Lyoto Machida’s manager, Ed Soares, announced during a recent appearance on TAGG Radio that the light heavyweight contender will next fight in October against an opponent to-be-announced. During the appearance Soares also confirmed that Anderson Silva will indeed take on Yushin Okami next following his July 19th light heavyweight bout against James Irvin.
All of the fighters for today’s Cage Rage 27 event at the Wembley Arena in London successfully made weight yesterday, including UFC veteran Phil Baroni, who weighed in at 169.7 pounds in advance of his welterweight debut against Scott Jansen.
Jess Liaudin and David Bielkheden will both drop from welterweight to lightweight and will square off in a 155-pound bout at UFC 89 on October 19th in Birmingham, England.
UFC welterweight Mike Swick has undergone surgery on his elbow but expects to return to the cage before the end of 2008.
The Ultimate Fighter 4 cast member Jeremy Jackson has been arrested and charged with seven felonies including two felony rape charges.
The Ultimate Fighter 7 cast member Matt Brown will likely take on Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 88 on September 6th in Atlanta. Official bout agreements for the fight will reportedly be finalized this week.
Though still “very involved with ProElite,” Gary Shaw will no longer be “front and center” for EliteXC and will instead serve in a consulting role with the MMA promotion.

Phil Baroni Announces Drop To Welterweight, To Fight Jansen at Cage Rage 27

Current EliteXC fighter and UFC veteran Phil Baroni (10-10) has announced that he will be dropping from the 185-pound middleweight division to the 170-pound welterweight division after losing three straight bouts to Frank Shamrock, Kala Hose, and Joey Villasenor:

“Im making the move because I want to be a World Champion. I dont fight for pay day’s or fame, to be on tv or chick’s. I got into MMA because I wanted to be the best fighter in the world. This is what I feel at this point in my career I need to do. Im feel Im a better fighter than Ive shown in the ring esp as of late.As far as the move to Welter Weight goes I feel great. Im more athletic. Im in much better condition, my hand speed is back, an I would go as far as to say Im alot quicker than I was at my previous best. I feel just as strong physicaly if not stronger do to much greater flexability. Im not going to make any predictions or promises. Ive been very humbled as of late. Ive been handed a real wake up call. Im going to give it my all 100% and do my best. Its Do or Die for me. Im All In! I love to fight. Im a real fighter, an like I said the day I dont think I can be a World Champion is the day Ill retire. Im not done yet, I have alot of fight left inside me. I have alot to prove to myself an alot of people to prove wrong.”

Baroni will make his debut at the new weight class on July 12th at Cage Rage 27 in London, England against Scott Jansen (3-2).

Abdul Mohamed Declines UFC Deal

Cage Rage is producing quite a bit of UFC news this week. The most recent news surrounds current CRC lightweight champion Abdul Mohamed (12-4-2 MMA). According to a report on the Cage Rage website, Mohamed has declined a contract to come to the UFC.

After declining the contract Mohamed is now set to face former UFC fighter Ross Pointon on April 21st at Cage Rage 21: Independence Day. The Cage Rage event and UFC 70 are both set for April 21st in England.

Mohamed has been the British CRC champion since Cage Rage 13 in late 2005. He has a successful record in MMA and is likely one of the biggest UFC prospects from the popular British MMA promotion. Other notable Cage Rage veterans include UFC fighters Michael Bisping, Chris Lytle, Anderson Silva, and Travis Lutter.
