WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown sent challenger Leonard Garcia to the canvas with an overhand right in the opening minute of their WEC 39 headliner then went to work to finish his opponent, working ground and pound and attempting a rear naked choke before ultimately forcing Garcia to tap to an arm triangle at 1:57 of the first.

Brown improved to 21-4 with his first title defense, while Garcia falls to 12-3 with the unsuccessful challenge.

The event took place on Sunday, March 1st, at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas and aired live on Versus.

Former champion Urijah Faber is likely to rematch Brown for the belt this summer. Brown captured the title with a first-round TKO of Faber last November. Meanwhile, Garcia could square off with top-contender and WEC 39 victor Jose Aldo to get back into the 145-pound title picture.

Ricardo Lamas, Aldo, and Rob McCullough also earned victories on the evening’s main card.

The event’s complete results were:

  • Mike Brown (c) def. Leonard Garcia via submission (arm triangle) — Round 1, 1:57
    WEC Featherweight Championship
  • Ricardo Lamas def. Bart Palaszewski via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

    i hope mike brown wins!

  • fr702 says:

Karalexis is just about the most up and down fighter ever, never making it into stardom yet always hanging around, just my opionion.

I would like to win tonight..

    Damacio Page
    Marcus Hicks
    Bart Palaszewski
    Jose Aldo
    Mike Brown

but I wouldnt be suprised if Garcia won, it is going to be a hell of a fight imo, in the long run I believe that Brown will win by UD

  • B W says:

Wow, Mike brown is impressive again. That was sick.

  • gunslinger says:

garcia got drooped by a huge right to the temple and then choked easily…I want aldo vs faber before faber gets another shot a second win over pulver does not earn you a title shot…i cant see brown losing now i just dont know why…brown beats faber a second time no matter what imo

    • B W says:

I agree that brown beats faber again. He looked a lot stronger then faber, seemed to put faber anywhere he wanted. He has better hands than faber, and faber will get impatient and make mistakes again.

  • muaythai4life says:

Brown did look really good tonight! i was surprised a little, I thought Garcia’s wild style might pose a problem for Brown who usually is a little short starter. But that right hook landed right on the temple and Garcia was doomed after that!

    Great fight!!

  • Turk says:

Great win for Brown. It is foolish to say that Brown would own Faber no matter what. The shot he hit [Faber] with in their last fight was ‘yes’ because he was sorta too aggressive, on the other hand if Faber’s shot would have landed instead it would pry have been the same result. Can’t wait for a rematch should be great. Aldo is a pimp he needs some better competition that kid he fought looked slightly handicapped (not tring to be funny) the way he kept jerking forward like that. Anyway pretty good night of fights. Oh yeah, the McCullough/Hicks fight disappointed. Page and lamas were impressive.

  • Justin says:

    Page was impressive.

Lamas did a good job pulling out the upset, but a better submission fighter would probably beat him.

McCullough vs. Hicks was disappointing to say the list. Neither fighter was fighting to win, but rather fighting to not lose. It was rather ridiculous. I’m really glad that Cerrone will be getting another shot at Varner before McCullough gets another title shot after that performance.

Aldo looked impressive, but that guy he was fighting was a terrible striker. The guy definitely has a lot of potential though.

Brown… wow, just wow. He planted Garcia with that overhand right, and it was just a matter of time after that. Props to Garcia for hanging in as long as he did, but he just got completely overwhelmed after getting blasted.

    • willyd says:

I called Razor Rob was going to fight that way, he did the same thing against Kenneth Alexander after losing to Varner.

Brown is for real. I had picked Garcia to win thinking Brown would be a one and out. That was a sick arm triangle choke, perfectly executed.

mike brown to tko faber if gets rematch

  • RJA says:

I can’t believe garcia didn’t go to sleep after that temple shot.It is garcia though and he will take a beating with a smile before giving up,like in the huerta fight. So props to brown for finishing and props to garcia for trying to hang in there. And my prediction in the brown vs faber 2 is faber by some weird unknown move.

  • b free says:

    Some great fights last night

First of all i picked mike brown to win but when i saw him walking in he looked like he was about to cry soi changed my mind and then before you knew it he laid out garcia and was smashing him wide open. It will be a sick rematch between faber and brown though, Brown’s power against Faber’s quickness, cant wait.

Aldo looked great last night but who wouldn’t when fighting a guy whos chin was higher than eddie bravo

Razor rob and Hicks was a complete disaster, the ref should have followed through and given them the no contest. i couldnt stop yelling at my tv “for gods sake do something!”

  • DaNNyBoY says:

I was there live, and that Main event was short but sweet, no one in that arena saw that coming, i will posting a link of pics we took with Faber, Curran, and Pulver later
