If you recall, not long before Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman threw down at UFC 162, a report surfaced that “The Spider” had a rib injury and the bout might be in jeopardy. Silva’s camp denied the report, however, and the bout went on as scheduled.
Well, now that the two are scheduled for a rematch at UFC 168, and Weidman is the new champ, Silva has revealed that he was injured after all (cue dramatic music). Although the former champ says the injury wasn’t exactly crippling or anything, he did relay to media in Rio de Janeiro recently that it affected his performance (comments via MMA Fighting.com).
“It was good that you mentioned this because I was really hurt,” Silva said. “Nobody mentioned this yet, but that’s not an excuse for my performance. It was a below where I was injured for my first fight with Chael Sonnen. That’s it. I was at 85 percent of my physical condition.”
“I can’t talk about this because anything I say can be used against me,” Silva said when asked to elaborate on the injury, which was originally reported as a possible fractured rib. “It’s in the past. I’m okay now.”
Silva also went on to say that he knows Weidman will be looking to take him down on December 28th, and that a “different Anderson” is coming. Interested? It’s going to be a fantastic way to close out 2013.
