Matt Brown has agreed to take on fellow welterweight Anthony Johnson on the main card of The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale, which takes place on June 20th in Las Vegas.

MMAFrenzy.com learned of the matchup on Wednesday.

Johnson (7-2), who was to meet John Howard at the event before he backed out of the fight, is coming off of back-to-back victories over Kevin Burns and Luigi Fioravanti, via third-round knockout and first-round TKO respectively, and has won four of his six UFC fights.

Brown (9-7), a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 7, advanced to the quarterfinals of the reality series with wins over Josh Hall and Jeremy May before falling to eventual winner Amir Sadollah. “The Immortal” defeated Matt Arroyo at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale, but suffered a split decision loss to Dong Hyun Kim last September. He’s since rebounded with back-to-back victories over Ryan Thomas and Pete Sell.

Should be a good fight, but I expect Johnson to come out on top.

  • onlytrue1 says:

This should prove to be a good fight. This is a interesting match up. Should be explosive!!! I’ll give it to Johnson U.D..

  • dbiz says:

Hopefully people will shut up about the UFC sheltering their former TUF cast…

    • Chris L. says:

The ufc always shelters their former TUF cast members…I mean seriously it’s not like they’ve fought Wanderlei Silva, Matt Hughes, Chuck Liddell, Demian Maia, BJ Penn, or Lyoto Machida. They never fight anyone good… oh wait…

  • Eric says:

Definitely looking forward to this one…should be spectacular whether it ends early or late. I think a lot of people are gonna go with Johnson, but I kind of want to see Brown take it. We all win on this one though, should be good…

  • timcat says:

This is a good match-up for Johnson. Brown will stand there and throwdown with him. He won’t have to worry about takedowns. This should be fight of the night,

  • jazzkok says:

Yeah this is a great match. I think brown will stick to his aggresive approach and make johnson fight. rumble or brown early 3rd round via tko.

  • marvelknight4 says:

This is a great matchup, the winner of this fight will problably get a top contender next. Brown impressed me in his win vs. Pete Sell, and i’ve always like Rumble. This fight can go either way because both guys can ko eachother, but i’m going with Rumble tko 3rd round

  • dbiz says:

My prediction is Brown or Johnson by (t)ko or sub before the end of the third round…or decision.

  • bigchris2328 says:

dang dbiz great prediction there. im sure one of your results will happen. this should be a war and I doubt it will make it past the 2nd. I remember brown’s ko of pete sell. that was sick, I thought brown was out and then he threw a great right that ko’d sell. rumble is a phenom and I pick him to win. I think he will be a top contender and would love to see him fight alves or fitch. he is not ready for gsp, but I think after gsp-alves, gsp will move up to 185. he has pretty much beat everyone at 170. cant wait to see this fight. this card is looking good, it has this fight, sanchez-guida, and if im not mistaken hendo-bisping. great card

  • Turk says:

I really believe Rumble will win this easy. He needs some better competition.

  • gunslinger says:

this is gonna be a war for shure i could see either one winning but i think rumble will end up on top but anyways someone id getting ko’d

  • jazzkok says:

i’m surprised that everyone is so certain that rumble is going to win. He’s awesome and in a good groove but so is brown. Brown is an aggresive dude and when rumble gets pressed, he backs away and gets thrown off his game as we saw when clementi choked him out. I think it’s going to be close then people think.

I would have liked to see swick vs rumble because of their speed

    • marvelknight4 says:

Yeah I agree, Matt Brown is a tough guy, he’s always in shape, he has a decent overall game and he’s improved his striking. Anthony Johnson also has a decent overall game so i don’t think that Matt Brown is just going to lose easily like most people think. And Jazzkok is right, when Rumble fights someone who is agressive and pushes the pace on him, he tends to back up into defensive mode and gets thrown off his game a bit.

      • onlytrue1 says:

        Great point,

To me it seems Johnson isn’t comfortable fighting in his body yet. He is so athletic and strong but he tends to fight in spurts instead of fighting the whole round so to speak and tends to gas a little.

Matt Brown will press the action on him that for sure.

If Johnson has not improved his stand up and head movement it could prove to be a short night for him.

Johnson reminds me of the boxer Jermain Taylor. Great boxer, young, athletic, ton of potential and could 1 day be the next big thing if he can get with the right camp and put all his skill and ability together.

  • JOHNBOY says:

yeah this is a sick match up, could go either way, can’t wait!!

  • sgtrocknroll says:

With the way these two throw punches, it won’t make a minute of the first before one of em’ gets knock out cold…

  • fr702 says:

This fight is an awesome idea forsure, great test for AJ and lets see if Brown is progressing as we all think he is, definately can be a standup battle with alot of kicks to the dome… I would be suprised if AJ didn’t win this fight, and that is not taking anything away from Brown I just think that AJ is a more complete fighter, hell I wonder if it will get out of the first round… Can’t wait, again good match making by Joe Silva (the best in the business)

  • carls says:

I think brown needs to be sharp and agressive on his feet, if you let rumble set up your in for along night, but stay on him and youl fare much better. I dont see matt getting him down either so ya his stand up has to be on point.

  • 2girls2cups says:

The outcome of this fight will rely heavily on whether or not Yves Lavigne is the ref. If he is, matt brown will have to ko, behead and eat the soul of johnson before the fight gets stopped. I’m surprised the crowd didn’t start screaming “mercy” at the pete sell fight like they did at the end of braveheart.

    • Justin says:

I think Lavigne is a good ref and made a (series of) mistake(s) in the Brown v. Sell fight. I think he won’t make those mistakes again.

      • 2girls2cups says:

i actually agree, for the most part he’s been a good ref but jesus, he must hate pete sell cuz that fight shoulda been stopped a couple of times.

  • Turk says:

It was kinda odd that I was just telling my buddies that Lavigne was gone for a while and he was one of the best refs in the UFC and then this happened. Everyone makes MISTAKES.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

this is just the exception that proves the rule dbiz ;)
