Chael Sonnen will get another shot at middleweight champ Anderson Silva as early as UFC 125 on Jan. 1, but the rematch could be delayed until Super Bowl weekend.

A rematch between lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard is also slated for early-2011 and could take place at UFC 125 or an expected UFC 126 event later in January in Pittsburgh.

Saturday’s UFC 117 event, headlined by middleweight champ Anderson Silva vs. trash-talking challenger Chael Sonnen, outperformed estimates and is trending towards 1 million pay-per-view buys, making it one of the most-watched events in the company’s history and on track with May’s UFC 114, which featured Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Rashad Evans.

A rib injury which nearly forced Anderson Silva out of Saturday’s UFC 117 main event against Chael Sonnen will likely sideline the UFC middleweight champ until February or March.

The injury could allow Vitor Belfort to face Sonnen this fall to determine who would challenge Silva when he returns next year.

While UFC President Dana White is considering an immediate rematch of Saturday’s UFC 117 main event between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, Silva’s manager Ed Soares doesn’t believe a rematch makes sense:

“You’re on a guy 23 minutes and you couldn’t finish him? Why should he get a rematch?”

Following Anderson Silva’s comeback win over Chael Sonnen at Saturday’s UFC 117, UFC President Dana White said he was undecided on what was next for the middleweight champion, who could face an immediate rematch with Sonnen or meet contender Vitor Belfort in his next fight.

Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen, Matt Hughes, and Stefan Struve earned $60,000 “fight night”‘ bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC 117.

Silva and Sonnen earned “Fight of the Night” honors, Silva and Hughes scored “Submission of the Night” bonuses, and Struve earned “Knockout of the Night.”

Chael Sonnen dominated Anderson Silva on Saturday in the main event of UFC 117 and was just minutes from dethroning the middleweight champion in what would have been one of the biggest upsets in the promotion’s history.

Instead, it was Silva making history with a miraculous comeback, as he forced Sonnen to tap to a triangle choke in the fifth and final round to retain the 185-pound title at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
