Weidman Retains After Silva’s Gruesome Injury

Tonight’s UFC 168 main event was one of the most anticipated rematches in UFC history and while the fight delivered early, it would end in shockingly brutal fashion as former middleweight champion Anderson Silva broke his leg in the second round. The break happened when a Silva leg kick landed on Weidman’s knee and caused the former champ’s leg to snap in grisly fashion. The gruesome injury saw Silva suffer at least one compound fracture of his lower leg and left him screaming in agony in front of a stunned crowd.

The victory was no fluke for Weidman however, as he perfectly timed the check after nearly knocking Silva out in the first round. While Weidman was elated to get the win, he was clearly concerned with the rather macabre scene surrounding the wounded former champion. Weidman improves to 11-0 with the victory and is expected to face Vitor Belfort some time in 2014, but the champ cited a knee injury that could delay the bout for months.

As for Silva, the former champion was immediately rushed to nearby hospital and was expected to undergo emergency surgery on his injured leg. The bout’s conclusion served as a solemn reminder for the dangers every fighter, no matter how great, faces when they step into the cage.
