WVR Cancels New Years Eve Sengoku, Likely To Co-Promote With FEG For Dynamite!! 2009

World Victory Road, the promotion behind the “Sengoku” titled fight events has reportedly canceled it’s scheduled New Years Event. The event would have featured the replacement of the name “Sengoku” with “Sengoku Raiden Championships” for the MMA events, and gone head to head with FEG’s “Dynamite!!2009″ New Years Eve event. Instead it appears that WVR will be teaming up with FEG to promote Dynamite!!2009, according to a report Josh Gross.

WVR had been scheduled to hold a press conference concerning the event, and a forth coming TV deal for the promotion this week, however that press conference was canceled, starting rumors that the NYE show was in danger of being canceled. Since that time, however, BloodyElbow has confirmed with multiple sources that the event has been scrapped.

FEG held a press conference today announcing Andy Souwer as the final opponent for retiring K-1 legend Masato, at the “Dynamite!!” New Years Eve event, which remains the fight card’s only confirmed bout. During the conference they claimed that they had not had any talks with WVR, and otherwise skirted the topic. Other bouts rumored for the event include Super Hulk Tournament Finale of Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Ikuhisa Minowa, and a lightweight title defense by Shinya Aoki against Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Last year’s Dynamite!!2008 obtained lower than expected ratings, and the possibility of two New Years Eve MMA events both drawing heavily this year was not likely. The only fight that had thus been scheduled for the Sengoku show could certainly help bolster the numbers for Dynamite!!2009 if the two companies do, in fact, combine efforts this year. That bout would be the MMA debut of 2008 Olympic gold medal winning Judoka, Satosho Iishi against fellow Judoka, and MMA veteran, Hidehiko Yoshida.

Michihiro Omigawa upset Hatsu Hioki on Saturday at Sengoku 11 in Tokyo, Japan, receiving a controversial split decision win in the evening’s main event.

Also on the card, Mamed Khalidov extended his unbeaten streak to 18-straight by making quick work of Jorge Santiago, while notables Jorge Masvidal, Akihiro Gono, and Dave Herman also picked up wins.

All 22 fighters set to participate at Saturday’s Sengoku 11th Battle event in Tokyo, Japan successfully made weight earlier today for their bouts.

DREAM recently announced additions and changes to the fight card for its October 25 DREAM 12 event, including Kazushi Sakuraba replacing Melvin Manhoef against Zelg Galesic and welterweight champ Marius Zaromskis’ return to action in a non-title bout against Myeon Ho Bae. Paulo Filho is off the card after failing to arrive in Japan for his fight with Dong Sik Yoon due to visa issues, and will be replaced by Tarec Saffedine. Rumina Sato, originally scheduled to fight Joe Warren at Vale Tudo Japan, will instead fight Warren’s Team Quest training partner Corey “Savage” Gran at the October 30 event after Warren was forced to withdraw after suffering a knee injury while training.
World Victory Road announced additions to its November 11 Sengoku 11th Battle card on Wednesday, confirming Akihiro Gono vs. Yoon Young Kim and Hirokazu “Bull” Konno vs. Tomoaki Ueyama for the HDNet-televised event, which takes place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan. World Victory Road also announced several participants for their New Years Eve show, which will go head to head with FEG’s Dynamite!! 2009. The event and will feature the new name of Sengoku Raiden Championships, replacing Sengoku, but continuing their existing number system, making the event Sengoku Raiden Championships. So far the only confirmed match-up is Satoshi Ishii making his MMA debut against Hidehiko Yoshida. Other participants that have been announced are Mizuto Hirota, Masanori Kanehara, Satoru Kitaoka, Hatsu Hioki, Michihiro Omigawa, Kazunori Yokota, Eiji Mitsuoka, Makoto Takimoto, Hiroshi Izumi and Kazuhiro Nakamura.
Former UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia will return to action on New Year’s Eve at DREAM/K-1 Dynamite!! 2009 in Saitama, Japan, likely fighting Alistair Overeem or Hong Man Choi at the December 31 event, according to Sylvia’s manager Monte Cox, who confirmed the bout with MMA Fanhouse on Wednesday.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman will look to get back in the win column after losing to Mike Whitehead at a June Strikeforce event, facing off against undefeated Stanislav Nedkov at Sengoku 11. [MMAJunkie]
DEEP’s “45th Impact” will include a “Guam vs. Japan” format which will include Guam champions Justin Cruz (140 lbs) and Roque Martinez (Heavyweight). Cruz’s opponents could either be DEEP featherweight champion Takafumi Otsuka or bantamweight champion Masakazu Iminari, since he normally fights between those weights. Martinez’s opponent will likely be Yusuke Kawaguchi if he wins his upcoming bout against Seigo Mizuguchi. The event is scheduled to take place in December. [BloodyElbow]

Following his Korean giant Hong Man Choi’s victory over Jose Canseco in the opening round of the Dream Super Hulk Tournament, US basketball star (and MMA fan) Shaquille O’Neal expressed interest in facing off against the 7-2 Choi, after his basketball career had ended. Prior to his bout Tuesday against Ikuhisa Minowa at Dream 11, MMAFanhouse asked Choi if he was open to that match up, to which he responded, “Yes, if there is a chance.” It would be no surprise if FEG promoted this fight for one of it’s Dream events, once Shaq does leave the NBA.

Ratings for the second episode of The Ultimate Fighter 10 dropped 29 percent to 2.9 million from the series record 4.1 million who tuned in for the TUF 10 debut. [Spike TV]

The lineup for WEC 43 on October 18 in San Antonio has undergone a number of changes over the last week as Rafael Rebello, Mark Hominick, and Akitoshi Tamura have all been forced to withdraw from the card due to injuries. Sengoku 10 Results: Nansen Spoils Izumi’s Debut; Silva, Hornbuckle, and Doerksen Win

Kickboxer Antz Nansen spoiled the MMA debut of fellow-newcomer Hiroshi Izumi on Wednesday in the main event of Sengoku 10, stopping the 2004 Olympic judo silver medalist from Japan with strikes in the opening round of the headliner at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Antonio Silva won his sixth-straight in the Sengoku 10 co-main event, submitting Jim York in the opening round to pick up his second-straight win outside the US since testing positive for steroids after winning the EliteXC heavyweight title last summer.

In other notable action, former IFL champ Ryan Schultz dropped his third-straight with a first-round knockout at the hands of Kazunori Yokota, Dan Hornbuckle stopped veteran Nick Thompson with strikes in the second-round, and Joe Doerksen won his fourth-straight with a second-round TKO of Takenori Sato.

All 22 fighters slated to compete on Wednesday at Sengoku 10 today hit the scales in Japan and successfully weighed in for their mathups.

The event takes place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan and will be broadcast live in North America on HDNet.

Hiroshi Izumi (205) and Antz Nansen (204.1), both MMA newcomers with backgrounds in judo and kickboxing respectively, successfully made weight for their light heavyweight main event. Co-headliner Antonio Silva, the former EliteXC heavyweight champ whose foughts outside the US since testing positive for steroids last July, weighed in at 270-pounds for his matchup against Jim York, who tipped the scale at 253.1 pounds.

All six fighters that were drug tested for UFC 102 tested clean. The fighters tested included headliners Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and previously suspended Chris Leben, as well as Todd Duffee, Evan Dunham, and Aaron Simpson. [MMAWeekly]
Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber announced via Twitter today that he has been given the go ahead to hit the punching bag and hopes to be back in action by January.
Weigh-ins for UFC 103 will take place this Friday, September 18 at the Dallas Convention Center Arena in Dallas, Texas at 5pm ET, while “Countdown to UFC 103,” the official preview show for Saturday’s pay-per-view event, debuts tonight on SpikeTV at 7pm ET/PT.
A knee injury has forced Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante to withdraw from his scheduled fight against Daisuke Nakamura at Dream 11 on October 6th. [WrestlingObserver]

Dan Cramer has been released by the UFC following a Saturday loss to Matthew Riddle at UFC 101. The UFC.com profiles for Cramer, Thales Leites, George Roop and Danillo Villefort, have all been taken down, fueling speculation that Leites, Roop, and Villefort may have also been cut following their UFC 101 fights.
The UFC announced on Wednesday that it will be counter-programing Saturday’s Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg Showtime-televised event by airing UFC 100, featuring Brock Lesnar’s win over Frank Mir and Dan Henderson’s knockout of Michael Bisping, for free on Spike TV.
World Victory Road announced on Wednesday that Olympic Judo silver medalist Hiroshi Izumi’s MMA debut would headline the promotion’s Sengoku 10 event on September 23 in Japan.
A heavyweight bout between Jessie Gibbs and Rob Broughton originally scheduled for Affliction: Trilogy has been re-scheduled for M-1 Global’s August 28 “Breakthrough” event in Kansas City.

Anderson Silva says he won’t be relinquishing his middleweight title as previously reported and isn’t interested in a rematch with Dan Henderson, at least not until he fights the winner of Nate Marquard-Demian Maia.
“Countdown to UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira” will debut on August 27 at 11pm ET on Spike TV.
The WEC’s 125-pound flyweight division will likely debut in early-2010.
Chuck Liddell, Frank Mir, Urijah Faber, and Jens Pulver will participate in pre-WEC 43 activities in Youngstown, Ohio and will all be in attendance for the September 2 event.
Heavyweight prospect Bobby Lashley will reportedly fight Ron Waterman at an October 3 Prize Fight Promotions event in Denver, Colorado.
A bantamweight matchup between Chase Beebe and Mike Easton will headline UWC: Redemption on October 3 in Fairfax, Virginia.
Middleweight Matt Lindland is ‘very confident’ he’ll make his Strikeforce debut this fall.
