  • Robbie LawlerLightweight Chris Horodecki is expected to sign with the WEC very soon, according to his trainer Shawn Thompkins. If the deal goes through, the 22-year-old Canadian would enter the organization with a 13-1 record, having suffered his only loss to Ryan Schutlz in the IFL.
  • Jeff Curran’s next fight will not come under the WEC banner after four consecutive losses in the organization, but will instead be on the undercard of the November 7 “Fedor vs. Rogers” event after “The Big Frog” recently signed a two-fight non-exclusive deal with the promotion. Curran is also expected to compete in his own XFO promotion on December 5th against Tomohiko Hori.
  • Robbie Lawler is expected to return to action in December, though no opponent has been finalized. MMA Fanhouse reports that Lawler has been offered both Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Nick Diaz as possible opponents for the Strikeforce event, but that Lawler’s manager, Monte Cox, is opposed to the idea of Lawler fighting Souza.
  • Sean Salmon has been issued a one-year administrative suspension, and fined $2,500 by the Ohio Athletic Commission due to comments in a September column for MMAJunkie.com in which he hinted that he may have intentionally given up a submission in a June fight against Allan Weickert, which took place in Ohio.
  • Middleweight combatant Xavier Foupa-Pokam is will headline the next edition of Tachi Palace Fights on December 3rd against California based fighter Mike Moreno. He is also scheduled to compete this coming Saturday in Edmonton, Alberta-based Aggression MMA’s inaugural event, where he will look to rebound from his 0-2 stint in the UFC against Chester Post, a fighter with a record of 6-17-1. Other bouts on the Aggression MMA fight card include Jason Lambert vs. Matt Horwich, Travis Fulton vs. Jason Fairn, and Cyrille Diabate vs. Marcus Hicks among others.
  • Australian MMA Verteran James Te Huna is expected to make his UFC debut at UFC 110 in Australia after recently signing with the promotion.
  • Dutch heavyweight Gilbert Yvel, under scrutiny due to his past unsportsmanlike actions, was recently granted a one-fight license by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, potentially opening the door for Yvel to fight in the UFC, though there have been no reports that he’s in talks with the organization.
  • Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem’s manager, Bas Boon, recently stated that Overeem is looking to defend that title in late February or early March, matching the time line for his return that Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently laid out for his return.

  • At a Tuesday press conference, DREAM revealed the six-sided “white cage” it will use for its October 25 DREAM 12 event, which will also mark the promotion’s first use of the standard three, five-minute round fights, a format that will only be used once each year.   • Georges St-PierreUFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre recently did an interview with TSN.ca. in which he told them that he is “close to getting back to 110 percent in October.” The French-Canadian fighter also mentioned that he is continuing to look to improve his game including starting yoga, and a more healthy diet.
  • The UFC is making its second trip to Texas on Saturday and hopes to avoid some of the embarrassment it experienced following it’s previous trip for UFC 69. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation does not require drug screening for combat sports, so the UFC has requested a third party conduct random testing for UFC 103. The promotion does not know which fighters will be tested, and will only be notified of positive results, should any occur. [MMAJunkie]
  • The WEC recently secured a deal to air its programming on one of the few remaining Setanta Sports stations, Setanta Sports Australia. The WEC programming is scheduled to begin just prior to the October 10, WEC 43.
  • At the pre-fight press conference for UFC 103 on Thursday, the president of the American Airlines Center said that the event had already eclipsed gross sales for any other sporting event held at the venue. He also said that the event’s gross ticket sales were second only to a 2005 Rolling Stones concert for any event the facility has hosted.
  • Ultimate Fight Night 19 became the fifth highest attended “Fight Night” event for the UFC, attracting a crowd of 7,500 spectators to the Cox Convention Center Wednesday night. The event in Oklahoma City also garnered second ranking gross sales number for all “Fight Night” events with a live gate of $650,000.
  • Former “The Ultimate Fighter 2″ cast member, Seth Petruzelli hinted that he may be making a return to the UFC following his recent victory over Chris Batten at Art of Fighting – Damage in a recent post directed at Kimbo Slice on the popular forum TheUnderground. In a subsequent post he went on to say, “(the UFC) are currently looking to get me a fight.”
  • Strikeforce is reportedly in negotiation with the athletic commission for the state of Illinois to host its November 7th bout headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers.   • UFC President Dana WhiteStrikeforce made no major announcements during a media conference call on Thursday, declining to announce an opponent, date, or location for Fedor Emelianeko’s first Strikeforce bout. Among the noteworthy bits from the call were Showtime saying that Fedor is at least 6 to 9 months away from fighting on pay-per-view, M-1 Global and Fedor saying the UFC’s offer wasn’t as good as reported and that they don’t like the way the UFC treats its fighters, and it was confirmed that the UFC did take action to prevent Gegard Mousasi vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral from taking place at Strikeforce’s August 15 event, but the fight will go on as scheduled.
  • UFC President Dana White was unsurprisingly vocal during today’s final pre-fight press conference for Saturday’s UFC 101 event, calling Strikeforce “Strike-farce” and saying that Fedor will “put them out of business”.
  • The UFC today announced a licensing agreement between JAKKS Pacific and Round 5 that will see new UFC action figure lines.
  • UFC welterweight Yoshiyuki Yoshida will participate in the famed ADCC grappling competition on September 26 and 27 in Barcelona, Spain.
  • Tito Ortiz’s training for a likely fight against Mark Coleman will include sessions with popular boxing trainer Freddie Roach and UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre.
  • Strikeforce has signed undefeated middleweight prospect Zak Cummings.
