered second ranking gross sales number for all “Fight Night” events with a live gate of $650,000.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers Will Air On CBS On November 7

Recent Strikeforce acquisition, and top ranked heavyweight fighter Fedor Emelianenko will make his Strikeforce debut against Brett Rogers on national television. The promotions first event to be televised on CBS since striking their deal with the network will take place on November 7, 2009. The bout itself has been locked up for some time, though the date had yet to be finalized. As of this time the venue from which the card will be broadcast is still uknown. There has also yet to be any other bouts rumored for the event.

Emelianenko is regarded by many as the best heavyweight in the world, though he is still somewhat unknown in regards to the general MMA audience in the US. By placing the 30-1-1 fighter on Strikeforce’s inaugural CBS card, that is likely to change. Previous MMA events shown on CBS, promoted by EliteXC, brought in as many as four million viewers.

Rogers is an undefeated young fighter, who has actually already been on CBS while he was with Elite XC. Rogers also shares a common last opponent with Emelianenko, both men having defeated former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in their last outings, though Rogers did so more quickly.

CBS is no stranger to televising MMA, having thrice aired EliteXC events, however this will be the first Strikeforce promoted event to air on the network. The last EliteXC card shown on the network was EliteXC Heat on October 4, 2008 and pulled in an estimated 4.3 million viewers.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers Possible for October 10 in New Jersey

An upcoming Strikeforce event headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers could take place on October 10 in New Jersey, according to ESPN’s MMA Live.

Emelianenko’s Strikeforce debut was originally rumored for October, but Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced last month that it was instead expected to take place in November. It now appears, however, that the fight is again slated for October, giving the top heavyweights about six-weeks prepare for the bout since it was announced in late-August.

Emelianenko (30-1) brings a 26-fight win streak into the contest that includes a reign as the heavyweight champion of PRIDE as well as back-to-back victories over Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski in his most-recent fights.

Like Emelianenko, Rogers (10-0) is also coming off a first-round knockout of the former UFC heavyweight champion Arlovski. “Grim” defeated Abongo Humphrey in April in his Strikeforce debut and previously won three-straight fights in EliteXC.

A venue was not revealed for the possible date, and it is not yet clear whether the UFC will attempt to organize a card to counter-program the Showtime-televised event.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers Announced for Upcoming Strikeforce Event

Top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will make his Strikeforce debut against Brett Rogers this fall, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced at an open workout for Emelianenko on Wednesday in New York City.

A date and location have not yet been confirmed for the matchup, which ends weeks of speculation that have ensued after Emelianenko’s August 1 Affliction fight against Josh Barnett was canceled and he subsequently signed with Strikeforce following the collapse of Affliction. Earlier this month, Coker said Emelianenko’s debut would likely headline a November Showtime event.

With Fedor now set to fight Rogers, Fabricio Werdum, the other likely opponent for Emelianenko, is likely to fight Strikeforce heavyweight title-holder Alistair Overeem at the promotion’s November or December event, with the winners then meeting in 2010.
