After having to drop out of a UFC 166 bout with Tim Boetsch due to a knee injury, Luke Rockhold is hoping to return before the year is out and fight another top ten ranked middleweight. The talented fighter hasn’t fought now since May, when he was blasted by Vitor Belfort at UFC on FX 8.
According to the latest edition of “UFC Tonight”, Rockhold hopes to begin training soon and is interested in fighting Francis Carmont at UFC 168 on December 28th. When word of Rockhold’s wish reached Carmont, the Tristar fighter tweeted:
Luke Rockhold wants to fight me, he is the champion of Strikeforce, I’m ready, let’s go.
The American Kickboxing Academy vet then proceeded to respond by tweeting:
@FrancisCarmont lets make a deal. If I beat you, GSP can never wear that little camo hat again?
Wow. How about that for an unexpected shot across St. Pierre’s bow? Bets regarding fashion accessories aside, it’s a bout that makes sense in terms of rankings. Carmont has won six straight fights now in the UFC, and is coming off a UD win over Costa Philippou to lock up the promotion’s #7 ranking.
Rockhold, who won all 9 of his Strikeforce fights before joining the UFC, is currently ranked #6. Even if the proposed bout can’t get booked for UFC 168, then maybe sometime in early 2014?
