This is interesting. He says he can “get the title at 170″. Maybe Rashad inspired him to go after gold no matter who your boy is.

I doubt nate could make ww though. He’s a big 185er if you ask me. But if he did I think his style/skills would serve him well at 170.

Nate Marquardt is talented enough to win the belt at 185 once Anderson Silva retires all he lacks is not skill and talent because he has that already but moreso killer instinct, mental toughness and badassery, once he gets those he’s all set. At 170 he has to worry about guys like Fitch and Koscheck who would school him with their wretling and someone like Jake Shields who can submit him and of course guys like Thiago Alvez who can knock him out, a tough road either way at 185 or 170 but i still think he’s best at 185.

I don’t think it matter’s what weight Marquart goes to He still going to be that 5-10 ranked fighter. If he would go lower though at least then he might be a little bigger, but will he lose his strength.

I think Marquart would be a beast at 170, provided he doesn’t lose strength or gas out. I think he could dominate better at 170 than 185. I personally like him where he is at 185 because I think he matches up well with fighters like Leben, Stan, Wandy, and Vitor.

It’s a toss up either way. Wherever he can be the most successful is where he should go.

Yeah Jason i agree he would def. be the favorite against Leben,Vitor, Stann, Wandy i picture him just grinding and pounding all of them, but when he faces a guy with same skills like Sonnen, and Okami he has trouble switching up.I like Marquart he’s all around beast , but I just cant picture him ever wearing the gold.

I don’t think anyone questions Nate Marqaurdt’s skills, but I have to question his ability to make 170 and still be “Nate Marqaurdt”, and not a manorexic facsimilie thereof.

I’ve met NM before at fan expos, and trust me when I tell you that the guy is built like a college throwball tailback.

More power to the guy if he thinks shrinking himself into the 170 weightclass will help him strike gold, but I just don’t see it.

Size, speed, skillset, or strength aren’t NM’s problem/s.

Its his mental focus and the input he gets from his corner during critical fights.

I understand NM has commented about doubting his cardio at 185, but I don’t have a lot of memories of him gassing.

What I do recall are wasted opportunities because of sh!t fightplans and diluted 3rd round intensity.

I don’t see a drop to 170, which would involve close to a 30 pound weightcut, as the remedy for his corner telling him he’s winning a fight he isn’t, or entering the Octagon with a flawed fightplan…

Yeah Jcohl i agree that’s what i was trying to say the dude lacks a solid game plan in big fights. But he has all the physical tools.

I’m half-convinced that Marquardt’s 170 chatter has a lot to do with his [and Greg Jackson's] concerns about him getting buried on free-per-views and undercards after he sh!t the bed against Yushin Okami…

Yeah Nate Def. took beatings by Okami and Sonnen,so now he’s looking at his options i’m surprised he’s looking at 170 and not 205.

I’m still not convinced he’ll make the weight cut east enough. It might take too much of a toll on him. Look how Mayhem looked at 170, and he’s a smaller man that Nate. But if he could handle it, he might very well be a beast there.

If Rumble Johnson can make 170 and not gas out, I’m sure Nate can do it too. Johnson is the bigger guy, maybe he’s just a freak of nature and has light bones, but I think with the right cut Nate can make 170 too
