The World Series of Fighting has signed one of the preeminent women’s MMA fighters in the world in strawweight fighter Jessica Aguilar (16-4) to a multi-year deal. The women’s pound-for-pound stalwart will be the face of WSOF’s developing women’s MMA division and will make her decagon debut in early 2014.
While MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani first reported the signing, WSOF officials revealed more details about the signing to MMAFrenzy late Monday evening.
Women’s MMA has been one of the big stories of the last two years and the growing promotion is not sitting idly by signing Aguilar. World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “To not only add a women’s division, but to kick it off by signing one of the absolute best women fighters in the game is a statement to what the future holds for World Series of Fighting’s women’s division.”
“Jag” is the first official WMMA fighter signed to the World Series of Fighting’s roster. While Invicta FC atomweight champion Michelle Waterson had a profile on the promotion’s website at one point, the deal was never finalized.
Aguilar has won seven straight fights dating back to a controversial 2010 split decision loss to Zoila Frausto Gurgel for the Bellator strawweight title. Aguilar holds notable victories over Invicta FC strawweight champion Carla Esparza, Lisa Ellis, and two victories over WMMA legend Megumi Fujii.
More details, including opponent and debut date, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
