Former UFC heavyweight champion and recent WAMMA heavyweight title challenger Andrei Arlovski will make his professional boxing debut on April 11th on the undercard of Paul Williams vs. Winky Wright in Las Vegas.

Ring Talk reported the news on Monday and added that this will not be Arlovski’s only foray into the sport, with famed coach and Arlovski trainer Freddie Roach planning on having the “Pitbull” fight “half a dozen fights and then have him challenge somebody of note”.

Arlovski, who will meet an opponent to be announced in the April bout, challenged top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko for the WAMMA belt in January at Affliction: Day of Reckoning. Despite early success, a missed flying knee allowed Emelianenko to connect with an overhand right that sent the challenger crashing to the canvas, immediately halting the matchup.

Well, three good things in this for Arlovski, 1. More heavily padded gloves for his glass jaw. 2. He won’t be able to throw a late flying knee and get himself KOed. 3. He can’t get dropped from boxing for being boring…

    • Jerod says:

haha, i came on here to write the EXACT same things as 1 and 2 above. Good stuff.

I don’t think AA has a glass jaw so much. His loss to Fedor was a perfect combination of AA being stupid and Fedor’s amazing ability to do the right thing all of the time. Really Andre knocked himself out more in that fight than anything.

His loss to Sylvia he wasn’t KO’d so much as being kinda stupid laying there trying to figure out how he went from KO’ing Sylvia in his mind to laying on the floor. When the ref stopped the fight he was completely conscious, just dumbfounded.

I think AA is going to do great in Boxing. And I’ve never thought he was a boring fighter, but thats a matter of opinion. I loved how he had a lackluster 3rd fight with Sylvia, then goes on to KO Marcio Cruz while sitting on his butt! then has a well implemented game plan against Werdum (and at this point all those Pride guys were still expected to just roll through the UFC’s HWs, so playing it safe wasn’t a horrible idea) and how he is labeled boring. He then KO’d Jake O’brien, Ben Rothwell, and Roy Nelson, but those are still boring I suppose.

      • Justin says:

Part of the reason that the UFC wasn’t willing to pay him what he wanted to get paid (essentially cutting him) was because he was fighting to not lose instead of fighting to win (against “quality opponents”, which O’Brien is not)… which usually results in boring. The comment was directed at that portion of his career, not what he’s done since then.

  • fr702 says:

Well good for AA he can get knocked out in boxing now too, seriously tho perhaps he thinks he can’t cut it as a elite MMA fighter rightnow and Roach has talked him into boxing, hell I don’t know he has pretty good boxing but how well will he do just getting hit in the face for 8 rounds or so, should be interesting..

    pretty funny comment Justin

  • GarRule says:

    Have him fight Kimbo!! duh!

    ugh.

  • bottumzup says:

    Arlovski vs. Kimbo!!!!! LOL

  • DaNNyBoY says:

at least in boxing he can’t throw any late knees and get caught, he should transition well into boxing, hes got some nice combos

  • sjava says:

He’s got good hands but I still say his jaw is suspect. That shot by Fedor, while it was good, was by no means spectacular and he crumpled like a rag doll.

  • Mitchell says:

Arlovski does not have a glass jaw. Anyone would have been knocked out by the Fedor punch. Justin says Jake Obrien sucks but his record says he 11-2, 4-2 UFC beaten by Cain Velasquez and Andrei. UFC wasn’t willing to pay Andrei because Affliction was willing to give him $800,000 to challenge Fedor along with a non-exclusive contract which ALLOWS him to box. If he was with the UFC then he would not be allowed to participate in any other sport except UFC. Jake O’brien beat Heath Herring which probably should have catapulted him to a title shot. The UFC has a much improved heavyweight division nowadays but two years ago it was in shambles and Andrei was at or near the Top.

    • Justin says:

Don’t put words in my mouth (so to speak) I didn’t say “Jake Obrien (sic) sucks,” I said he’s not a “quality opponent”, which compared to Werdum (who Arlovski fought to not lose against) he is not.

      • c-ro says:

i agree with mitchell with his comment about the Fedor punch. There are not many out there who would continue to fight after that

  • Spud says:

One so called boring fight against Verdum and he’s boring, wow that’s something I thought I wouldnt hear. Oh these are the same guys that though Heath Herring was good because he was in the UFC. These are the same guys that make reference to the every fight on the UFC 100 card being main event caliber, haha, no. Yes 3 of the fights could be, but that’s it. Arlovski and Fedor would tear apart anyone in the UFC including Brock and Mir.

  • bigchris2328 says:

AA will not be able to hang in boxing. yes his boxing may have looked good against fedor, but he was boxing against a wrestler. then the wrestler ko’d AA. The same way that AA’s boxing looked good against fedor is what his opponents will do to him in boxing. Their speed and crisp combo’s will make AA look slow and prove he shouldnt be boxing. he will be ko’d more than half of his boxing matches.

    • silencekit says:

Freddy Roach is a top boxing trainer. If he didn’t feel that Arlovski was a decent boxer, I doubt he’d train him and corner him in his upcoming boxing matches. I’ll trust Freddy’s opinion of him over yours.

  • Marvelknight4 says:

I think Andre Arlovski is a better fighter now then when we last saw him in the UFC. In his fight with Fedor he lost because he got too confident against one of those fighters that you can never get too confident with, that’s why he got knocked out. I honestly feel that if Arlovski would have been more calm and picked his shots better he would have been able to get the upset win over Fedor. As for his boxing carrer, i personally feel he should stick to MMA because even though his chin is weak, he’s still in my opinion, a top Heavyweight and i feel he would do great if he ever came down to 205.

  • timcat says:

I think he could do real well in boxing.

  • c-ro says:

I’d rather watch Andrei continue to fight in MMA that boxing. hes good as hell watch him in fights such as roy nelson or ben rothwell. hopefully he returns to fight in mma soon.

  • nightmare says:

i think he’ll do pretty good in boxing i don’t think he’ll be champ or anything but i could be wrong. i would rather see in mma boxing to me is a dieing sport while mma is becoming more popular.

  • Vinz C1ortho says:

Only player haters say AA knocked himself out. He in fact got knocked the **** out. Fast.
