UFC interim heavyweight champion Frank Mir made an appearance at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio on Friday and showed no effects from the knee surgery he underwent earlier this week, leading many to believe that the surgery was a minor procedure and that he may still be able to fight Lesnar in May.

However, MMAFrenzy.com has learned that Mir is likely to need 4-6 weeks to fully recover from the surgery before he can resume regular training, likely knocking him out of his scheduled May unification bout against Brock Lesnar.

Additionally, Cage Potato is reporting that Mir’s camp asked the UFC not to announced the UFC 98 bout against Lesnar, which was announced just one day after, and adds that if Mir is indeed unable to fight Lesnar in May the promotion is rumored to be considering having Rashad Evans defend the light heavyweight title against Lyoto Machida or Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in the UFC 98 main event.

hopefully rashad will be able to headline 98 against machida/rampage. 98 is a quick turnaround from 96 and I doubt rampage will be cleared to fight again so soon. I also doubt rampage will turn down an opportunity to get “his title” back, but he should take a few weeks off after 96 to rest and heal. most top contenders dont fight for another 3-5 months after 1 fight. If rampage jumps at the opportunity to fight rashad and loses he likely wont be in the title hunt for a year or year and a half. 205 is loaded with guys that are 1 fight away from a title shot. (machida, forrest, shogun, jardine, liddell not to mention the 2nd tier guys: thiago silva, houston alexander, etc.) If and hopefully rampage turns down this shot at 98 he can likely get a title shot at say ufc 103-104 before christmas against machida or evans.

I really want to see machida/evans, I would like to see how machida handles evans’s ktfo power and wrestling and how evans handles machida’s elusiveness and subs.

I also feel bad that noone is giving jardine a chance to win. this is eerily familar to when jardine beat liddell and forrest. in those fights liddell and forrest were pretty much going to beast jardine based on everyone’s opinion, however it didnt happen.

I hope jardine wins against rampage tonight.

Did you just say Shogun was one win away from a title shot? You mean Rua? Seriously? They guy’s at least 3 away from a title shot, and those had better be against top guys. He’s a chump without the Pride rules.

I’ll put T. Silva over Rua, even given the KO he just suffered. You know why? Because he got beat by a top contender while Rua just barely outlasted a mid-40s Mark “The Fossil” Coleman. And he did NOT look good doing it.

Liddell 1 away from a title shot? He’s 3-1 in his last 4. He’s not even close, unless money speaks more than record.

Machida should be 0 wins from a title shot. Forrest MAY be one win, and Jardine is one win past Jackson from a shot.

      IMO.

so does this mean lesnar-mir would possibly take place on ufc 100 instead?

  • tylaj says:

well i would like to see kongo vs lesnar!
kongo should get a title fight!

  • jiujitsuMAN says:

houston cant fight from his back alexander is so far from a title shot its funny… liddel, jardine and forest all need to pop out a couple wins… shogun, well hes around hte same levle as houston…

machida deserves the next shot. then i say T.Silva Vs Rampage(if rampage wins tonight) winner of that would get the next shot…

to clear something up about my earlier post, I meant that out of the top 5 guys at 205, rampage would have to wait at least 6 months for a title shot if he were to lose to evans. after rampage gets a shot, machida would be next(at least 3 months for a shot) then depending on how forrest does in his next fight or how the hua-liddell fight goes they could be next. we all know how dana favors chuck and would like for chuck to retire as champ. then rampage could get a shot after forrest or after hua-liddell. I am not saying that hua-liddell are ready for a shot, but more than likely one of those guys will get a shot. top 4 at 205 to me are as follows…1.evans(champ), 2.machida(future champ hopefully), 3.rampage(greatly improved with this new camp), 4 forrest(well-rounded fighter).
