Junior dos Santos to Face Justin McCully at UFC 102
Another heavyweight bout has been added to UFC 102, joining the headlining fight between legends Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. This bout will include the hard hitting Brazilian Junior dos Santos against the veteran Justin McCully.
MMAJunkie has confirmed that both fighters have agreed to the bout, that was first rumored by Tatame. The fight agreements have not yet been finalized, however.
Dos Santos really caught the eye of fight fans when he was seen hitting the pads in Dana White’s video blog leading up to UFC 90, giving the fighter a bit of an underground buzz going into the fight. On fight night dos Santos did not disappoint, dropping his opponent, Fabricio Werdum early in the first round, ending Werdum’s title aspirations, and effectively knocking him out of the UFC. In his last bout dos Santos made quick work of Stefan Struve at UFC 95.
McCully on the other hand has fought for several promotions over his twelve year career before ending up in the UFC. In his promotional debut he secured an unexpected unanimous decision victory over Antoni Hardonk, which he followed up by getting submitted by Gabriel Gonzaga. McCully was last in action in December earning another unanimous decision victory, this time over Eddie Sanchez.

This should be a good test for Dos Santos. Even though he already got passed Werdum (who was inflated and not taking him seriously) this will test is Junior can avoid the ground. I like what I’ve seen from him so far, that guy has some serious power.
I’m really looking forward to this fight bc I like dos santos a lot. But I would like him to maybe fight cain valasquez bc I would like to c how he aproaches a dominate wrestler.

In what way does this matchup make sense? Put a guy who is riding a bullet to the top of the division against a punching bag with appendages? Why not Carwin? This makes all the sense in the world. Carwin hasn’t won’t have fought since 96, Dos Santos since 95… Instead they make this matchup that will assuredly be on Ultimate Knockouts 8. I love Joe Silva and the job he does…but come on… lets let throwing dummies like McCully, Christian Wellisch, and Jake O’Brien go…or fight each other!
O’Brien is a 205er now.
I think that dos Santos versus McCully is a bit of head scratcher, but was Stefan Struve really that tough of an opponent?
Perhaps to get rid of McCully, and “pad” dos Santos’ record for a potential matchup against someone like Kongo (eventually), I hope he destroys McCully um I’m not a fan of his………
I agree this isn’t the greatest match up but carwin is hurt and Jake o’brien looks a lot better at 205…
