Although Dana White hasn’t confirmed the promotion will book Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson II, the UFC boss man has relayed he’d “like to do the rematch” and why not? Their UFC 165 bout was not only one of the promotion’s best fights in recent memory, and a “FOTY” front runner, but it was extremely competitive. Those are typically two of the key ingredients a rematch needs to get signed.
While it remains to be see if Jones-Gustafsson II will materialize in early 2014, so far, it appears like the health of both men shouldn’t be a roadblock to it. After MMA Junkie.com reported that both Jones and Gustafsson were cleared of serious injuries at a Toronto hospital, MMA Fighting.com has also been informed by Gustafsson’s camp that he’s relatively okay as well.
Alliance MMA coach Eric Del Fierro updated “The Mauler’s” condition by texting:
“No major injuries,” he wrote via text. “Just sore and staples on top of his head.”
So, now we’ll have to wait and see if Jones wants to throw down with Gustafsson next, or if he wants to fight another top contender in Glover Teixeira (since Jones has made it clear he won’t give Daniel Cormier an immediate title shot when he moves to 205). Gustafsson has already said he’s down for another go.
Hopefully we’ll find out sooner than later what direction the promotion is leaning.
