Will Kerr Replaces Injured Alex Karalexis Against Kamal Shalorus at WEC 44 (updated)

Will Kerr has been tapped to make his WEC debut as a late-replacement for an injured Alex Karalexis, taking on fellow newcomer Kamal Shalorus at WEC 44 on November 18 in Las Vegas.

Karalexis was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a hand injury, according to the WEC’s announcement. A timeline for his return was not released.

Kerr (7-1) has won four-straight, but has not fought since a unanimous decision over Marc Stevens last September.

Shalorus (4-0-1) remained undefeated in June with a second-round TKO of Justin Miller.

WEC 44 airs live on Versus and is headlined by featherweight champion Mike Brown vs. Jose Aldo.

Injury Roundup: Alex Karalexis, Kyle Bradley, Nick Thompson Withdraw From Upcoming Bouts

The WEC announced on Tuesday that a WEC 43 lightweight matchup between Alex Karalexis and Anthony Pettis was scratched from the September 2 card in Ohio after Karalexis suffered an undisclosed injury. Rafael Assuncao vs. Yves Jabouin will replace the bout on the Versus-broadcast main card.
Lightweight Kyle Bradley has suffered an undisclosed injury that will prevent him from fighting Sam Stout at UFC Fight Night 19 on September 16 in Oklahoma City. It is not yet known whether the UFC will seek a replacement to fight Stout at UFC Fight Night 19 or another upcoming card, or, depending on the severity of the injury, Bradley-Stout is re-booked for a future event.
Welterweight Nick “The Goat” Thompson has been forced to withdraw from his M-1 Global: Breakthrough bout on August 28 against Karl Amoussou after recently suffering a cut while training. It is not yet known whether the promotion will be able to secure an opponent on short notice to fight Amoussou or whether the fight will be scratched from the HDNet-televised event.

WEC 39 Results: Brown Submits Garcia To Retain Title

WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown sent challenger Leonard Garcia to the canvas with an overhand right in the opening minute of their WEC 39 headliner then went to work to finish his opponent, working ground and pound and attempting a rear naked choke before ultimately forcing Garcia to tap to an arm triangle at 1:57 of the first.

Brown improved to 21-4 with his first title defense, while Garcia falls to 12-3 with the unsuccessful challenge.

The event took place on Sunday, March 1st, at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas and aired live on Versus.

Former champion Urijah Faber is likely to rematch Brown for the belt this summer. Brown captured the title with a first-round TKO of Faber last November. Meanwhile, Garcia could square off with top-contender and WEC 39 victor Jose Aldo to get back into the 145-pound title picture.

Ricardo Lamas, Aldo, and Rob McCullough also earned victories on the evening’s main card.

All twenty WEC 39 fighters, including featherweight champion Mike Brown and challenger Leonard Garcia, successfully made weight this morning at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

WEC 39: Brown vs. Garcia takes place tomorrow evening at the American Bank Center and airs live on Versus.

Mike Brown, who captured the 145-pound title from Urijah Faber in his last bout, tipped the scales at 144.25 pounds while UFC veteran Leonard Garcia weighed-in exactly at 145 pounds.

WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres (35-1) successfully defended his title on Wednesday night at The Joint at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, dispatching 135-pound challenger Manny Tapia (10-1-1) with strikes midway through the second round of their WEC 37 headliner.

Bantamweight contender Brian Bowles (7-0) remained undefeated in a featured undercard bout, submitting Will Ribeiro (9-2) early in the third round.

Bart Palaszewski vs. Alex Karalexis Added To WEC 37

Lightweight IFL veteran Bart Palaszewski (28-11) will make his WEC debut on December 3rd at WEC 37 in Las Vegas against Alex Karalexis (9-3), according to MMA Weekly.

The lightweight matchup is expected to appear on the televised main card, which will air live on Versus.

Palaszewski emerged as a top lightweight in the IFL after racking up eleven-straight victories, including IFL wins over Steve Bruno and Ryan Schultz. After suffering a loss to Chris Horodecki in early-2007, Palaszewski won three-straight bouts, but then dropped three-straight to notables Deividas Taurosevicius, Horodecki, and Jim Miller. “Bartimus” bounced back in his most recent bout, defeating Jeff Cox via second-round knockout at Adenaline MMA in June.

Karalexis is a UFC veteran who left the promotion following back-to-back losses to Kenny Florian and Jason Von Flue but returned to the WEC in 2006 and scored three-straight wins over Thomas Denny, Olaf Alonso, and Josh Smith. “The Assasin” was defeated by Ed Ratcliff via second-round TKO in his most-recent bout at WEC 31 last December.

UFC Roundup: Randy Couture Guest Appearance, Upcoming Drug Hearings, December WEC Event, and More

The UFC’s sister organization, World Extreme Cagefighting, will return on December 12th for its first show in more than three months. The stacked card is rumored to include:
- WEC Featherweight Championship: Urijah Faber vs. Jeff Curran
- WEC Light Heavyweight Championship: Doug Marshall vs. Ariel Gandulla
- WEC Middleweight Championship: Paulo Filho vs. TBD (possibly Frank Trigg)

Popular MMA brand Tapout has signed a deal with the Creative Artists Agency to further extend their brand.
Early reports suggest that M-1, the promotion that signed Fedor Emelianenko, is in talks to air on ESPN and could put on its first show in February in Chicago. UFC veteran Jeff Monson is rumored to be a possible opponent for Emelianenko’s debut.
The UFC’s PPV bonus scale has gone public:
- 100,000 – 175,000 buys – $1 per buy

Randy Couture will make a guest appearance tomorrow night on “The Unit”. The show will air at 9pm on CBS.
UFC veteran Sean Salmon is expected to face Jason “Mayhem” Miller on the next HDNet Fights card in December.
Paulo Filho and Thiago Silva have both joined Team Link which includes top UFC heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga.
Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, Rich Franklin, and Matt Hughes are no longer associated with Xyience.
UFC veteran Elvis Sinosic has been added to the Cage Rage 24 fight card.
Sean Sherk, Kazuhiro Nakamura, and Phil Baroni will all have steroid hearings on Wednesday in front of the California State Athletic Commission. Sherk’s hearing is especially important as the result will determine who BJ Penn will face for the lightweight title in December at UFC 79.
Top-ranked middleweight fighter Dennis Kang was defeated by Yoshihiro Akiyama in his HERO’S debut. Kang, a PRIDE veteran, was expected to jump to the UFC following Zuffa’s purchase of the promotion earlier this year but opted to sign with HERO’S instead. He remains a top middleweight fighter and could be signed by the UFC in the future to bolster their lagging middleweight division.
