Heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez, veteran Josh Neer, and knockout artist Anthony Johnson also picked up main card victories.

pretty much the outcomes I expected. Rumble and J-lo {hate the name ] looked awesome Cain was impressive too.
Overall I felt like this was a good card.
In the Matt v. Matt fight, I kinda feel like if the ref didn’t stop it when Veach was getting pounded, he shouldn’t have stopped it there at the end when Grice was getting pounded. That said, Grice looked more out on the way down than Veach had.
Velasquez needs to step up his competition, I think Kongo would embarrass Velasquez right about now. Stojnic did well for coming in on such short notice, and having to travel from Holland, but he was way outclassed. Stojnic will likely get another fight as a reward for taking this one on short notice, and taking Velasquez past the first round. Hopefully if he does, he will be able to prepare a little bit more for the fight.
Josh Neer has no class, he’s almost as bad as Diaz. Danzig is not very good at all, he’s a gate keeper now, or he may conveniently disappear like Kendall Grove.
AJ is a bad man, and training with the people he’s training with he’s only going to get better. He seemed to struggle a bit at finding his range tonight, and wasn’t getting his shots off like I’ve seen him do in the past.
Dan Miller is a great acquisition by the UFC. He has stepped in on short notice multiple times now, and won all of them. He’s 11-1-1 and I expect that his next fight will be him scheduled rather than stepping in for an injured fighter. Rosholt on the other hand showed why he was in WEC to start out with. He may get another fight or two in the UFC, but its hard to judge when he got caught like he did.
J-Lau is a really exciting fighter, I’m glad he got the win. I still would like to see him face off against Franca at some point, but he’ll fight a couple more times before Franca comes back, so it may not be good timing when that rolls around. Stephens looked game, but was way outclassed on the ground, and just wasn’t able to keep it standing. He definitely still has a future in the division, and I look forward to seeing him fight again.
Yeah completely agree with all of what you said. I think Dan Miller should fight another top guy. His only real test has been Matt Horwich im not saying miller is not a good fighter he is far from that and will one day be middlewieght champion in my mind. I think he sgould fight the winner of the Marquardt Gouviea fight. Those are really talented fighters and we would definately see where Miller is in this division. I think Lauzon should fight Spencer Fisher or Roger Huerta. Neer should fight Diego if he wins or the winner of the Maynard Miller fight or even Lauzon. Valesquez really needs a step up in competition like you said and should fight the Grove if he wins or the winner of the Gonzaga Carwin fight. Matt veach should fight Kyle Bradley or someone who isnt all that high up there because he didnt look too impressive in his win over Grice. AJ NEEDS to fight someone from AKA. I think Fitch could beat him, and Swick, Koscheck and Saunders would make for a really good fight.
Sorry for the long comment
I streamed what i could last night and I think the card (what i saw of it) was pretty good… AJ is a bad man, anyways gotta run adios form Costa Rica…
FR,
Glad you got to see at least some of it.
UFC fantasy site calls Lauzon’s win via choke. Cost me points. Lame.
that should be corrected, was clearly an armbar.
It should be corrected, but it still shows choke right now. That’s not the first time they’ve done that though. dbiz, you should complain to them about it.
That actually gave me points HAHA… I do horrible on them anyway even though i cant win because i am only 15 but would still like to get at least in the top 20 one day my highest is only a 185.
Joe Rogan’s rant on body design is classic haha. Good card of fights, really enjoyed the card.
I must have fast forwarded through that, or if it was during a fight, I was blocking him out.
it was in the Johnson-Fiorivanti beating, right after fiorivanti lands an accidental knee to Johnson’s crotch. It was very sarcastic and normal for Roganism’s but I have to admit quite funny.
Oh that, I remember now. I won’t get into why he’s wrong, but…anyways. What needs to happen is for someone to create an effective cup.
to be honest it doesn’t matter, every cup I ever tried(including the boxing groin guards) don’t make a difference.
I have to say I’m excited to see Sonnen V. Maia. Even though that card has no “super” fights it looks very solid. And even nicer that it is free.
Yeah, definitely looking forward to that event. I understand the people complaining about not having the “big stars” on the card, but you’ve got Diego v. Joe, Maia v. Sonnen, Gouveia v. Marquardt, all three should be good fights. Then you’ve got Kos and Dos Santos on the card. Whether you like Kos or not, he can be a very exciting fighter, plus this Paulo Thiago guy isn’t supposed to be half bad. With Dos Santos, what can you say, he singlehandedly (literally) knocked Fabricio Werdum not only out of title contention, but out of the UFC. Whether he was a flash in the pan or not, we’ll find out in two weeks, but the potential for another highlight reel KO sure seems high.
I have to be honest, Kos is getting to be a more and more complete fighter each fight so I enjoy seeing what he does. Dos Santos…what can you say about his KO power that hasn’t already been said? Diego v. Joe= high octane fight, Maia vs. Sonnen = what Fihlo-Sonnen 2 should have been, Goueveia vs Marquardt? again entertaining match up.
Back to tonight’s fights… Velasquez-herring or velasquez-Kongo anyone? Think both would be intriguing. I’d also be really interested to see Franca-Lauzon, Lauzon just keeps getting better and if he develops his striking he could turn into a formidable opponent for anyone. Johnson…wow kid is a freak, I saw him wrestle in HS and he is a pure athlete capable of anything. Danzig really needs to learn how to take on fighters who aren’t pure technicians, he does well with that but I’ve noticed on guys who just throw from anywhere he really struggles. That triangle was avoidable he didn’t have much respect for Neer’s ground game it seemed. Very interesting card as far as a look into the future.
My only issues…why was Veach given so much time to recover and Grice given so little? I know justin you said it too but I mean christ Veach ate leather like Kimbo and was allowed to continue. Also as one sided as it was Velasquez’s fight wasn’t over, the guy wasn’t doing much but it was what most guys do there. Guess he should’ve made more of an effort to improve position. Don’t really understand either at all.
The only difference I can see in Veach’s time on his back and Grice’s is the way they looked on the way down, and the way they were defending. Grice looked more out on the way down, and less active in his defense once he was down.
I’m not sure if Stojnic even understands English to understand what the ref was saying, and he was making his UFC debut on short notice (I think he got the call this past week). So maybe he has some excuse for not trying harder to defend himself in that situation. However, he really wasn’t “intelligently defending himself” and showed no signs of doing anything different than what he was already doing. It had to be called, there’s no reason to let him just get pounded. Besides, he had taken a lot of hard shots already, the ref has a responsibility to protect him from taking more pointless shots.
believe me I understand more than most about the duty to protect the fighter(been rocked before and I also defend the refs more than anyone if you look at my history) and I do agree that was not a good job of intelligently defending himself but, the guy was pretty damn coherent so either he didn’t understand the official’s commands or he was just giving up.
Grice and Veach though…I though it should’ve stopped when Veach went down at first b/c of the way his arms were locked out and just blindly reaching out. However, that is on Grice he should’ve have slowed it down and focused on making his shots count rather than rushing and missing half of them. I DO think Grice was a good stoppage under normal circumstances I just didn’t agree with it in the context of allowing veach so much time.
I know this is off topic a little bit but i just realized you can sign up and i did so now if you guys want you can add me on you friends or whatever if you guys want to.
huge mma fan but iam from New Zealand, we get all mma ppvs but no fight nights really sux. does any one know where i can watch it on the net, besides the ufc website
There are a lot of options. Google “fighter name v. Fighter name video” and generally speaking you will find the fight you are looking for somewhere.
just watched the tibau v clementi prelim on ufc.com….clementi got totally worked. he sure talks a lot of **** for someone who doesn’t have wins over any really strong fighters.
I liked when he Dis’ed Tibau after that exchange.
Good fights last night.
Thought Velasquez looked good. He needs to start facing better compition. I think his next opponent should be Hardonk. Would be a good test.
I don’t really like Lauzon, or his brother for that matter, but looked good against Stephens.
Thought that the Grice fight should have been stopped earlier. He had him on queer street.
Rosholt needs more seasoning at local shows before coming up to the big time.
AJ is a freaking beast. Great training is the key. He will be a handfull for anyboby.
Danzig is not as good as first thought. Poor showing. I really have no coment on Neer, as we are not allowed to bash fighters here. PUNK!
As for UFC95, well Chael Sonnen is in for a very bad day. Maia is not an out of shape head case, hello Paulo, he is a BJJ machine.
darn i was hoping for mac and rich to bounce back with great wins oh well at least batman and chipper won =]
matt riddle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…………………..
anyways…..mac danzig needs to rethink his carrear maybe if he ate some real protein..aka (MEAT!!!!)…..then he would win…i say put diaz and danzig versus each other…….diaz should win pretty clearly……….can the miller brothers lose!……well yes they can dan miller will keep winning!….but i cant say the same for his brother…for his brother will fall to the lw wrecking machine that is grey maynard soon enough….and then gray will fight another top guy after that and earn his title shot soon enough…..maynard wil be lw champ by end of 09 or early 10
-Very impressed with Lauzon’ ground game.He mixed it up alot. And how about that firemans carry, lol, you don’t see that every day.
-Johnson should have got ‘knockout of the night’ not Valasquez.Stojnic wasn’t defending himself but he wasn’t close to being knocked out either.
-Tibau looked impressive also.Have to keep an eye on his progression.Definitely a threat in the LW division.
Spoiler Alert: Diego Sanchez via TKO round 1
Velasquez looked great technically but i was perplexed as to why he could not finish this guy. He has shown power in the past, enough to take out whoever he has faced. Maybe a step up in competition will tell more, i could not believe the shots Stojnic took and still was there.
Danzig reminds me of Ed Herman so much, in this last fight though Josh Neer showed that speed kills, as so often seen the faster fighter usually wins in the end.
Mac has power and decent ground skills but lacks that fast ruthless ability to finish some of these top guys. Neer seemed to get into Macs head with his “Diaz” like antics. Danzig also has a very straight ahead attack and is highly predictable.
On a positive note this could be the loss that helps Mac change it up a bit and strive to be a better fighter, it happens to the best of them.
i hate mac danzig.
