Though Couture experienced a good deal of success at heavyweight, his time at 205 pounds was equally memorable. “The Natural” immediately cemented himself as a person of interest in the division by dropping down a decade ago to beat Chuck Liddell. Couture followed it up with convincing wins over Tito Ortiz and Vitor Belfort (with a cut-based loss sandwiched in-between the victories), and would eventually go on to rack up a 3-1 mark at light heavyweight in his last four fights. Throw in the fact his success came at the time most competitors are looking to retire and Couture’s run in the Octagon is even more impressive.
The world had an opportunity to watch two talented 205ers go toe-to-toe last weekend when UFC champion Jon Jones put his belt up against Alexander Gustafsson in a highly exciting effort at UFC 165. Jones’ decision win in the duel solidified his status as the most successful title-holder the division has ever seen with six straight defenses of the belt. However, the question remains as to where the performance put him on the list of the organization’s all-time greats at light heavyweight. (Photos by USA Today Sports Images)
