DREAM 8 Results: Hayato “Mach” Sakurai KOs Shinya Aoki in Headliner
Hayato “Mach” Sakurai needed just 27-seconds to knockout Shinya Aoki on Sunday at the Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan, pinning him in the corner of the ring before unloading a series of knees and punches that forced the referee to intervene before 30-seconds had elapsed in the DREAM 8 main event.
Sakurai improves to 35-8-2 with the victory and now advances to the semifinals of the promotion’s 2009 welterweight grand prix while Aoki, who falls to 20-4 with the loss, is likely to return to the lightweight division for his next bout.
With victories at DREAM 8, Jason High, Marius Zaromskis, and Andre Galvao also advanced to the welterweight semis.
The opening round of DREAM’s featherweight grand prix, which got underway with six bouts at DREAM 7, concluded on Sunday as Daiki “DJ.taiki” Hata advanced with a win over Hideo Tokoro.
Notables Jeff Monson and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro also picked up wins in non-tournament action, while Murilo “Ninja” Rua dropped an exciting unanimous decision to late-replacement Riki Fukuda.

WOW …… big win for sakurai . Wasnt expecting it to finish that fast but it happened . Aoki just got into a bad position in the roll and “boom , boom ,boom” there it goes .Now aoki should defend that lightweight belt ……..
Jeff Monson should be invited back to the UFC.
He’s facing criminal charges in two separate states right now (I believe) that makes it unlikely they will pick him up any time soon.
man I wish comcast carried HDnet.
They don’t carry it at all or it’s an extra fee? Time Warner carries it but it’s a few bucks a month. This event wasn’t live though, I don’t think they’re broadcasting it until this week sometime.
Friday night on Cinci Bell’s Fi-Optics cable.
When I asked comcast back in January I was told that a deal was in place to carry HDNet, but that it would be a while before I could get it here in philly.
Again, if its not your weight class dont force it. There is a weight class for a reason. He should stay in the lightweight div.
IMO- I think Alvarez would beat him up if they met now
You really think Alvarez can beat up Aoki, even though Aoki already submitted him quickly earlier this year?
Also, in regards to your below comment about Monson, he was given a decision he did not earn against Nelson at March Badness. I know it still counts as a W, but it doesn’t count in saying he’s on a roll r that he would do well (necessarily) in the UFC.
Oh and Monson is on a roll! I think he’ll give any UFC HW a run for their money. Too bad for Ninja. I think Shogun’s next to fall.
ok so DREAM.8 was today (early morning) and well I didn’t get to make it all the way to the Aoki v Mach fight but I did see a few bouts (and I have seen the rest today as well)
Minowaman hell I don’t even know where to begin and well it looked like a pro wrassslin match to be honest and he dropped the decision it was odd to say the least.
So when the first MMA match begun Shaolin looked ok, then he started to look rather good in his victory, he is just good and there was nothing shown that I didn’t expect from him…
Ninja, damn kid no one takes you seriously rightnow, you haven’t been looking good for sometime now and a guy taking a fight on one day’s notice and putting an ass whooping on you like that is crazy.. Ya he out weighed you by a few and it was a good fight, lots of ups and downs but hey put the hurt on Ninja forsure, time to refocus kid…
Monson owned Sergei seriously owned him, Monson actually used his jitz for once, it was crazy I didn’t know how to react it had been soo long since I have seen him do anything productive on the ground. Nice choke out forsure… Sergei you looked awful and well you just can’t hang in the top 15 in the HW division no longer, bye… And Monson won’t be in the UFC anytime soon, he will mostlikely have legal issues tying him up for awhile, is he good enough perhaps but lets be real, he has never succeeded in the UFC and well thats just the way it is.. Unfortunate perhaps but it is true…
Mach nice knee to the dome kid, following up with the gnp ending Aoki’s night quick.. Aoki should stay at 155 bottom line, what is it with these 55ers wanting to be a WW and then not putting on any weight or muscle mass? o thats right they are 155ers not 170, and to answer the question, Aoki is still the #2LW in the world imo (this being a WW loss doesn’t change his LW ranking), is he overrated, no he still is awesome, and got a good takedown then ate a knee and got ko’d bottom line… He should defiantely work on a title defense (F~WAMMA) o and Alvarez has nothing on Aoki rightnow, he didn’t last 3 minutes in a “title” fight with Aoki not to long ago, perhaps in the future just not rightnow… Hey we will probably see Aoki at DREAM.9 (assuming) so hopefully it will be at 155…………………..
DREAM is a wonderful show and I enjoy seeing their cards and can’t wait for the next one…
O and it was a hell of thing watching Shiya literally go to sleep, good switch over by High (with the arms) nice
