The Ultimate Fighter 9 Episode 2 Recap

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Apr 9, 2009 at 12:08 am ET24 Comments

The Ultimate Fighter 9 LogoAfter a recap of the previous week’s UK elimination fights, UFC President Dana White reveals Dan Henderson as the coach of the US squad. At the UFC gym in Las Vegas the US lightweights and welterweights lineup for the typical speech from White with Henderson observing, but the talk is quickly interrupted when welterweight Jason Pierce drops to the floor and is out cold. After waking up from his weight-cut induced “nap” Pierce reassures White that he’s okay to continue.

We next learn that John-David Shackelford will be unable to compete on the show due to a herpes lesion and he’s quickly dismissed from the competition.

Christian Fulgium is the next US fighter to struggle with shedding weight, coming in two pounds over the welterweight limit on his first weigh-in attempt. With 40 minutes to go before he has to hit 171-pounds Fulgium, who comments that he’s stopped sweating, hops on the treadmill in an attempt to drop the extra weight but it’s obvious he’ll be unable to do so, collapsing to the floor. White informs Fulgium that failing to make weight is a decision he’ll regret for the rest of his life and sends him packing.

With two fighters already dismissed only six of the eight elimination bouts can take place as scheduled. The results of the bouts are:

US WELTERWEIGHT ELIMINATION BOUTS

  • Mark Miller def. Kevin Knabjian via TKO (strikes) — Round 2
  • Jason Pierce def. Steve Berger via unanimous decision — Round 3
  • Damarques Johnson def. Ray Elbe via TKO (strikes) – Round 1

US LIGHTWEIGHT ELIMINATION BOUTS

  • Richie Whitson def. Paul Bird via submission (rear naked choke) — Round 1
  • Santino DeFranco def. Waylon Lowe via submission (rear naked choke) — Round 2
  • Cameron Dollar def. Tom Hayden via submission (rear naked choke) — Round 2

With six bouts now in the books, White reveals the two replacement fighters: Rob Browning (Junie Browning’s younger brother) and Frank Lester. Next week, we’ll see Jason Dent square off with Browning in the final lightweight opener while Kiel Reid takes on Lester in the last welterweight eliminator.

Just got in and I’m begining to watch it off of my dish divvrrr should be interesting… post after I’m dunn watching this thing

  • dbiz says:

    Herpes lesion, not legion.

I was not impressed with some of the fights and despite Henderson’s claim to be pleased you have to figure that watching a guy get pummeled in the turtle position for a couple minutes, only to win on a choke (that fight should have been stopped, we’ve all seen dozens of cover ups get stopped) couldn’t make him feel good.

  • fr702 says:

Meehhhh some guys looked “OK” but I dunno perhaps with Hendo’s help things will be better for the USA squad…. Browning jr, seems to get into the house fuuuck really he is almost as much of a douche as his elder brother… Should be an interesting “season” of TUF, o and Dana making the good friends fight one another is kinda a dick move as well as kinda cool imo.

    • Justin says:

Yeah, I don’t like that Dana made the two friends fight right off, and honestly I think both of them could have been in the house if they had fought different opponents instead of each other.

  • timcat says:

Shawn White to win it all.

  • gunslinger says:

just wait till next week when you see the best team usa member JASON “DYNAMITE” DENT!!!!!!!…then no one will question if team usa is good enough!….in the browning vs dent fight…….Im guessing either jason dent by tko or jason dent by RNC or armbar

    • raffy says:

I thought on the preview they showed browning in the house smashing an egg one of the other fighters chests and being a dick like his brother. (Key words: in the house) Not that I am happy about it, but wouldn’t that lead you to believe that Dent loses to Browning?

      • Justin says:

I was going to point that out, too. Gunslinger, you should really look at all the available information before you start throwing all your support behind someone.

That said, I suppose it’s possible that Dent wins but is injured, though I doubt Robert would show his butt so much if that was the case.

Did anyone else notice that he was being a dick to one of the other team USA guys… what an idiot.

      • gunslinger says:

thats where u r wrong justin…you see i can throw my support where i want to because #1 jason dent is the first pro mma fighter ive ever met and he is local thats why im throwing my support on him plus he is the best one there….you see he will get into the house…for i have checked my info smartmouth :) justin- one jason dent and team griffon rawl mma academy’s myspace has dan henderson as a friend which would mean they at least have became friends and know each other …two pics of dent holding an american flag have already been released and only the guys in the house get to take the individual flag pics also….dent is commentating the whole ultimate fighter series every wednesday at buffalo wild wings in mentor meaning well how could he commentate if he never stayed there…you see justin im not as dumb as you think i know my stuff and my boy dent will make it into the house well as mr.sanders from KFC would say i gar enteeeeeeeee it!

      • chrisl says:

lets also remember they ended the show with them leaving that day SO they may be in the house for a day before coming back and having the fight-in fights.

Just remember…”this ain’t f’n Survivor where we f’n vote him off, we’ll beat him off”

      • Justin says:

Well… we’ll see then. Maybe Chris is right that they had them go back to the house before their fight.

      • raffy says:

That is a good point Chris maybe the egg incident happened the night before the elimination fight.

  • Jazzkok says:

yeah the shaun white lookalike lookd tough. I won’t say team usa doesn’t look as good as team uk, but they don’t look as hungry as team uk looked. i liked the dude who killed the guy from thailand. he looked good. Watching the first fight between the training partners was interesting and just proved my point (going off topic here) that fitch, swick and kos shouldn’t have trouble fighting eachother.

    • Justin says:

I disagree about the training partners. I think it proved the point that others have made about it being hard for guys to go all out. The guy that won seemed to not have a problem with that, but the guy that lost, IMO, lost at least partly due to an unwillingness to let loose on his friend.

In terms of the guy from Thailand, I think this whole “Going to Thailand to train” thing seems a bit overrated. I haven’t seen very many guys really benefit in MMA from it, they’d be better off going to Albuquerque and training under Greg Jackson, and it would cost less money. That guy definitely got pounded, too.

      • tjack says:

Yes I agree, idk if it was just the guys style or what but he seemed very timid the whole fight.

    • raffy says:

He didnt move his head at all.. He was basically a punching bag.

  • marvelknight4 says:

The Carrot Top lookalike looked the best for Team USA so far. IMO Team USA looks to have decent fighters, Team UK just seems more determined and hungrier to win this. I just hope that it’s not one of those one sided things were one team wins every fight, i hope it’s competitive.

  • marvelknight4 says:

I can’t wait to see Browning get his a$$ kicked. I know he’s a part of Team USA, which of course i’m rooting for, but him and his brother are just jacka$$es who give the sport a bad image.

The training partners who fought eachother were holding back a lot. You can’t be like that when you have an opportunity like this. The guy who lost could have done way better if he hadn’t held back. If you want to be in the UFC and get somewhere, you have to be willing to fight anyone.

In my opinion fighting your teammate isn’t a really big deal like some guys make it out to be.

  • jazzkok says:

i agree with marvel. Given an opportunity like this you can’t hold back, but justin also has a point. It was obvious that the dude who lost wasn’t too thrilled about fighting his buddy. I don’t think ANYONE would EVER feel comfortable fightingtheir friend or training partner. My point is and always has been that, it didn’t matter to dana white, or hendo(who fought his bro rampage), there’s only one contract, and one belt.

  • jazzkok says:

sometimes in life, you have to do things you don’t want to to get where you want to be. “without sacrifise, there can be no victory” forgot what movie that was from but it’s a hell of a quote
