Bellator 107: Kongo Controls Graham for Tourney Crown

The Bellator MMA Season 9 heavyweight tournament crown was on the line in tonight’s Bellator 107 main event. The bout would see Kongo victorious in a solid bout tonight in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

Kongo Bests Graham for Heavyweight Crown

Cheick Kongo picked up $100K and a heavyweight title shot with a victory over Peter Graham in tonight’s tournament final. While Kongo took a little while to find his range, he seized control about midway through the first and never looked back. Kongo showed a much tighter striking game against the solid kickboxer and also mixed in some wrestling to bloody up his occasional training partner.

Kongo will now await the results of next week’s Bellator 108 co-main event between champion Alexander Volkov and Summer Series champion Vitaly Minakov. The heavyweight title fight will take place during Bellator’s Season 10 run starting in early 2014.


Rd. 1- Legkick by Graham to start the fight. Kongo is constantly circling early and Graham throws a kick that’s caught and answered by a Kongo counter. Jabs by Kongo. Nice exchange by both men and Kongo seizes the chance for a tie up but he doesn’t get it. Jabs by Kongo and he uses them to set up a nice uppercut. Both men exchange legkicks. Kongo with the Thai clinch but Graham punches to the body to seperate. Nice body kick by Kongo. Good inside legkick is called a low blow but it was legal for Graham. Kongo is using hard body kicks now and he lands a tough right hand. Graham clinches now and the fighters exchange knees. Nice knee by Kongo as he grapples out. Graham misses a spinning backfist shortly before the end of the round. Kongo really found his range late in that one. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Kongo.

Rd. 2- Nice jabs by Kongo. Good right by Kongo as well. Graham returns fire with a nice legkick. Graham is bleeding around his left eye now. Clinch by Graham and Kongo lands a good knee before Graham lands an elbow on the exit. Kongo with some solid strikes and he clinches before Graham throws him off. Graham lands two solid right hands before Kongo clinches. Nice combination by Kongo. Thai knees to the body by Kongo now but Graham breaks away with a good elbow. Kongo clinches and Graham throws him to his knees but Kongo recovers and tries the same. Graham is exhausted with a minute left. Hard knees in the clinch by Kongo now. Double leg by Kongo and he lands some strikes before the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Kongo (20-18).

Rd. 3- Kongo is picking at Graham early in the round and Graham is offering little resistance as he cannot get inside the range of Kongo. Graham finally lands a solid counter right. Nice combination by Graham but he gets taken down and Kongo gets to mount. Big elbows and punches from Kongo and Graham gives up his back as his cut explodes from an elbow. Graham manages to reverse position and he lands some big elbows and a solid knee as Kongo stands with 90-seconds left. Kongo reasserts in the clinch and both are now covered in Graham’s blood. Reap takedown by Kongo and he is landing measured elbows to the head and body with about 0:45 left. More strikes by Kongo as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Kongo (30-27).
