The Ulimate Fighter 18: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate kicked off tonight on FOX Sports 1 following UFC Fight Night 28. This season will feature 16 men’s and 16 women’s bantamweights living together in The Ultimate Fighter house for the first time in the show’s history. The show will see the winning preliminary fighters split into two teams coached this season by UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. Tune in each week as the fighters vie for a six-figure UFC contract. [Spoilers Below]
The show picks up on the heels of last week’s fight, with Tate talking about the difficulty in coaching against someone she respects in Shayna Baszler. Meanwhile in the Rousey locker room, Baszler struggles with the frustration of losing but appreciates the support of Rousey, who took the loss hard as well. Rousey reminds her team in their next training session that they have to control their emotions in the cage.
When the session begins, the focus is on Team Rousey’s Chris Beal who admits that while his hand injury is tough, it is nothing compared to his battle with fibrosarcoma cancer in 2009. Beal talks about his cancer battle and his tough upbringing (including his brother being shot to death) before his training session. Rousey really likes what she has seen from the fighter, insisting that despite his injured hand that he can prevail in his upcoming fight.
A bit of drama in the Team Tate camp as Juliana Pena is accused of giving away the women’s match ups to Team Rousey by her teammate Cody Bollinger. In the ensuing drama, Pena tries to put the blame off on veteran Roxanne Modafferi. Pena would later apologize to Modafferi after spending time with teammate Chris Holdsworth.
After the break, more drama breaks out between Tate and Rousey when the teams are watching the fights in a night out. Shouting match breaks out with Tate and her boyfriend/coach Bryan Caraway against Rousey and her coach Edmond Tarverdyan. The crux of the issue seems to be hits on Rousey’s striking and twitter comments, directed at Rousey, by Caraway.
After that mess, both fighters make weight and the fight is set.
Chris Holdsworth (Team Tate) vs. Chris Beal (Team Rousey)
- Beal pressures forward to start the fight and takes a hit to the cup. We’re back after a short break. CH throws a jab but eats a combo in the process. CH is using his jab well but not resetting quick enough to stop counters. Beal connects again and lands a nice hook. CH drops to a double and gets tossed to his back after a scramble. CH uses an armbar attack to make Beal back off but eats some shots as he stands. CH connects with a nice hook but Beal eats it. CH gets stuffed on two takedowns. CH connects on a huge strike and follows up with a nice guillotine on the ground. Beal taps and it is over.
