Cyborg-Akano Back On After Overnight Cancelation
Tonight’s Strikeforce bout between Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and Hitomi Akano is back on after being scratched overnight due to Akano’s unwillingness to fight Cyborg, who initially weighed in six pounds over the fighter 146-pound limit.
The fight was at first in doubt due to the weight difference between Akano and Cyborg, which exceeded California’s six pound maximum, but Cyborg reached 149.5 pounds on her second weigh-in attempt to clear the fight with the CSAC. However, Akano, who typically fights at 135 pounds, expressed her displeasure with Cyborg missing weight and threatened to pull out of the fight.
After unofficially withdrawing from the fight overnight, a last-minute deal was reached between Akano and Strikeforce and the fight will remain on the Showtime-televised card, which takes place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

They must have cut some deal, in order for her to fight a younger, heavier opponent. I bet there’s more than a 6 pound weight difference at fight time.
probably more than that fred………cyborg could be up to 160 by fight time and akano would probably be at 149 or 150 because she usually fights in a lower weight class so id say probably 10 or pounds over….but cyborg will orbably destroy akano unless hitomi catch her in a sub…….also hitomi and cyborg dont look half bad in that picture lol
Yeah, Cyborg will be between 160 and 165, Akano will be right around 145 as she didn’t have to cut at all and will likely be right around the same weight she weighed in at. In reality it’s probably a 15 pound minimum weight difference, but probably closer to 20.
Kinda cool that this fight was “saved”, no watch Cyborg is going to get heel hooked or some shhh..
Gun you honestly think a woman can put ten pounds on in a half a day? I don’t know about all that, a few pounds ya ofcourse gotta rehydrate but ten is a lot for a woman to pack back on, imo..
Well I’m off for San Jose here in a bit, Eric never got in touch with me soo I will have to drink a brew without him, and friends have a great day hope u tune in and see some great MMA
“also hitomi and cyborg dont look half bad in that picture lol”
The picture cuts off before Guyborg’s junk.
i didnt mean it that way i ment they look fit
lets be real… 7 pounds over means you knew were going to miss no matter what so you won’t be as physically exhausted as you would be if you were 1.5 over and tried all day to cut that last half pound.
According to the translator, she was 7 pounds over because of a “female problem.” The only “female problem” I know of that weighs 7 pounds is a baby and she clearly wasn’t pregnant. Ugliest. Baby. EVER.
Not making weight is totally unprofessional and there is no excuse for it.If you can’t make the weight you should be fighting in another weight class(though obviously more difficult for the women due to the lack of competition). As for this fight, what you have is essentially a featherweight fighting a welterweight and that’s just not right.Perhaps the rules need to be changed to have same day weigh-ins and suspensions for missing weight?
Agreed Jaymz. Cutting weight, imo, makes fighting more of a science and less of an art. Besides, most (if not all) doctors and nutritionists are opposed to rapid weight fluctuations; it’s just not healty.
