The anticipated Strikeforce welterweight bout between Robbie Lawler and Jake Shields will take place on June 6th in St. Louis, according to Matt Hughes, not May 16th in Tacoma, Washington as previously rumored.
“Just found out a few days ago that Robbie Lawler will fight Jake Shields on the Strikeforce card on June 6th, in St. Louis,” wrote Hughes. “It’s great to have Robbie fight that close to home. We were worried that he would fight in the month of May close to my fight, so it actually turns out to be a pretty good schedule. As always, Robbie’s a performer and puts on fights that people want to see.”

this is a good match, I think shields will win, but it would be nice for robbie to regain his old form when he was a beast.
I agree this will be a good match, It is interesting that the EliteXC WW champ is fighting the EliteXC MW champ for StrikeForce (I know about the purchase and stuff) but when we all were wishing for ProElite to die and Kevin Ferguson to never be on nerwork tv again did any of us imagine that we would see Shields v Lawler? I’m interested to see how Shields’ chin fares against Lawler, because if Shields can’t take Robbie down it will be a painful night for Jake…. Also St.Louis is a nice move I think, probably will pull more than if it were in Tacoma Washington, anyone remember the horrible show that StrikeForce put on there awhile back… Can’t wait for this fight, StrikeForce is going to do well imo
This is interesting. I live in St. Louis and am not really sure why a larger MMA Organization would want to hold an event here as the Missouri MMA rules aren’t quite in line with the Unified rules. Example:
20 CSR 2040-8.140 Fouls
…
F) Palm heel strikes (using the heel of the palm of the hand to deliver a blow to the face)
…
I) Obstruction of breathing through the mouth or nose
…
L) Elbow attacks to the head or the face of the opponent
…
I know all three of these are legal in Nevada, California, etc where the UFC holds shows.
If Lawler can prevent the takedown and defend submissions, he should be able to win. I like both guys and i would like to see both guys in the UFC. Lawler in the 2nd via tko
SUPERFIGHT
Two guys who aren’t really in a lot of people’s top 5s at their weight class make a superfight?
Two of your last three comments have been “SUPERFIGHT”, please find more to add to the conversation.
This is an interesting fight, but I don’t think it’s a Superfight. Lawler and Shields are 2 guys that are good fighters, but let’s not use the term “Superfight” loosely. Something like Anderson Silva vs. Rashad Evans, that would be a Superfight. But this is still a good fight.
I want to see Shields compete in the UFC at 170, I feel he’s good enough to compete with the elite. Lawler, if he worked on a few things, would be a great addition to the UFC’s 185 roster. A few more fights each and these guys should try and move into the UFC, in my opinion.
I really hope Lawyer pulls this one off, mainly for a completely bias reason, I hate Jake Shields…
Okay hate is a little strong, but I really think he is over-rated. I agree with the rest of the world that his ground game is awesome, perhaps the best BJJ in the WW world. But his striking is still so bad, his wrestling is sub-par, and his take down defense is lacking. That all being said, I don’t think Lawyer is going to go in there and try to GnP Jake Shields at all. It’s bang or go home for Lawyer, which will work out to his benefit if he can keep from being taken down by the smaller Shields. If he can avoid the take down he will pick Shields to pieces. If he does go to the ground it will be a long night. I don’t see Shields pulling off a quick submission. Those Militech guys are really slick with their subs and sub defense. But if I had to pick a winner I’d say Shields.. Hope I’m wrong.
Lawyer Milloy?
Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer?
=]
Perry Mason is fighting Matlock?
lol yeah I just read that. I suck. I actually am a pre-law student so that is probably what is on my mind.
Lawler needs to come in shape because i’ve seen him gas out before and if he gasses out in this fight it’s going to be easier for Shields to take him down, of course only if Shields comes in good shape himself.
i would say lawler will take this.
