It’s a big day for Bellator, as the promotion will hold it’s 100th event tonight at the Grand Canyon University Arena, and the card will fittingly feature a pretty intriguing main event. As you likely know, former welterweight tourney winner Douglas Lima will battle UFC vet Ben Saunders for a second time. Intially, prior to Lima getting injured twice, the bout would have determined who was going to face champion Ben Askren next. Now, since Askren’s a free agent and his Bellator future is uncertain, no one’s entirely sure what’s in store for tonight’s winner.
Saunders recently spoke to MMA Fighting about tonight’s long awaited scrap (Lima stopped Saunders at Bellator 57 in 2011), and here’s what “Killa B” had to say about the promotion’s title situation.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen with him, but as of right now, I feel that [Lima and I are] the two top welterweights on Bellator’s roster. This is for the tournament championship, but at the same time, I don’t think anyone can deny that me and him are probably No. 1 and No. 2 ranking-wise for Bellator. So I’d believe that this would be considered an unofficial title fight in it’s own right.”
There’s no denying that Saunders and Lima have scored plenty of impressive wins during their Bellator runs. The noted finisher also relayed that despite the uncertainty surrounding Askren, he still hopes to test his skills against the renowned wrestler. On that note, the 30 year-old offered this analysis of Askren’s game, which has produced a 12-0 record to date.
“I would give Askren maybe a third-degree black belt in wrestling. I would say he’s probably a purple belt in jiu-jitsu. And striking, man, anybody can choose their rankings on that one, but I’d say maybe low-level blue belt. So if you look at it, on paper, it would be a very, very entertaining match-up. I have no problem fighting of my back. I really receive no damage there. You can lose rounds, for sure, but I’m tricky.”
It’s definitely an interesting match-up to consider, but as things look now, it doesn’t appear like Askren-Saunders will happen any time soon.
