Roger Gracie Withdraws From Sengoku 5

Roger Gracie has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming Sengoku 5 bout against Travis Wiuff due to a rib injury, according to Sherdog.com:

On Sept. 8, Gracie was sparring when he took a hard kick to the ribs. After being examined by renowned physiotherapist Dr. Kevin Lidlow, who has previously worked with the British Olympic team, Gracie was diagnosed with an intermuscular tear to the intercostal muscle between the sixth and seventh left ribs.

Gracie is currently undergoing physiotherapy, and Lidlow has advised the grappling kingpin that he should not train for at least four weeks, at which point he will be reassessed with the possibility of resuming light, controlled training.

Roger Gracie vs. Travis Wiuff Complete Sengoku 5 Lineup

World Victory Road announced today that Roger Gracie will face Travis Wiuff at Sengoku 5 completing the event’s lineup.

Sengoku 5 takes place at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan on September 28th and includes the opening round of the promotion’s 2008 middleweight grand prix as well as former IFL lightweight champion Ryan Schultz taking on Jorge Masvidal.

WVR Finalizes Sengoku 5 Middleweight GP First Round, Announces Ribeiro vs. Sugiura

World Victory Road today announced additional matchups for Sengoku 5, which takes place on September 28th at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.

The opening round of the promotion’s middleweight grand prix is now set as UFC and PRIDE veteran Kazuhiro Nakamura will meet Paul Cahoon in the first round and Jorge Santiago will take on Logan Clark. Previously announced for the tournament were Yuki Kondo vs. Yuki Sasaki and Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos vs. Siyar Bahadurzada.

World Victory Road also announced that Jiu-Jitsu world champion Xande Ribeiro will make his mixed martial arts debut against professional wrestler Takashi Sugiura at Sengoku 5.

IFL lightweight champion Ryan Schultz faces Jorge Masvidal at the September 28th event and Roger Gracie will also be in action against an opponent to-be-determined.

Light heavyweight free agent Tito Ortiz confirmed on the latest edition of HDNet’s “Inside MMA” that he is currently in negotiations with Affliction, EliteXC, and the UFC.
The winner of the September 10th WEC 36 bout between former WEC lightweight champion Rob McCullough and Donald Cerrone has been guaranteed a 155-pound title shot title shot. [MMA Junkie]
The California State Athletic Commission this week released the official fight salaries for ShoXC “Suganuma vs. Hamman 2″, which took place earlier this month. The event’s top-earner was Jared Hamman, who made $8,000 for his first-round TKO of Po’ai Suganuma, who made $5,000 in the loss. [MMA Junkie]
The Ultimate Fighter 6 cast member Jon Koppenhaver this week announced that he has legally changed his name to War Machine due to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling trademarking “War Machine” as the nickname for professional wrestler Rhino.

In middleweight tournament bouts slated for the card Yuki Sasaki will fight Yuki Kondo and Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos will face Siyar Bahadurzada. Kazuhiro Nakamura and Jorge Santiago are also slated to participate the in the middleweight tournaments but their opponents have not yet been announced.
Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem will take on PRIDE and UFC veteran Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at DREAM 6 on September 23rd at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. [Sherdog]

World Victory Road yesterday announced the official fight card for Sengoku 4, which takes place on August 24th at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Sengoku 4 features a main event lightweight bout between former PRIDE champion Takanori Gomi and Bang Seung Hwan. The opening round of the promotion’s 2008 lightweight grand prix is also slated for the event.
