The UFC awarded four fighters bonuses tonight as UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Alexander Gustafsson, Renan Barão, and Mitch Gagnon all earned $50,000 for their efforts in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The bonuses were announced at the UFC 165 Post-Fight Press Conference.
Jones and Gustafsson Earn “FOTN”
In the least surprising award of the night, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson earned “Fight of the Night” for their “Fight of the Year” candidate tonight in Toronto. The two battled in an epic five round fight that literally could have gone to either fighter in the end to set up an even bigger rematch further down the road. The bonus was Jones’ sixth in the Octagon and, shockingly, Gustafsson’s first.
Barão Crushes Wineland for “KOTN”
UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barão’s incredible 21-fight win streak and stunning knockout may have been upstaged by tonight’s main event, but it did not go unnoticed as the Brazilian earned “Knockout of the Night.” Barão caught Eddie Wineland with a nasty spinning back kick that floored the former WEC champion and led the Brazilian finishing yet another fight in the Octagon. Barão has earned bonuses in three of his six UFC fights.
Gagnon’s Guillotine Nets “SOTN”
Mitch Gagnon picked up $50K tonight for his guillotine finish of Dustin Kimura in the FOX Sports 1 opener. Gagnon and Kimura engaged in an exciting battle before Gagnon took advantage of a bad shot from Kimura and put him to sleep with an arm-in guillotine. The bonus was Gagnon’s second in his three UFC appearances.
